My mom has been here for over a year and let me say, thank goodness for our independent care manager and caregiver who noticed 1) bruises on my mom's wrist and chest, with NO DOCUMENTATION (whether unnoticed or ignored by Kensington, who knows), and 2) my mom wasn't getting her briefs changed regularly, was super lethargic and uncharacteristically quiet this week. Turned out she had a massive UTI that NO ONE at Kensington detected, because they don't bother to provide incontinence care — they just say "hey, your loved one requires a higher standard of care so pay us more." Spoiler alert: the price tag doesn't come with better care. Glad we are getting out of here. I fully expect to be pulled into the office and shamed for this review, so let me say: BRING IT ON. You asked how my experience was.

Kensington takes such good care of mom! Every time I go there there are people encouraging her and looking out for her, and they really do work as a team to take care of everyone. There are all kinds of events to bring joy to the residents and to bring families together. I couldn't chose a better place for mom.

Kensington Place care team and overall management have been so supportive and respectful to my mother since the moment she moved in. She is treated with dignity and kindness everyday. The staff involves her in a variety of activities and they even provide weekly local outings which she particularly enjoys. I feel so much less stress since she moved to Kensington Place. I know she is getting such excellent care.

Kensington changed our family's life completely. My dad was diagnosed two years ago, but then declined more rapidly than we expected following his diagnosis. We were completely committed to taking care of him at home with my mom at the helm. My mom has super powers in terms of care and organization. If anyone could manage it minute-by-minute, it was her, but it quickly had become a 24 hour job for her and myself as well despite the fact that they had caregivers almost 40 hours a week. Our lives became consumed with medication management, a constantly rotating cast of caregivers, managing doctors appointments and queries, making sure he was eating and drinking enough, exercising enough and on and on… We were terrified to ever move my dad somewhere -- especially with dementia. It really seemed like the worst case scenario one would consider with an aging parent, but Kensington is different than all the rest. My dad's life and our lives have been completely transformed since the second we arrived there. His health has really been stabilized, he has a routine every day, a team to manage his meds, regular meals, outings to places like Filoli and the Bay, movies every night, and happy hour every afternoon (faux cocktails) with live music. Now we visit with him every day and just enjoy our time together rather than being consumed with all the logistics of supporting him. Kensington welcomes us any time of day. I truly feel like they have nothing to hide and are happy to see us any time one of us walks through the door. The staff is incredible from the top down inside and out. Everyone is kind, thoughtful, welcoming and conscientious. They are clearly all invested in their jobs. No one is just clocking in and out. The executive director, Alberto, is wonderful and intent on making sure every drop of Kensington is working properly which is a challenge with so many moving parts. I don't know what the exact ratio of care partners is who look after the residents during the day, but there is always someone a few feet away keeping an eye out, helping or just holding a hand. They are always so lovely and truly know my dad and are eager to give me updates on how his day or night has been. The nurses are equally kind and knowledgeable. They are rigorous with their meds and flexible if he sleeps in and makes sure he doesn't miss anything. The heads of nursing & care partners are lovely and incredibly diligent about knowing and understanding the details of every resident. The head of activities and entertainment never stops coming up with fun things to do in house or for an afternoon out. She is always running around taking pictures for holidays or birthdays. The food has been terrific which has been a pleasant surprise. It makes it even easier to stay for a visit when you can join for a decent meal. Kensington welcomes and encourages family members to join residents for meals which is wonderful. They also have special meals for Mother's Day, St Patrick's Day and everything in between which all families are encouraged to attend. All the rooms have a kitchenette (just a mini fridge and sink with cabinetry) a generous bathroom and closet space. The rooms are always kept clean and tidy, nothing smells or feels neglected. The common spaces are nicely decorated, comfortable and inviting. There are weekly zoom meetings with the executive director where he shares what's going on and fields any questions. There are also weekly zoom family meetings which is just for residents' families to get together and ask questions of each other and to share any concerns. The only challenging part about Kensington is the price which is hefty, but I feel like they're actually spending it on staff and quality of life for the residents. There has been some turnover of staff since we arrived, but this seems unavoidable in this world of senior care in our experience. They've quickly found replacements and terrific people each time. All in all, I couldn't recommend Kensington more highly if you are in a situation similar to ours.

My mother-in-law has been at Kensington for over a year now. This was the best brunch in terms of food quality we've ever had. Tony went out well! My only complaint is that it (as brunches before) was promoted as a "Champagne Brunch" and there was no champagne to be found. That's understandable, but it would be more truthful going forward to promote brunches as simply as a Mother's Day brunch or a Sunday brunch, not a champagne brunch. OR really pour champagne. My two cents !

My mom has been at Kensington since 2019 and I never come to the 'events' that are held - I always avoid them. This was my first time and I cannot say enough about how well this was organized, the amazing staff that were so attentive, the music - these two guys are AMAZING, and Tony's brunch! Tony's setup with the waffle and omlete station was great! We were given a nice table, waited on, and if I needed anything the staff was a split second away from helping - all with gracious smiles and so happy to help. Thank you for making this day special for my both of us. Catherine Fayer's daughter Pam

My 90+ year old mom with mid-stage dementia required placing in assisted living. Her initial stay at a beautiful new facility in Burlingame was distressing. There was zero management and unskilled/unsupervised staff at the facility and walking in and finding residents with black eyes and newly broken bones was distressing Just as the pandemic was beginning in 2020,we knew we needed to move her to a place which appeared better equipped to provide care and that could be trusted. We had no idea of the visitation shutdowns and room confinement that was soon to begin. Under any circumstance Kensington would be an exceptional placement. In addition to their expertise and 100% commitment to dementia care, they also are an extraordinary group of people of warmth and caring. During the lockdown, they made sure to engage their residents in daily activities. They can do accomplish this because of their level of staffing which, trust me, is unusual. We have toured practically every facility in San Mateo County and never saw more staff than at Kensington. They are all caring and warm. They also have the considerable expertise of nurses on staff. This is not true of facilities with "med techs" who may or may not be supervised. While we were not allowed to visit internally, all sorts of accommodations were made to ensure contact. And they sent photos or posted them on an individual account. And, on your tours, see how many staff are on their phones. You won't see that at Kensington. The front desk staff also deserves mention. They are wonderful connectors to staff and services. Everyone is engaged in the care of residents. The chef finds out about food preferences and indulges them. The chef even got involved in creating activities for residents including food tastings and games. And, I must mention the music. Now that the virus situation has returned to "normal" they have returned the daily afternoon "mocktail hour." There is live music of all sorts along with dancing—that's when many residents come alive. Those who can, dance. The staff joyfully joins in. And even if standing isn't possible, there's chair dancing again with staff. It is more expensive than other assisted living but if "you get what you pay for" was ever true, it's true here. Everything is taken care of and when issues arise, you know they will be solved with the best interest of the resident in mind. There's also an extensive resident intake form so that all caregivers can learn about the residents' history, family, preferences, etc. This also contributes to the wrap around care offered. Our family has nothing but gratitude to everyone for taking such good care of my mom. The caring, attentive and accommodating staff are truly missed.

My parents have only been in Kensington Place for about a month and already I've noticed a distinct difference in their overall wellbeing. My dad is more compliant and calm, my mom feels spoiled and is noticeably healthier. I looked at a lot of facilities as we made this difficult decision. This place is a great fit for my parents. The staff all know my parent's names, their likes and dislikes and treat them with dignity. When they need a helping hand, someone is there within mere moments to assist them. I'm so grateful for this environment for my parents.

I previously worked at Kensington Place and the company is top notch. The team at Redwood City-North Atherton are also the best in the industry. I love their philosophy of Happy team, means happy residents. I was very lucky to work here amongst people who truly have a passion and caring for their work. I would not hesitate to work here again or place a loved one. Everyone here are leaders and disruptors of the industry. The bar of quality is raised pretty high here.

Kensington Place made the last year of my dads life as comfortable and enriching as it could possibly be. The staff was incredibly nurturing and loving. Everyone I met went above and beyond to help him have the best quality of life. For example, when my dads appetite diminished, Chef Tony seemed genuinely concerned that he wasnt eating and asked what foods he could make that might tempt him to eat more. The staff also always made our family feel welcome. It is such a warm environment, not just because of its beautiful decor, but because of all the people that make it their lifes mission to take such special care of the residents. I will be forever grateful that my dad got to live the last year of his life in such a wonderful place.

Kensington Place posts its mission statement in the front hall -we care for your family member the way we would take care of our own family member. That is a tall order, but they do their best to do it. The facility is beautifully designed, and immaculately maintained. The room cleaners carefully dust every inch, and gently restore order each day, truly caring about the feeling of each room. The chefs and their kitchen and dining room staff provide outstanding and delicious food, and combine warm personal attention with restaurant style service, making meals effortless and a daily pleasure. The concierges welcome visitors, help coordinate communications, and provide friendly conversation for residents. The care staff are always in motion, attending to each persons immediate needs, with a remarkable tenderness. Nursing and administrative staff and executive management are extremely experienced and competent. They welcome each new resident as an individual adding to the richness of the community, and have provided excellent advice for us with regard to the ever-changing challenges that arise. They are truly committed to their mission of creating a spiritually nourishing community. The daily activities are varied and thoughtfully delivered, with skilled leaders and staff assisting to meet the varied needs of residents. The daily music hour is something very special, and they are providing off-campus outings for positive group experiences of the world outside the facility. We have experienced several facilities, and Kensington is head and shoulders above the rest.

My best friend Gloria started expereincing dementia, and I did not know what to do. Kensington Place opened up around 5 minutes from my home in Redwood City, and I went in for a visit. This place is amazing! We placed my friend there shortly after that, and I am there several days a week to visit. I love going there, it has such a feeling of peace, the food is amazing (pictured below), and the activities are unending! The happy hour is one of my favorite times of day, where there is live music and dancing every day. I hope that when it comes time for me to not live on my own, I could specify Kensington Place for me. The staff look the residents in the eyes, treat them with respect and their care is thorough and kind, even when the resident is confused about what may be happening. They have endless patience and have so much to give to the residents and their families. The photo below is of my friend at their annual luau held in August last year. They have festive decorations and fun food, and always entertainment - the hula dancers were delightful! At Kensington Place, they celebrate just about everything, but mostly, they celebrate life. I cannot begin to say enough about how terrific KP is. We moved Mom and Dad (Alzheimers and PD-Dementia respectively) to KP from a large, not to be mentioned facility in Foster City, in December last year. From day one, we ALL felt at home and had peace of mind that Mom and Dad were safe, well cared for and definitely well fed and hydrated!! Unfortunately, Dad developed pneumonia and passed away in early January. The staff was so incredibly caring of Dad, Mom and our family in those last days. I can not imagine his passing having been any more peaceful and smooth. The staff at KP worked well with the Kaiser Hospice staff and kept us informed and cared for. Mom continues to live there and is thriving as much as is possible with Alzheimers. I am an RN at a major teaching institution in the area. My first job was at a long term care facility, so I know from which I speak. I can not say enough about the lengths the staff and administration go through to ensure their residents enjoy what time they have left in love and safety. Our family is completely happy with the care we have received at KP and look forward to a continued relationship with them.

I visit often and find everyone to be upbeat and content. The personal care is excellent, the food is a wide variety and as good as a Michelin restaurant. The atmosphere is that of a true home. The care givers are extremely passionate and understanding of each residents needs. I feel most fortunate to have found a perfect home for my husband.
