Guardian Angels helped care for both my parents during 2018-2022. First my father, and then my mother fell infirm and bedridden. The situation was challenging to say the least, and Guardian Angels provided male nurses for my father and female nurses for my mother. They ensured complete coverage, even through the covid times, and I consider myself indebted to the firm for their service. Frankly we would have been lost between them. The firm employs mostly young men and women sourced from northern Kerala. They are provided with basic training and an apprenticeship, where they participate in patient care along with a more experienced nurse. They have also a network of doctors on call, who come to the house on an as-needed basis to provide evaluations and can even prescribe medications at a pinch. Depending on the severity and type of care required by the patient, Guardian Angels provides various levels of care. In our case, both nurses were `live-in’. They provide complete care of the patient, including bathing/cleaning, providing medications, changing their clothes, helping them through prescribed activities such as walking or exercising. They are not housekeepers or cooks… the firm stipulates that such activities must be provided by the family. As can be expected in this sort of arrangement, the quality of the care depends a lot on the specific nurse assigned. Guardian Angels rotates the nurses regularly for a variety of reasons, varying from patient or nurse preferences to (I suspect) preventing too much attachment between the nurses and the family. Some of the nurses we were assigned were wonderful, going out of their way to engage my parents. Some of them were just doing their job and just did what was expected of them, and a very small number were unsatisfactory, and had to be replaced. This latter situation was not always the nurse’s fault, the success of a nursing arrangement depends considerably on the chemistry between the patient and caregiver, and there was the occasional situation where an experienced and well-recommended nurse just did not click with one of my parents. Covid put severe strain on the arrangement. Guardian Angels lost a significant number of their staff, and furthermore any nurse that tested positive could not work. Despite this, they ensured that we did not lack for care even for a single day. Having said that, the quality of care did suffer on the average during this period. But what would have been had they not been in our lives does not bear thinking about. Guardian Angels is not inexpensive, and I suspect the price might put them beyond the range of many. The price that they charged increased by 50% during the duration of our relationship. My read on their business plan is that their target customer is an elderly person who has enough of an income/means to pay for their services or their well-off children who lack the time or resources to provide care themselves. Our parents have both passed on now and have left behind grief and guilt among their children, who will always wonder whether they could or should have done more for them during their twilight years. But such feelings would have been magnified tenfold if it were not for Guardian Angels.

This community was fine very nice. It appeared clean and well maintained. The staff was informative and nice. They accept residents with the different level of care needs. This is a private home set in a residential community. They didn't seem to offer any activities.

As far as I am concerned, they did everything to make her comfortable. She seemed much better there, because she had a rough time in transferring from place to place and the staff there made her feel wanted and special and they did an excellent job. We don't have any complaints.
