My brother and I toured Discovery Commons while searching for a new home for our mom after all the residents received the Notice of Termination of Tenancy from her previous assisted living community, where she had lived for nearly four years. Josephine Dugoni was marvelous in showing us the property. Discovery Commons is absolutely beautiful—immaculately maintained and in like-new condition—and we were impressed from the moment we arrived. After the tour, my brother and I agreed we didn’t need to look anywhere else. Josephine and Kiel went above and beyond to help with our mom’s expedited move-in, making what could have been a stressful transition remarkably smooth. Our mom has only been there a few days, but she is already enjoying the incredible activities and seems genuinely happy. Josephine has done a fantastic job helping her settle in and feel at home. It has been so comforting to see my mom smiling and thriving so quickly after the move. She struggled to adjust at previous communities, but this time has been completely different. The ease of this transition has been such a relief for our family. We feel incredibly fortunate to have found Discovery Commons and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a warm, welcoming assisted living community.

I cannot say enough about Discovery Commons and its caring and supportive staff! Being a firefighter for over 30 years, I have had the opportunity to respond to calls at various senior care facilities in the Bay Area. Discovery Commons is by far the best assisted and memory care facility I have ever visited. When my father was initially diagnosed with dementia our family had numerous concerns about the support we could expect him to receive from a memory care facility. After touring numerous facilities in Alameda and Contra Costa counties, we found Discovery Commons! The first person I was introduced to was Karyn, the sales director. She offered our family multiple tours often answering the same questions over and over with compassion and professionalism. Kiel, the executive director, continues to check in asking about my father and how he is adjusting. Both met with our family while simultaneously organizing the facility Christmas party! What is most impressive is the staff retention. This is so crucial to those individuals with memory issues. All of the staff have been incredibly attentive including but not limited to Shelby in maintenance, Lauren and Alexis in the dining room, as well as Mark, Andrew, Celeste, Maryann, and others who consistently check on my father, encourage him to participate in activities and help him to maintain his dignity. When he arrived, he was in a wheelchair. Now he struts up and down the hallways, sometimes without even using his cane. The activities that Josephine, the activity coordinator organizes like bingo, blackjack, daily walks, discussions, bus trips, Tai Chi, and musical events have all helped keep my father alert and engaged. The food is definitely above par with many meal selections available throughout the day. My mother and other family members make it a point to reserve space in the dining room to have a meal with my dad. It also helps that Lauren and Alexis are working hard to connect with the residents during a meal, often remembering their preferences and always calling them by name. We are very fortunate to have found Discovery Commons and are forever grateful to the directors and the staff. Thank you, Kevin S. and family

Wonderful experience from start to finish. Toured facility w/ Karyn, spent time touring both assisted living and memory care as well as the interior and exterior grounds and also the amenities (gym, salon, activities room, library…etc) After completing the necessary paperwork to move us into the next step my father and I came in, enjoyed lunch and then proceeded with his cognitive evaluation. Upon completion of that step I came back in to finalize paperwork with Kiel the Executive Director. The staff carries itself with kindness and professionalism and on the day of my father’s final move in we were meet by several staff members who introduced themselves and the role they would play in his transition into assisted living. The goal was to find a facility where my father could eventually transition into memory care and enjoy his time in the mean time in a welcoming and caring environment, a place where his safety and security is a priority.

Karyn, the Sales Director, and Kiel, the Executive Director, were both exceptional in providing support. I can’t even count how many times I reached out to them—before and after my father-in-law moved in—and each time, they responded promptly and patiently addressed all my questions. The nursing staff, med techs, caregivers, and the entire team were not only highly professional but also warm, attentive, and genuinely caring. They made the transition seamless and took the time to understand my father-in-law’s unique personality and preferences. Knowing he was in such capable hands gave us peace of mind. There were even moments when my father-in-law would forget he wasn’t still at home with us. I recently inquired about the Discovery Commons San Ramon and had the chance to meet Executive Director Kiel Stromgren. I took up most of his evening so much that he took me out to dinner as we discussed more about his community. The main focus of the conversation was about the staff and how passionate they cared for the residents. He was very knowledgeable when I asked the tough questions. I can tell he has done this for some time and could tell he spoke of his staff like family. Kiel was very attentive and patient when discussing his community. I felt guilty for taking up his time but he didn't bat an eye as if this was another Tuesday. I would highly recommend his community to anyone who wants that family feel and to not feel rushed into a decision. Although dinner was a surprise I can say I haven't had that experience with any other place I recently have visited. Thank you Kiel!

My father has been at Watermark in independent living for over a year. The atmosphere is exceptionally warm and caring. The facilities are newer and well-maintained; feels like a luxury lodge in the Sierras. All staff, including food service, cleaning, maintenance, driver, activities personnel, and receptionists are friendly and accommodating. The executive director is exceptionally responsive to the needs of the residents. Although Watermark’s owners changed during the past year, the level of service has been consistent.

Watermark San Ramon provided my family true solace in a time of overwhelming distress. Almost three months ago, my siblings and I had to move our father to assisted living and our mother to memory care after weeks of triaging their precarious situation: Our mom had Alzheimer’s 18+ years, and both our folks had broken bones from falls. Watermark’s entire team made the transition as smooth as possible, allowing our dad to acclimate within days and our mom to immediately receive the services she needed. Watermark San Ramon’s grounds and facility are quite nice, but it’s the people that are exceptional. Not only have our parents received excellent care, but Watermark’s team goes beyond performing their jobs well. Everyone I’ve met (office staff to maintenance to dining servers to upper management to caregivers…) connects with the residents and has time for them. For instance, the director of assisted living enjoys regular walks with residents, and the sales director helps my dad with his dog when needed (Yes, dogs are allowed in assisted living!), and servers make an extra stop by my dad’s dining table to check in with him when they know he’s been ill recently. It’s top-down: I often see the executive director spending time with residents. And the residents and their families are the same. So many kind people living at or visiting Watermark have assured my family that it’s a place where everyone takes care of one another. Indeed, within days of moving our parents, I had several new contacts (employees, residents, family of residents) in my phone whom I could call if needed. This was hugely comforting, as my siblings and I do not live near San Ramon. Recently, our mother passed away, and given the choice to move near one of us, our dad has chosen to remain at Watermark. He likes his apartment, the outdoor spaces, and the meals, and he’s comfortable with his routine, but it’s his appreciation for the people that keeps him there. I must add that being far away, I deeply appreciate Watermark’s timely communication. Emails and calls are returned ASAP, and I can count on the Watermark team to inform me of any concerns regarding my dad and to help me navigate them. Watermark San Ramon walks the walk. Beyond the practical details of our folks’ residential accommodations, we were told we’d find a community that looks after one another, and it was not lip service. Thank you, Watermark! Means the world, especially being so far away. My family unequivocally recommends Watermark San Ramon’s assisted living and memory care residences.

Updated 5/12/2024 My latest respite stay to Watermark exceeded my expectations. My room was clean as expected, but this room has an unusual extra - a recliner with a help-you-stand-up setting, which has helpful for people like me. The meals were delicious and varied. Colin and Katherine remembered my dining preferences. Chef Josh and his talented staff prepared nutritious and savory meals every day. The efficient and pleasant caregivers were helpful, even with the TV. The we-can-do-miracles staffers Peter and Shelby arranged their schedules to accommodate my special needs. This facility runs smoothly thanks to Mr. Kiel (Super Manager), with assistance from Nancy, the nicest concierge. I am a very satisfied client, and am looking forward to happily to my next stay here. I would recommend Watermark as a safe haven for respite stays. --------------- If you are looking for a clean, safe and pleasant assisted living home for a respite stay, this facility is worth checking out. I believe that Kiel, the general manager, put his personal stamp on the services and personnel. He was excellent at coordinating the various aspects of my respite stay. His pleasant outgoing personality was reflected in the attitudes of all the staff. Thank you Kiel. Marian S., my med tech and Sara, my caretaker were very professional and conscientious in dealing with my personal health. The food was heavenly, especially the desserts. Everything was well seasoned, and presented in an appetizing manner - the food said "EAT ME!". Josh and Jusef, the chefs, had all meals carefully planned to provide for a variety of taste preferences. Jennifer, Kate and the rest of the dining staff were great at remembering my meal preferences: I had requested half portions, which they remembered for subsequent meals. Thank you Watermark San Ramon for making my respite stay a memorable experience.

We were in desperate need for temporary care for my 94 year old mom. We had a lot of concerns as my mother had recently fallen and had other health issues as well. She had been at a skilled nursing facility and I desperately wanted her to be in a different environment. Kiel the executive director and Karyn were amazing to work with. They had a beautiful suite available. The bedroom and bathroom were very spacious. There was a mini refrigerator, a keurig and sink. Nice flat screen tv with access to Netflix etc. My Mom was provided with a pendant to wear in which she could press it whenever she needed assistance. They have a med tech that hands out the medications which was extremely helpful as my Mom takes a lot of medications. The food at the restaurant was delicious! Three meals are provided along with snacks. Staff is very accommodating. We dined with my Mom on several occasions and we were blown away by the quality of the food served. Although my Mom did not partake in any of the activities it was nice to see that they had a wide variety to choose from. Another wonderful benefit was that they have someone who comes in weekly to the salon. My Mom received a haircut and had a mani/pedi -cost very reasonable. The residence is beautifully decorated and the grounds are gorgeous as well. My Mom was very pleased with the care she received and she is not easy to please! We highly recommend Watermark.

For us, it is the perfect match and the place we will call home in the last stretch of our lives. Since then, we had experienced many growth pains with the lack of residences, activity and service inconsistencies, and constant staffing challenges for a little over a year. However, I’m happy to see things have finally stabilized since their current Executive Director, Kiel, had come on board. The community is now lively with more residents and activities, and most importantly, a great staff! They truly made us feel as part of a community, accommodating to our needs and provided us the comfort to know that our family was in good hands with their care. I’d highly recommend this community!

I highly recommend the Watermark for respite stays. Kiel was great in providing all the information we needed when we were looking for a assisted living facility for respite stays for my mother. We had originally planned a 10 day stay for our out-of-state vacation, which included an extra day after our return. As it turned out I must have caught Covid on the plane trip home, because I was sick the next morning and tested positive. Kiel made it very easy to coordinate extending her stay at Watermark for another 12 days while I recovered. I am very happy with the care my mother was given. She uses a walker, and is a picky eater, and Watermark was able to accommodate her well. Here are her comments about Watermark: "My second stay at Watermark assisted living Facility was better than the first. I tasted several meals that were absolutely delicious and presented as in an expensive restaurant. Thanks, many thanks to Chefs Fili and Betty and Chef Josh (the very talented Boss) for taking time to present my mini-meals as sample plates. A shepherds Pie shaped like a small tart with a large mashed potato Kiss topping would make anyone smile. Thanks also to Peter - driver and exercise instructor, Nancy - concierge, Jennifer - lead server and her staff, and I cannot forget Caregivers Vanessa, Lilia, Sarah, Claudia, and med techs Nadine, Maria,and Virgie. Thanks, many thanks to other staff members who are not named because I cannot recall their names. I appreciate your gentleness and compassion when placing me in bed, and not dropping me like a sack of stones and causing me to cry out in pain. The exercise classes were fun and a welcome change from boredom, also craft and cooking classes, and a special session with the local San Ramon police - Focusing on protection for elders. Of course there is no pressure to go to all the social events, but I went to as many as I could to get an idea of what was available. My room was spacious enough for me, clean and temperature controlled. Laundry service was good. My only complaint is I received only 3 showers and a few sponge baths during my stay. The staff said that 7 people were being trained so they would have more help in the future. Thank you for your courtesy and great decisions. Watermark is lucky to have Kiel as its chief administrator."

My wife and I lived there and loved it. Yes, it had all that was promised, but the best thing was the people. The staff was more than friendly. They became your true friends. The other residents also became part of your true community. It was a pleasant way of life. Of course, there were problems like any other lifestyle. They were solved together like a family. I have been so grateful for The Watermark at San Ramon and for their staff. The memory care team there took such great care of my mom through her last season of life, and treated her with dignity and kindness. The staff members were always attentive to my mom's needs and they did an incredible job of keeping me informed and connected (even texting me updates and sending me photos of activities). When my mom's needs increased their staff facilitated the process of bringing in additional support. On top of all that the facility itself is new, beautiful, clean, and inviting. I always felt welcomed and supported whenever I spent time with my mom there, and the personal hospitality was consistent from the front desk, to the care providers, to the executive leadership. Watermark was really the best decision we could have made for my mom, and I would strongly recommend this facility to anyone looking for long term care in the East Bay.

I moved my parents here about 3 months ago. Mom in memory care and dad in assisted living. We looked a many places around here and felt most comfortable at The Watermark. Kiel Stromgren, the Executive Director and the rest of the staff is very kind, attentive and hands on. The accommodations are very nice - feels more like a hotel/resort. The food here is by far the best I've seen at a Senior Living Community. It's also nice that my dad is able to see my mom in memory care daily. We moved my Dad into The Watermark at San Ramon several weeks ago. I have to say, I did not anticipate that this transition would go so well. I visit my Dad almost every other day, and he repeatedly says how much he appreciates the staff, loves visiting with all the residents, and is so comfortable in his new home. I don’t even have to ask him, he offers these great compliments. That was the absolute most important part for our family, to have our Dad in a place where he is happy. From the beginning, Kiel (Executive Director), LaQuisha (Activities Director), and Sangeeta all made themselves extremely accessible if we had any concerns, returned calls immediately, or interrupted what they were doing to help us get updates. Almost every time I visit Dad, LaQuisha is bringing great energy to the common areas, supporting the staff, and just having a good time with the residents. That stood out – having leadership highly engaged and visibly having fun. The staff has been so good with my Dad. He isn’t the most cooperative, and given the memory issues, doesn’t remember his limitations. I would say being patient, kind, and loving are basic fundamentals for this job. But this staff also has fun with him – bringing laughter out of situations that would otherwise be frustrating. One thing I was looking for – was a supporting cast that didn’t just show up to a job and clock in, but a staff that also portrayed that they loved what they do. This staff convinced me of this immediately. Food is great, lots of activities, residents are encouraged to participate in everything….which my Dad needed. He needs a push to engage with people, and he gets that here. I would highly recommend The Watermark. You can always tell when people are coming to work because they have a purpose and love what they do. That is the case here.

Just moved my MIL there yesterday (2023.03.31). Worked very closely with Kiel the director who has been absolutely superb in every way. He is all-in on making both the resident and the family comfortable. He made himself available anytime via his cell and he really likes the work he does. The facility is beautiful - warm, inviting, clean, no sense at all of being institutional. The staff are warm and caring. My MIL who has been very secluded for almost 5 years did not want to leave her home "up in the hills" but for various reasons she had to. In less than 24 hours, she was having lunch with 3 other new friends and showing joy. Wow!

My mother, having dementia, has been a resident of the memory care unit at The Watermark in San Ramon for a few months now. After losing her husband and caregiver of 62 years she was understandably extremely distraught and confused. The staff at The Watermark bent over backwards trying to help her adjust to her new living situation during a very difficult transition. All the staff are helpful and professional: from the care givers to the kitchen and front desk staff, to the administrative staff and Director of the facility – they are all wonderful. In addition to the staff, the facilities are great and the activities are plentiful and well managed. She is now feeling happy and secure. It's a hard to decision to make putting your loved one in the care of others but I would not hesitate to recommend The Watermark to families.

After my mother spent a few weeks in the ICU in Monterey, we wanted to move her closer to her children in the Bay Area to better care for her and to be with her as she recovered. Having experience with independent, assisted, and hospice care with my mother-in-law and father-in-law, we had a baseline for comparing The Watermark to other facilities. Starting with the initial visit, we knew The Watermark was the place for my mom. We selected The Watermark at San Ramon based on the staff, amenities, services, quality of the food, and its location near all her children. The staff was very accommodating on scheduling my mother’s move in. We were always greeted by the staff when we came to see her, and they were always very helpful. My mother had a nice one bedroom with lots of light and space. Whether it was the nursing staff, the restaurant staff, or the maintenance staff, they all always had a smile and a kind word. My mother’s mindset changed for the positive as soon as she moved in. She was engaging again with those around her. She loved her apartment and looked forward to things like mealtime and visits from staff and family. We signed up for the holiday dinner (the food was great) and for the first time in months, my mom looked forward to getting dressed up and wearing jewelry. It was the best that we had seen her in months. Sadly, my mother suffered a stroke the next day and after spending a day at the hospital, returned to The Watermark under hospice care. This was handled seamlessly by hospice and The Watermark staff. We remember that one night while sitting my mother, one of the kitchen staff brought down coffee and cookies for all of us. We feel that our experience with The Watermark and The Watermark staff was very positive.

Grandfather moved up from southern Ca to this location in the memory care. I went on a tour and it was so beautiful. The rooms are single rooms which is so nice and they were very accommodating. I felt like I was in a lodge. Felt very safe/ keys needed to get in and out of unit so no one wonders. The food looked good and the staff was friendly. Easy and fast to work with on admission .

Watermark at San Ramon gives you that sense of elegant resort living with wonderful and tentative staff. Sangeeta and Fareeza are two of the best nurses you and your loved ones could ask for. Sangeeta leads her team with compassion and Provides oversight to the team ensuring that they are trained and committed to caring for your loved ones. Josh, their talented chef creates the upmost delightful dishes aimed to please all appetites. His food is beyond amazing. I was amazed and comforted to see Keil, the Executive Director tending to residents and their families. It’s rare and certainly a testament to the care that will be provided to you and your loved ones. Hands on management is key to receiving great care in assisted living. The watermark at San Ramon Team leads the assisted living community straight to the top! Huge Kudos to Nancy and Shan at the front desk for always being so welcoming. The Garden has amazing activities for many levels and making sure residents get the audio, visual, and social stimulation that’s needed for memory care. This gorgeous community welcomes residents and their families for events such as Veterans pinning ceremonies, holiday celebrations, and works in conjunction with home health and hospice agencies to make sure their residents are able to thrive happily, comfortably and live their best lives.

My sister moved to the Watermark in January 2021 and it's been a wonderful home for her. She has friends, is active all day, loves the food (and has some added pounds.) The staff are terrific - friendly, nice, always positive and helpful. They treat people with disabilities especially those with memory care with respect and care that is authentic and sincere. They follow all health protocols and have kept the residents safe from Covid. The Watermark at San Ramon is like a small boutique hotel. And I recommend it to anyone who's seeking top-notch service, delicious and nutritious food, well-designed programs, and focus on each resident and his/her needs.

Ignore previous review, notorious reviewer for poor reviews based on location. If I could give 10 stars I would!!! Amanda, the general manager is amazing. So many wonderful, caring people work here! Danita, 10 stars! Ed, 10 stars! Michelle, 10 stars! Glenda, 10 stars! Jill, 10 stars and on and on! My mom was in another facility and was withering away from Alzheimer’s. Within a month at being at Watermark she put in 10 ponds and could hold her head up again. Yes she has a terminal disease but I truly believe with their individual care, the amazing food all prepared on the premises and their loving caregivers she has come to the surface to provide those precious moments we treasure. They SAVED her from disappearing completely for now. I researched every care facility from Walnut Creek to Pleasanton and was so discouraged until I found Watermark San Ramon. We are thrilled and the price was in line with the others. I’ve visited at all hours day and night and there are no nasty secrets like at our past place. Beautiful private rooms and yes they ACTUALLY DO the activities, many just post them. They do field trips and music and exercise. And they take suggestions and tailor care to your loved one! Folks do yourself a BIG FAVOR, visit Watermark San Ramon before you make your decision. This place is outstanding!
