My mother-in-law had been residing at Aegis of San Francisco located in South San Francisco for the past 2 ½ years, and overall, it is a nice facility with a dedicated and caring staff. However, we have experienced a series of 4 price increases during this time, which has left us feeling that Aegis prioritizes profit above all else. Unfortunately, these constant price increases in cost and management changes have made it difficult for us to continue affording their services. Initially, my mother-in-law was able to navigate the facility independently and even enjoyed walks to the dining room and around the premises after meals. However, her health took a turn for the worse a couple of months ago, and she now requires significant assistance from the staff. Understandably, this level of care comes at an additional cost. We were called into a meeting with the General Manager, Health Service Director, Business Office Manager, Care director and other management staff, where they discussed the increased care needs and the corresponding rise in fees. Regrettably, the suggested hike was nearly twice our current monthly payment, forcing us to relocate my mother-in-law to a different Assisted Living Facility. During our time at Aegis, we have witnessed three changes in General Manager positions, with the first two being incredibly compassionate individuals. However, the current General Manager lacks that same level of empathy. While she may offer polite greetings in passing, she has proven unresponsive to emails, which is disappointing. Aside from not responding to emails, she is rarely available for open discussions in which questions can be freely asked. Aegis has different rules for pets depending on whether they belong to residents or the General Manager. Obviously a double standard. While residents must keep their pets on leashes at all times, the General Manager's large dog is usually confined to her office by a baby gate (see photo). However, this dog is sometimes allowed to wander freely around the residents. As a dog lover myself, I understand the concern that a dog of this size could accidentally cause harm to senior residents by knocking them over. One incident involved a resident being disgusted with the dog pooping in the courtyard, so she took it upon herself to pick it up since the General Manager permits the dog to roam freely. It seems unfair that a resident who doesn't own the dog should have to clean up after it. During one of my wife's visits, she learned that a paramedic who had been called to Aegis was almost knocked over by her dog as it jumped on him. Similarly, during the same visit, my wife was almost knocked over as her dog attempted to jump on her while she was checking out at the reception desk. Thankfully, my wife managed to quickly evade her jumping dog. If it had been my mother-in-law, who uses a walker and lacks the agility to move away swiftly, she would have undoubtedly been knocked over by the dog. In summary, if you can afford the frequent price hikes and are in decent health, Aegis might be a viable choice for your loved ones. Nevertheless, it is disheartening to witness the shift in focus towards maximizing profits as your health deteriorates, rather than upholding the promised quality of care and affordability observed during the initial facility tour. We were verbally told that to expect an annual price increase of 3 to 5%, which turned out to be completely false, and I strongly urge you not to trust it. Experiencing four price increases in just 2 ½ years was extremely disappointing, and I highly recommend exploring other options.

First and foremost, myself and my mom could not be happier with the decision we made on moving her from a 2500 SqFt home to Aegis of San Francisco. It was not easy, it’s emotional and a lot of work. The folks we encountered at Aegis of San Francisco made it so much easier. Mom is now much happier, brighter, and perkier. The pictures from the first day to now are a big difference. I apologize in advance for the lengthy review. Moving a parent into an assisted living community is not easy emotionally or physically. There’s lots of moving parts so I’ve tried to cover as much as possible. From the get-go the staff from Aegis of SF have been incredibly kind, helpful, and an asset to the whole process. My first encounter was with Devon Kessler the Director of Marketing. She knew how to reach out and be supportive and not too pushy. There are other places I visited that still send me email, even after I told them no and why I said no. Devon was incredibly responsive once I said, “yes a visit please”. She arranged it so that we could meet in person (safely), talk about Aegis of SF and so that I could have a limited tour of the community. Please note Aegis of SF is a community and not in any way a facility. She started our meeting by asking me how I was, acknowledging that the process is not easy ant that she would be there through the entire process. From the tour to the interview and Chat with Chris Lyons the GM, to the interview with mom and their head of nursing, to picking mom’s apartment (even the wall color). She and Chris were there even on moving day. Chris made sure both mom and I had some lunch when we got there. Grilled shrimp salad, it was excellent and really appreciated. Chris Lyons the GM has been super helpful as well. After talking with me about my mom’s wants and likes she immediately started thinking of folks to get my mom engaged with on day one. She said she knew the perfect ladies to have her dine with as well as some other residents to engage with. Mom has made many, many friends. She says they laugh and giggle all the time. Additionally, after I said mom was particular about laundry and how it was done, she said “I know Sushi will be perfect for your mom, I’ll get on that”. She did and she was right! Chris thinks of each resident as an individual, and you can tell she cares for each one of them. Let’s talk about some of the other staff. Ayub the head of maintenance was indispensable, patient, kind and funny. We had a lot of furniture and such to move into mom’s apartment. Our movers weren’t the best, so Ayub and Devon made sure everything got taken care of and handled. Once mom and I got things unpacked and moved into place it was time to hang the pictures and the TV. Ayub came to my rescue, I couldn’t have done it and he was great. I couldn’t possibly mention all the staff (I’m terrible at names) there’s so many I’ve engaged with. I would have loved to call out people in the nursing/tech staff (Corrina is great), the Housekeeping staff (Sushi is fantastic) and in Life Enrichment (Jane is amazing!). The Life Enrichment program helps keep mom engaged, moving and having tons of fun. Google has a character limit. There's much more I had. Perhaps you can ask Devon at Aegis SF to share my entire Missive.

My mother moved in to Aegis SF about 1 1/2 months ago, she has age related dementia and it has caused OCD. She gets confused easily & thrives on routine. The staff here is very attentive and compassionate. They take the time to listen & help It's the little things that make someones life easier, Aegis caregiving has done this for my mom. The community is clean and the people who live there are happy. We are thankful we found this place. Just a wonderful community to be living in for seniors. Thank you to the staff for making it a comforting transition.

Thanks to Aegis for finally replacing the previous director AnneMarie, who was the only and worst negative of the SF operation, as she also drove away top talented staff and mangers at the time, who are missed. Todays Aegis (November 2020) has been covid-free for residents and staff (a huge accomplishment in our times), the interim director Kelly and current director Chris are angels, professionals, and ensure the best care is provided, the best staff are retained, that residents are as healthy, well fed (thanks Laurie), and engaged (thank you Jane) as can be, including both memory care and assisted living. No place is perfect, but Aegis SF is one of the leaders.

Spoke to Nicole who showed me around the facility. It's a comfortable homey environment that is impeccably clean. Dealing only with memory care that have catered to the needs of their residents with looping halls, memory boxes, and photos of the residents at the entry to their room. They honor the veterans that reside there and even have a private dining option for family meals when they come to visit.
