When the time comes that the aged family member in the autumn of their life, cannot live alone and take care of themselves, it’s time to take the heart wrenching task of placing them in a home. Look no further. We did all the research and leg work. We had high standards and made many different home visits. We found Shady Oaks to meet all of our expectations and then some. Shady Oaks is clean, inviting, comfortable, well-staffed with RN’S and Aides, and very homey. Your loved one can readily adapt to their new surroundings. It’s a place that can make them feel “at home” with a lot of company. Perhaps it’s because most homes are owned by large corporations. Shady Oaks is owned by one individual….a caring, warm, understanding and compassionate individual….namely Tyson Belanger who has the welfare of residents his prime concern. All residents at Shady Oaks are treated as his “family” …a family he takes as a serious responsibility to protect and nurture. The staff he hires definitely mirror his feelings and actions. Tyson went to extremes during Covid-19, exhausting every imaginable measure to ensure the safety of his “family” and staff. Kudos to Tyson. Need we say more!!! Laurie M

My mom has been at Shady Oaks since October 2021. The staff are kind, caring and supportive during this stage of her life. Tyson and staff work hard every day to protect the residents from coming in contact with COVID-19. Planned activities are increasing now which help everyone's morale. I trust Shady Oaks to provide the necessities for healthy and happy residents.

We are thankful to have found Shady Oaks Assisted Living when dad needed twenty four hour care. Dad’s smooth transition was made possible by the professional and caring staff. I love the family atmosphere with lots of hellos, giving the residents a feeling of home. Dad enjoys his new friendships and joins all the activities. Anything musical is a favorite!

We are so blessed to have found an exceptional place for Mom to be! Every staff member is kind, patient and compassionate, not only with her, but with us! The nursing care is such high quality, they notice the slightest details and promptly get any medical attention she needs and keeps us informed. They consistently offer encouragement and empathy, and it shows in her with how she is doing and how happy she is! This is not like any other assisted living, this feels like Home!

Shady Oaks cared for our Mom during the last eight months of her life. Thanks to the extraordinary controls that Tyson, the owner and his staff have in place during the pandemic to protect each of their residents we were able to visit our Mom in person often, feed her, hold her hand and give her hugs. The staffs love, professional care, compassion and communication was amazing! We highly recommend Shady Oaks Assisted Living facility to any family looking for a home to care for their loved ones. We want to give a heartfelt thank you to all the staff, you made us feel at peace during a very difficult time.

There are very few times when I feel so strongly compelled to write a ‘thank you Google Review. This review shares invaluable information about our familys experience with Shady Oaks Assisted Living in Bristol, CT. I hope that others in a similar situation will be able to have the same positive experience for their families as well. Last year, my mother had a very debilitating stroke that left her paralyzed two months shy of her 90th birthday. Before that, she was a very active woman who enjoyed driving multiple times a week to Foxwoods where she loved playing Bingo! She loved her Bingo friends and aside from her many grand and great-grandchildren, it gave her life purpose! Although we started her new life post-stroke with private caregivers coming to the home around the clock daily, her health continued to decline and as a result, it was imminent that we needed to seek additional medical expertise. As ‘baby-boomers, many of us are now in the phase of life that includes the care and well-being of our aging parents. Throughout my own experiences, I found it very stressful and extremely difficult to locate nursing and assisted living facilities in Connecticut that offered both the medical expertise needed combined with the love and care I so desperately wanted for my mother throughout her final days. Sadly, interviewing a myriad of nursing homes and assisted livings across the state for countless hours at a time was not only depressing but overwhelming! However, with deep appreciation to the many people before us who wrote such favorable reviews about Shady Oaks Assisted Living in Bristol, Connecticut, it led me to this very special ‘home for my mother! Similar to the many positive reviews, Shady Oaks Assisted Living, provided my beloved mother a place that was not only safe with the optimal medical care but, gave her the love, and attention that any adult child could ever wish for their aging parent(s). With visitations and phone calls to my mother as frequently as possible (I live in Maryland), I came to know the staff very well. Consistently, they were caring and loving professionals who gently welcomed my mom into this very unique community by treating her like ‘family. The entire staff, including Tyson Belanger, the owner, and Director, and Nicole Guerrette, the Head Nurse, to the exceptional specialists and certified CNAs who provided my mother with the best possible care and medical attention. Sadly, my mother recently lost her battle as a post-stroke patient and passed away in August 2021. Our family will be forever grateful to your entire team for the continuous professionalism, love, and care they provided for her. Additionally, our heartfelt gratitude extends to you for always taking the time to keep our family informed of her condition throughout her stay. Shady Oaks Assisted Living, YOU are truly the ‘unsung heroes we so desperately need for our aging family members throughout Connecticut. On behalf of our entire family, we are deeply grateful for your exceptional service! Thank you!

Our Dad was at Shady Oaks for 6 months before his declining dementia got the best of him and we had to move him to memory care. My Dad is my hero and I wanted nothing but the best for him. Finding the right place for a loved one is extremely difficult to say the least. I cant say enough about the kindness and compassion my Dad received from all the employees and especially the owner Tyson the entire time he was at Shady Oaks. He was treated as family and they always tried to be accommodating to anything he needed or wished for. I wish he could have stayed there for the rest of his life but dementia is a difficult disease and progressed too quickly. I would recommend Shady Oaks to anyone looking for a safe and caring place for a loved one. We will miss Shady Oaks but highly recommend it!

My family and I were very fortunate to find Shady Oaks in late 2019 when it became clear that our father Ray was no longer able to care for himself in his own home. It was a wrenching decision to have him leave the house that he had lived in for over 60 years, but thanks to the caring staff and personal relationship he formed with Tyson Belanger, within a short time Shady Oaks became his new home. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit one year ago, Tyson and his staff responded with an isolation plan that kept all the residents safe from infection and illness. While visits became difficult, if not impossible for some time, it became clear that the bubble was the best course of action for all of us. My fathers care would have been unsafe, more costly, and simply unmanageable if he had remained at home with multiple in-home health care aides. We were so glad that Dad was able to live in such a small-scale, warm, and homey environment. It was startling how quickly he adapted to his new life there and settled into a routine of regular mealtimes and activities. A profound Thank you to the entire Shady Oaks family for the compassionate and heroic level of care you continue to provide during this most difficult of times.

My mother was at Shady Oaks for one year. Since I visited her everyday, I saw first hand the normal routines, attitudes and interactions. My mother was very dear to me and I could not have found a better place for her. I was totally at peace when I left her knowing that she was being taken care of as I would have. For any area of concern, Tyson really wanted to know about it and solved it in a fair and professional manner. The resident, staff and family are all part of what is best for the resident. Any reasonable request is accommodated. I would highly recommend Shady Oaks to anyone in need of their services.

Our now almost 96 year old paternal grandmother has been living at Shady Oaks for at least 9 years now. She has NEVER had complaints about her care, nor about the attentiveness of the staff. They have always addressed her needs. If shes showing signs of confusion slightly off of her baseline, the staff communicates to leadership right away and they find the root of the problem (which may mean sending a urine analysis-culture, having blood work sent based on the MD recommendation, or even a medication adjustment). Among many different services available, some are surrounding entertainment, hair, podiatry, and importantly - strict Covid-19 practices have been observed to maintain an impressive 0% resident infection rate. Our maternal grandmother lived at Shady Oaks also for many years and even comfortably passed on hospice in the facility. The family-run business has been running for decades and will continue to do so by the level of compassion they give their residents. My grandmother has been in a wheelchair currently for almost a year and there have been no reports of any sacral skin breakdown, which is a testament to the time they give to their residents. The Shady Oks staff will help family members feel at ease knowing they will be alerted if there are any concerning situations regarding their loved one and will ensure they have the best journey through the aging process. Thank you, Shady Oaks!!

My father spent his days at Shady with people who really cared about his interests, his health and well being. He was comfortable in the home setting and the friendly staff who were always around to help him, as well as to answer our questions. As an out-of-state daughter, I felt that he was always in good hands with the super competent staff that took the time to really get to know him, and even helped him come out of his shell after living alone for a long time. We had checked out several other facilities, and this was the first one that felt personal, where he would be an individual.

Shady Oaks gave amazing care to my father in his last year and a half. Dad was very happy at Shady Oaks. He felt that they look excellent care of him, that the staff was fun and friendly, and the atmosphere homey. I felt the same way. They kept me informed every step of the way during Dads decline due to his fatal disease. They helped him maintain his independence as long and as much as possible. As he lost his abilities, they helped him with compassion and respect. They were incredibly kind to me and my family when Dad was taken to the hospital for what we all knew would be his last time and again when Dad passed a few days later. The work that Tyson and his team did to keep the facility COVID free was simply amazing.

SHADY OAKS IS THE BEST PLACE… and here is why. My first recommendation for Shady Oaks came from a resident I recognized while touring the facility with Tyson. Having a special diet, he was able to maintain that and he raved about the food and lifestyle. Indoor and outdoor events are creative and fun. Staff members are professional, loving and thoughtful. My aunt has had outstanding care in her years here. Tyson has proven many times that residents are most important to him as are members of his staff, especially evidenced by his Covid prevention measures for the facility. This is a most caring environment, not only for residents, as this support extends to family members as well. Thank you, a job well done by all!

My mom moved to Shady Oaks in June of 2019 and the care has been amazing by the staff and Tyson. The steps that Tyson took during the Covid 19 shut down and continued safety procedures by the staff has been awesome! I would highly recommend Shady Oak for anyones loved ones. Everyone has been very helpful to help with FaceTime for my Mom and Dad to communicate during these trying times.

Shady Oaks was a god send for my dad and stepmom. The care they received was better than I could ever imagine, the staff, and Tyson the owner all go well over and beyond, treating each resident like family. When my dad passed they were right there by my stepmom's side for comfort, and assuring to my dad it was ok to pass and giving him peace. It's comforting to know that my stepmom is well cared for and never alone.

Sometimes in life during difficult times, you have the fortune of discovering or experiencing something that is simply just better than everything else. Without hesitation, I can say that Shady Oaks is just that. When our sweet mother, Elsie, needed round the clock care, I knew it might be a challenging transition for her, but with the love, kindness and exceptional care given her by the Shady Oaks staff, it wasnt long before she considered Shady Oaks home. In turn, the staff and other residents of the Shady Oaks family truly mattered to mom and her family. There are always social times, activities, entertainment, or just quiet times with perhaps one-on-one visits with staff to enrich the body, mind and spirit. Staff is always kind, compassionate, and professional... they are special angels, and we are eternally grateful to them. Thank you, Tyson Belanger, and your wonderful staff for making Shady Oaks the wonderful place that it is. You all truly work as a team in every sense of the word. Shady Oaks Assisted Living is the kind of facility that is so desperately needed in so many communities and is a model that others should strive to emulate. So very gratefully, Debbie Kelley on behalf of the family of Elsie Soucy

My mother, Mrs. Mary Ostroski, passed away recently having found a true home at Shady Oaks. When she first arrived 5 years ago, she had been living on her own , and Shady Oaks Assisted Living home was a new experience for her. Soon, she became an intricate member of the Shady Oaks community. She made friends, and the staff not only took care of her, but they became her extended family. Mom and the staff would joke; play games; enjoy crafts and musical entertainment together. Holidays and birthdays were celebrated with festive decorations and delicious traditional foods. Shady Oaks is about community and friendship and folks living amicably together in a home setting. Tyson Belanger, owner, can be called on 24-7 to assist families and residents when concerns arise. Belanger guides his staff in handling community issues impacting the residents. Belangers handling of the Covid crisis is a perfect example. He received national recognition for the safety measures he instituted. Additionally, his compassion and knowledge is what sets Shady Oaks apart from other facilities. My family and I highly recommend Shady Oaks for assisted living care.

We have nothing but wonderful things to say about Shady Oaks. My wifes sister was there for more than 12 years. She could be difficult to deal with, but everyone there was super nice and very patient. She even labeled several of those who cared for her, her sisters. Keep in mind she already had 4 sisters of her own!!! Having looked at more than 10-15 places in the greater Hartford area before making our choice, we know we found a gem when we found Shady Oaks. We would definitely make the same choice, were we to do it over again. Thanks to all at Shady Oaks!!!

Tyson, Nicki and all the incredible staff at Shady Oaks welcomed our dad with open arms when he moved in several months ago. It is a caring and supportive community, where he feels truly at home in his new home. As a family we sleep well knowing that his individual care needs are being met by people who are professional, dedicated and loving. All of this excellent care has been delivered in the context of the stress of the pandemic, which has had a devastating impact on residents of assisted livings and SNFs in CT and of course world-wide. In looking for a new home, priority was safety. We stumbled upon Shady Oaks through multiple articles (Google wont let me link them in this review) in the NY Times, NPR and CT Magazine that described how they created a bubble to protect the residents from the virus. We wanted our dad to live in a place where this level of respect for and devotion to the lives of its residents is a reality. And it truly is. Tyson Belanger should be honored for his extraordinary life-saving safety efforts and protocols, for keeping all residents COVID-19 free since the start of the pandemic! Shady Oaks is a remarkable assisted living because of the special people (humble heroes) who work there and we are blessed to have found it for our remarkable dad.

I had two parents who lived at Shady Oaks. The first was my mom, because she needed more care than she could get at home. My family decided to have her live at Shady Oaks. I lived in another state and was very concerned about her, but when I went to visit her I saw how happy she was! Tyson came to Shady Oaks the same time my dad did. He stayed with my dad that first day to make sure he was okay. My dad adjusted and enjoyed living there as well. It is a close knit community that feels like family, and I was always welcomed whenever I visited. I couldnt have asked for a better experience for my parents, and I will always have a fondness in my heart for Tyson and all the caregivers at Shady Oaks. The caregivers are very invested in the residents, and I always knew my parents were in good hands. Also, Tyson takes great pride in the aesthetics at Shady Oaks, and he has added artwork for the enjoyment of the residents. My dad always loved the music and activities as well!

It was a difficult decision to place my Mom in an assisted living facility. However, Shady Oaks has proven to be an outstanding facility under the watchful care of its owner Tyson Belanger. Tyson has proven his extraordinary dedication and relentless commitment to providing the best possible care and safety to all the residents and staff at Shady Oaks. Under his watchful eye, he has worked tirelessly to ensure a safe and secure environment under the most difficult circumstances during the COVID pandemic. His friendly and dedicated staff are extremely compassionate to the needs of each of the residents while keeping family members apprised on the welfare of their loved one. I whole heartedly thank Tyson and each and every member of the staff for all they do each and every day for my Mom's care at Shady Oaks. Three months after my mom was discharged from the hospital, we were told she could not go from rehab back to her assisted living facility where she had been living for eight years. Faced with little time and no easy choices we were very fortunate to have found Tyson Belanger and Shady Oaks. From day one Tyson and his staff provided mom compassionate, individual care. And mom told me after each visit , I love it here, good choice on my home. What makes Shady Oaks different? Is it the professional, attentive staff, with nursing care? Is it the warm, cozy, clean facility where mom had her own sleigh bed, and art work adorned the halls? Is it the social activities such as bingo, sing alongs, Halloween and holiday parties, and worship services? Mom would say it is all of this, but so much more. It is a warm hug after a breathing treatment, it is making you your own macaroni and cheese, it is welcoming your family and soliciting their advice on decisions concerning your care, it is respecting you and making you feel like you belong to a family not an institution. My mom recently passed away at her home Shady Oaks with Tyson, Nicky (Shadys nurse) and my husband and me by her side in her own sleigh bed. And I am writing this 5 star recommendation because I know my mom was blessed we made Shady Oaks her home.

In early January 2018 we needed a facility for our elderly aunt. We called a “Place for Mom”, and our request was sent to several facilities. We set up appointments to visit four on January 5th. Shady Oaks was our first visit. We met with the owner, Tyson Belanger. He was so impressive in a deeply intelligent yet understated way. He gave us the facts of the place without exaggeration. I am never one to make a choice without seeing all of my options but Shady Oaks was clean, bright, well taken care of and had an upbeat vibe. Mr. Belanger said they had one opening. We asked to see the room. It was a lovely pale yellow, with art on the walls and two double hung windows. Bright and beautiful! After seeing the rest of the facility and some further discussion, we made the decision to move her there (which we did two days later) and it was the best possible decision we could have made for her. And for us. She felt safe and happy there and she told us the staff was kind to her. Our aunt was one of the lucky ones – she had no cognitive dysfunction in her declining years. So when I asked her how she was, she would tell me everything in detail. We liked the fact that there were two nurses for 42 residents. The nurses were in touch with me on a regular basis and they were extremely compassionate with my aunt. They had a trained chef and the food was nutritious and tasty. In the dining room, my aunt was seated near a window with a bird feeder outside. It was perfect for her as she loved birds. There was usually a therapy dog on the premises. And they would bring in other animals for visits. My aunt loved animals and this was great for her spirits. There are large and small things that make Shady Oaks great. The small things are what truly make people happy on a daily basis. The kindness of others. The caring and compassion of all employed by Shady Oaks. The willingness to go the extra distance for those in their care. When my aunt died, Mr. Belanger came to her funeral. He gave us snapshots of her and the visiting animals. He told us again how much they cared for her and would miss her. This meant the world to us. I write very few reviews but Shady Oaks is so special, it needs to be reviewed. If you are looking for an assisted living facility, you really need to experience Shady Oaks. I cannot give it a higher recommendation!

This facility is as close to home as a resident can get. The staff is attentive and very understanding. There is not much turnover of staff which is good for the residents and very helpful to families. Whenever there is an issue the staff arrange transportation and appointments for my uncle. This facility is incredible! My cousin originally found it for my Uncle. Since then, we’ve had both of our parents reside here because of the outstanding care my Uncle received. As our parents in their mid-to-late 80’s, weakened both physically and mentally, the Shady Oaks team was able to balance all aspects of their care. While the Aides are all great and display much patience and respect for the residents, the differences compared to other assisted living facilities include: 1) RN staff on premises who can bridge the communication gaps across the healthcare providers and 2) Tyson’s personal involvement with every patient to ensure the best care is provided. Tyson & staff go above and beyond other facilities including providing financial recommendations and options for the residents. The facility staff-to-resident ratio is much higher than other facilities which allows for quick responses to resident or family requests. We can make the comparison to other facilities objectively because my father-in-law is geographically distanced and his care is not close to what is provided as an all-inclusive package at Shady Oaks. Finally, our parents lived their entire lives in the greater Bristol area and it was extremely important for them to remain in the area in order for their friends and other family members to visit them frequently. While we live out of state, the staff quick responses to our questions or suggestions enables us to feel like we are proximal and part of the team. It is always a leap of faith to place loved ones in the care of others - especially with all of the horror stories on the media concerning assisted living facilities - however, you will not be disappointed with the Professionalism provided at Shady Oaks. With Tyson Belanger in charge, we will have continued confidence in the facility for years to come.

Our mother had lived alone in her home of 60 years for a few years after our father’s passing. One day she fell and spent several hours on the floor before being helped. At that point she decided she needed to move to an assisted living facility. We contacted ‘A Place for Mom’ and they provided us with information about a number of facilities. We visited a few places and she made the decision that Shady Oaks was where she wanted to go because of how much it felt like home. After moving in, she got to know Tyson and the entire staff. She always felt welcome and safe, and was very satisfied with her care and the meals they provided. Everyone there was extremely accommodating, helping whenever they could to overcome her physical limitations. Tyson was instrumental in obtaining Veterans Benefits that helped offset the cost of staying there. During the last few weeks of her life the medical staff arranged for Hospice care which provided her with additional care and comfort until she passed. Because of all this personalized care, we would highly recommend Shady Oaks Assisted Living to all elders who would like assistance and care in a very homey atmosphere.

This to me, is the CLOSEST someone will get, for a home setting, as an alternative to living at home... ALL of the employees actually sincerely care for every individual who resides at Shady Oaks. Whether it is the cook, the housekeeper and especially nursing and the owner. Not many places truly do, others always put on front but, when it comes down to it, most head of facilities dont and look at residents as dollar signs. Tyson, is by far the most caring and compassionate bosses I have everrrr had. When there is an issue with residents or amungst the staff, he PERSONALLY looks into the situation at hand and fixes it immediately. Everyone is treated with the upmost respect and not to sound cliché but, all in all, its like one big happy family. The home is kept very clean and residents are helped right away with a wait time of maybeeee 3 mins TOPS and when someone pulls their light, its answered immediately. Everyone has their own routine, and we stick by THEIR routine to ensure that our residents are always happy. Staff always spends time to sit with everyone and give them love and attention that they deserve/need and are not on a time schedule...that to me is super important because most places are understaffed and overworked and rushing through care and responsibilities. NOTTT HERRRREEEE!!! One on one time is crucial and all of our residents receive special treatment. This is by far the best establishment I have EVER worked for/seen. I would definitely without a doubt, move any family member here if need be...

My mother had a serious heath issue two years ago. She was discharged from the hospital to a nursing home. We didn't want her to stay there but she was unable to live on her own, but we didn't know where to go. My sister suggested Shady Oaks. We set up an appointment and went to look at it with Jean, the former owner and Debbie (nurse). They walked us through and explained what services they would provide to my mother. She moved in in July 2015. While she had an adjustment period, everyone did everything they could to make her feel welcome and comfortable. Now she is happy, safe, has gained 20 pounds with all the good meals! I can go there any time and everyone greats me and gives me a warm welcome. All the promises made to us were fulfilled. Tyson has made many improvements, added more activities and has given the family resources that have provided very helpful and taken the worry away from caring for a elderly parent. We have never once regretted our decision to make Shady Oaks her home. We would highly recommend it!!!!

We moved our father to Shady Oaks almost a year ago. The transition went well and my Dad settled nicely into his new home and routine. We like the fact that it is a small facility that has that home like feeling. The staff is friendly and very helpful. When my father had to go the hospital for a health issue and would ultimately need rehab the staff at Shady Oaks made sure that we understood that they could provide whatever was needed to get him back on his feet. What is even more important is that my father is happy there . With that being said I would recommend Shady Oaks to anyone looking for a assisted living facility for there loved one.

It's a thankless job these people do every day and most of the time don't get a thank you from the patient and/or the family. Our family is there because we can't or won't do it because no time to old or no patience for it. Thank yo for everything you do and put up with.. you all deserve more!! Thank you
