Our dad spent the last 4 years of his life here. While not so much a reflection on the Hearth, it is an institution. We felt we had no choice as he suffered from some dementia and was not able to fully care for himself at home. He was a WWII vet. When he arrived in the U.S. after the war, he took the "train they call the City of New Orleans" to Carbondale, IL, then another train to his home. His twin brother was killed in the war and his mother half expected to lose our dad as well. Nevertheless, he lived on and flourished in his life, only to end up in an institution, never to return home, draining most of his life's fortune, eating "Cisco" food (he got two choices of cuisine), locked in, and having to hang with people he often said were "crazier" than he. I was not fond of the food. Although our dad, having lost some sense of smell and taste, thought it was fine, and the staff was kind enough to offer me a lunch when I visited. I could offer a few suggestions. Not only is this a locked-in facility, it is a locked-out one as well. A few times I stood for a length of time after ringing the bell waiting for someone to break away from their busy schedule to unlock the door. My dad called the place a "prison." He as aware enough to know he was locked in. Sad as it was, I considered his sentiments a result of his dementia. Perhaps there could be a faster way to let family in? I didn't see many volunteers. A volunteer can offer one-to-one attention, is not bound by a performance-driven schedule, or worried about pay, benefits or hours. There was a religious service I think. If you guys haven't reached out to the community, you might consider doing so. (I have some experience in this). I also thought it would have been nice to see a care dog. Maybe, unlike hospitals, regulations forbid such a thing? While our dad was not so fond of dogs, he may have warmed up to something like a cockadoodle. Overall, as others have said, the place was clean and did not smell, it has a nice center courtyard and I thought the cognitive-helping activities were nice. And the high point of course, was that it is safe.

Wonderful place to work and proud to be a part of the team that works hard to serve seniors. Leadership works hard to provide a great place to call home for the residents and a great place to work for staff. It is really a family like environment and I am happy that my role allows me to meet with residents and families to discuss what life is like when they choose to live at The Hearth.

I volunteered here a few times over the past year - my day job is an aerospace engineer over in Hartford which coincidentally the majority of residents there could relate to. A lot of the new friends I made there were actually from the aerospace industry or knows someone close to them that is. Which was awesome because they were able to enlighten me with pro tips and really drop that old school knowledge on a dude, lol. The place was very clean and judging from how many hand sanitizer dispensers and automatic time release air fresheners they have that were strategicallyconveniently located, safe to say they are big on keeping the ambience comfortable for all who stay and visit The Hearth. As for the staff , they were very warm and welcoming and made me feel at home. From what I saw, this small but power-house of a staff always went to infinity and beyond when it comes to making sure that every single person living there is cared for uniquely, while just as important, keeping them engaged by providing a boat load of activities and clubs for them to participate in and to enjoy their hard earn retirement in leisure. They have game nights, puzzle clubs, arts and craft and often go do fun things such as seeing a movie, or going to a casino or even a museum! They do outings where they get to go wine tasting or shop at the mall - the opportunities are endless. Over all experience at the place is a A+.

We are loving it here. My mom is in Keepsake Village and the care has been stellar. A few bumps at the beginning but there is an adjustment period for everyone. Update 101218 Been here a few more months now and things have only gotten better. Mom has made several new friends and is participating in a lot more activities. Communication between myself and the staff is fantastic and they are always striving to improve where very little improvement is necessary. Bravo! 5 stars
