My mom has been living at Oak Cottage of SB Memory Care for 7 months now. Her health has been declining due to her dementia over a few years now and thankfully her husband decided to make Oak Cottage her new home. As her daughter, I am so much more at ease knowing that the care that she is getting is the type of care she had been craving. She is doted on and appears to feel special. Kim, Felipe, Dinah, Nona, Rose and Julien are all wonderful at their positions and the level of sincere care they give to all the residents is so apparent. You feel it the moment you walk onto the grounds. It is the kind of care you cannot just find in any employment pool. I love that the community is on the smaller side, which allows for a cozy, home-like feel. The 'Vibrant Life' program directors do a fantastic job keeping residents engaged with music, exercises, and scenic drives. I also love the fact that I can feel a part of my mom's day to day as Felipe posts all the wonderful photos, videos and events on social media outlets, showing all of the daily activities that he so graciously plans and executes like I have never seen. These photos and videos make it possible for me to see her all the time, which warms my heart. Before ending this review, I would like to mention Felipe Garcia, once again. He is without a doubt an angel. He has made it possible for me to have a face-time call every week with my mom. This alone has made such an impact on me, since I live a couple hours away and cannot be there as much as I would like. I hope that this review helps whomever is looking for a caring place for your loved one. Consider placing Oak Cottage of Santa Barbara Memory Care at the top of your list. *My background for 30+ years was in hospitality, with the last few years of my career at Senior Living Communities. I definitely know what it takes and how difficult it is to find the perfect team so that not only your loved ones can feel secure and safe, but as a family member, you can also feel, safe, secure & comfortable hugging and kissing your loved one good bye after your visits.

Several years ago, my wife was diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. As a scientist by training, I researched every aspect of memory care I could find, spoke with friends whose loved ones had entered residential care, and, together with my wife, visited fifteen assisted-living and memory-care facilities in the Santa Barbara area. The facilities ranged from places that seemed little more than human storage”some of which my wife called God’s waiting rooms”to luxurious, resort-style communities with swimming pools, multiple dining options, and estate-like grounds. At first, Oak Cottage was not at the top of my list because it did not feel like a resort. As my wife’s disease gradually progressed, however, I came to understand that she did not need a resort, nor did she need an impersonal institutional environment. She needed a warm, loving, and dedicated home. With that new understanding, I revisited all fifteen facilities. This time, I knew what truly mattered. I concluded that Oak Cottage was not only the best dedicated memory-care facility in Santa Barbara, but quite possibly the best in the surrounding area. Oak Cottage provides residents with assistance with toileting, bathing, eating, feeding, transfers, medication administration, laundry, and housekeeping. More importantly, these services are delivered with genuine warmth, patience, and affection. My wife has now been at Oak Cottage for several months, and she is thriving. The attentive staff keeps residents engaged through music, games, puzzles, exercise classes, personal interaction, and outings. Although my wife is wheelchair-bound, Oak Cottage has taken her around town, to the beach, and even out for pizza. A special thank-you goes to Julian, our driver; Kimberly, the Residential Care Director; Nona, the Activities Director; and Felipe, the exceptionally energetic Life Director. Their dedication, enthusiasm, and kindness have made a meaningful difference in my wife’s life. Oak Cottage may not have the extensive landscaped grounds or resort-style amenities offered by some larger communities, but it gives my wife something far more important: extraordinary care, personal attention, and love. I also deeply appreciate the staff’s regular communication with me about my wife’s health, activities, and emotional well-being. Knowing that she is cared for by people who truly know and value her gives me enormous comfort and peace of mind. As a special treat for me, Oak Cottage also hosts monthly parties”sometimes to celebrate a holiday and sometimes simply for the pleasure of bringing everyone together. With festive decorations, entertainment, wonderful food, and a warm, cheerful atmosphere, these gatherings give me the precious opportunity to spend time with my wife and, for a little while, feel as though everything is normal again.

My father's wife has been in their care, and from the moment we walked in, every person we encountered, from executive staff to caregivers to the chef in the kitchen, has shown genuine warmth and attentiveness. Oak Cottage Memory Care Community is attractive, clean and a comfortable safe environment for residents Felipe Garcia the activity director, carefully plans interesting, stimulating, and motivating activates each day for the mind and body of the residents. These include but are not limited to; scenic rides in the Oak Cottage Van, physical exercises, mental challenging brain work sheets, musical presentations, story reading, and trivia experiences of past history. A group of students from UCSB come each day to visit with the residents, initiate conversations, and build relationships. Family days are arranged once a month which include a Happy Hour of a delicious buffet that families can enjoy with their loved one. Felipe’s assistant is a great addition to the program. Nona has a giving heart, a wealth of knowledge and a devoted caring soul which builds a trusting, valuable communication and relationship with the residents. My mother has been at Oak Cottage of Santa Barbara for three years. I moved her from another Santa Barbara memory care facility when I realized she was being neglected by the staff at that location. I was so relieved when a space opened at Oak Cottage. One thing I learned in this process is that a facility that is dementia-only focussed is often much better than a place that offers all levels of care. Oak Cottage specializes on the care of a person with Dementia or Alzheimer's. I am a long distance caregiver. I live in New York and heavily rely on the staff at Oak Cottage to update me on any needs my mother may have. All staff is always available for conversations about her care or just a quick check-in whenever I feel I need to talk to someone. For the past three years I have been impressed again and again with the love and care my mother gets. She is always clean, her hair is brushed and done, with a flower and is hugged and cared for as any family member would, or maybe even better! They hold her hand and hug her every day! The facility is spotless and has a very homey environment. Her Alzheimer's makes her anxious and the caregivers know exactly how to soothe her and make her feel calm and safe, often without the use of medications. They know all her idiosyncrasies and when presented with a choice to move her to a hospice facility or keep her in place, I decided to keep her at Oak Cottage, knowing she is cared for, comfortable and in a familiar, loving and safe place. Oak Cottage has a unique and special program (Vital Life) designed for dementia patients and the coordinator is upbeat, enthusiastic and creative. My mom has flourished in this environment and has benefited from the daily music therapy and movement she has received. Another incredible feature at OC is they have an incredible events organizer, Felipe, who curates the most beautiful holiday and any-reason-to- celebrate events. The team takes pride in presentation and everything I have ever attended is well thought out and perfect for both families and residences.I wish I could attend them more often. Even the food is healthy, nutritious and delicious! I am grateful my mom is at Oak Cottage and it gives me peace of mind being so far away. I know I can even leave the country and feel secure that she's in good hands and well cared for. Everyone at Oak Cottage goes the extra mile! I feel so lucky to be a part of this wonderful community and I know my mom is lucky too!

Oak Cottage was the perfect match for my mom, who had advanced dementia. If you want staff who genuinely care about the residents and are waaaay more patient and caring than I could ever be, then this is the place. For the three years that my mom lived at Oak Cottage, my siblings and I were consistently impressed with how well the staff knew my mom, how kind they were to her, and the degree to which they went to make her happy. For instance, my mom loved hair pets, hugs, and word games, which the caretakers and other staff provided. While Oak Cottage is a bit pricey, the service is worth it.

I recently had the pleasure of witnessing the incredible care and vibrant atmosphere at the Oak Cottage where my husband works. In an effort to show my appreciation and enhance the residents' quality of life, I decided to bring over a special treat “ a homemade spread of delicious Vietnamese Spring Rolls with my special peanut butter sauce. Little did I know that this simple gesture would turn into an unforgettable experience for all involved. I definitely anticipate on going back and volunteering my time and share yet another wonderful experience at Oak Cottage. From the moment i entered the community, I was greeted with warmth and enthusiasm by the staff. Their genuine concern for the residents was evident, and it set the tone for what was to come. As the aroma of fresh flowers I noted several vases through the community filled the air, I could see the residents’ eyes light up with curiosity and anticipation of what new activity the community had in store for them all to enjoy. A special thanks to Felipe Garcia Vibrant Life Director for helping coordinate my visit and making me feel welcome. What followed was a truly heartwarming scene. The staff, always attentive and compassionate, took the time to personally interact with each resident as they sampled my Vietnamese treat. The level of engagement and dedication they displayed was remarkable, making everyone feel included and valued. It was wonderful to see the residents and staff not only enjoy the flavors of my food but also engage in conversations, sharing stories and memories from their own lives. As a nurse that has seen and visited other communities I can say Oak Cottage is by far the best memory care community in the Santa Barbara county.

My husband had experienced compounded brain traumas requiring 24/7 care. I selected Oak Cottage due to its close proxcimty to Cottage Hospital. It is a new building with AC (many locations don't have AC, it's a must for comfort!), cheerful, beautifully appointed and well maintained. These things matter. My husband thrives in the community of Oak Cottage. The caregiving team members are well trained, dedicated, caring, kind and loving people who bring a smile to my husbands face when he sees them. This was absolutely the best decision. Make no mistake, this decision to turn my husbands care over to someone else was near impossible for me. The caregiving team knows my husbands specific needs and I lean from them as I ask questions about his situation. That' is Peace of Mind that I never imagined! I see that every team member takes pride in their contribution in keeping the high standards at OC. During Covid, I saw this team go so beyond the call of duty to keep our family members safe and cared for...stretched beyond the limits. Yet, they pulled together and got it done. We could have never gotten through this emergency on our own. Deeply appreciative for everyones dedication and sacrifices on our behalf. As our mom's memory deteriorated, and her needs increased, we (her 4 living children) made the decision to move her up to Oak Cottage in S.B., where two of us live. From the very start, we felt relief, as OC helped with the move and got her room ready in such a way to make a smooth transition. Our mom has now been at OC for almost 4 months, and she seems quite content. As a creative person in her heyday, our mom loves dance, music and art, and OC has all kinds of activities for her. They even have encouraged her love of teaching movement classes to the other residents. Moving a person with dementia during a pandemic is quite a task, yet OC has found ways to maintain interactions for our mom so she doesn't get isolated or more confused. At the end of the day, we children have to answer two questions: is our mom safe, and is she contented? We think the answer is Yes to both.

The thought of "sending" my wife away due to her illness was devastating for me. How could I put her into the hands of strangers? As it turned out, she was not in the hands of strangers; she was in the hands of an extended family that cared for her as if they'd known her all of her life. The outstanding attention she has consistently received from attendants who not only care for her but also care about her over the past nine months allayed my fears and those of our daughters very quickly. Her disease progresses, of course, but the Oak Cottage staff keeps pace anticipating her needs.
