Vi at Palo Alto Retirement Community – Reviews
August 2023
The Independent living part of the Vi was fine, but the Skilled Nursing section, which my father was in for about 6 months after a fall, was not. He was neglected often, left with soiled clothes and sheets for hours, if not overnight. The services that SN claim to provide for their patients, such as a shower twice a week, were only provided if we contacted the staff. Otherwise he would not get a shower. When we complained to the management were were assured that things would change, but they did not. The Vi advertises itself as 5 star, and my father paid a huge amount of money to this company over many years. He chose the Vi, in part, for the long term care they provide. Sadly, the last few months of his life were spent at Skilled Nursing, where he would be left for hours on his own, often unbathed, sleeping in his street clothes.

My Parents moved into Vi not long after it opened. I’m leaving this review, as they both passed in 2016. Vi treated them right, and family right, during and after their long lives were over. I am grateful. Even readying their “owned” apartment for return was as painless and straightforward as possible.Vi is pricey. What a place if you can swing it. It’s beautiful, luxurious, and relentlessly cleaned and maintained. The food ranges from good to outstanding. Visitors enjoy shared meals in elegant surroundings. The Bistro offers well-prepared simple fair, at below-market prices.Whether a broken hip on the mend, or worse, the subsidized adjacent skilled nursing is a marvelous way to recover medically, in comfort, with good care, close to loved ones, residing next door (Visiting is easy).Vi staff is dedicated. They learn everybody’s quirks and dietary requirements (dining makes that essential). Caring and cheerful. Mutual respect is the norm.Vi is a community where most residents enjoy an active lifestyle, intellectually, socially, and physically (quality gym & indoor pool). After a decade and a half of exposure, I felt compelled to leave this positive review.

We were taking a stroll and found this community along the route. Experience limited to outdoors. Very scenic and peaceful.

Caring
Vi at Palo Alto was extremely high-end and high-priced. The staff did a good tour and explained everything. It was very professionally done. It's a little too stuffy and high class. They're appealing to Stanford professors. They had a very professional approach. They have lots of facilities, travels, and tours and lots of activities. The sales guy that I talked to was very professional. The facilities are beautiful, very well-maintained, and well-designed.

Caring
The Vi is a continuing care community, but I can speak only to the Skilled Nursing portion. I was there for a month for rehab after surgery at Stanford. It was excellent! My mom was in a good one on the East Coast, and I was her caregiver and there A LOT so have familiarity with them. The ratio of CNAs to patients at the Vi was much more favorable than what I was used to with Mom's. When I pressed the call button, someone usually answered within a minute, and a CNA or nurse would be in momentarily. They were uniformly caring and competent. The Vi contracts for the OTs and PTs - and I had excellent ones! There was only one substitute PT I didn't care for, but didn't have to see him again. The facility is very attractive, with many outdoor areas (my room looked out at a small courtyard). The Skilled Nursing rooms are smaller than Mom's was, that's my only nit-picky complaint. The food was above average for institutional food. Overall, can highly recommend their Skilled Nursing.
