My brother has been at The Blaire for almost one year. 3 beds per very small room with about five feet between beds. At first, he had a regular nurse, and she did a great job with him. After time went on, I started noticing more things. Patients in their wheelchairs all lined up in the hallway. Wet pants on some and very full undergarments on others. I also noticed short tempers from staff towards patients to the point I made sure to express myself to the staff about it. I remember seeing my brother sitting in the dining area waiting for his lunch to be served. When lunch came and I saw what he was supposed to eat I was not happy. The food smelled very foul, as in bad, to the point I said that to the staff. I said "you wonder why he doesn't eat his food here? Would you eat this?". They all said no, they wouldn't. I told them the food must be expired. They say it wasn't. Then I see an Aide sprinkle salt all over my brother's cottage cheese. I asked why she would do such a thing. She just smiled at me. Just then I saw a staff member being rough with a patient and told him that I see what he is doing and am happy to make a complaint about it. I always brought my brother food, and he always ate it like he hadn't eaten all week. The second to last time I visited, I was feeding my brother in the dining area with food I brought for him. Just then, I see a small rat walking across the floor. I went to take a picture of it and it ran away. I asked a staff member if they had rodent issues and he said "no". But then I look around things and see little rodent traps around the areas semi hidden. My last visit, my brother was sitting in the hallway hanging over his wheelchair. Staff kept walking by and nobody did anything at all to help him. I stood in disbelief with a handful of food and could tell something was wrong. I put the food down and helped to readjust my brother to feel he was very hot to touch and could keep his eyes open. I asked several times to touch him and take his vitals but I was told by 3 staff members that he was fine and there were no issues. I was able to get him to drink an entire x- large drink of his favorite, Coke a cola but he still fell asleep quickly. Rethinking things now, I should have always brought him water to hydrate because he rarely ever received that from what I saw. The only times there was any liquid was at mealtime or maybe medication time. I saw my brother was wet and couldn't stay awake. I asked his nurse again to check his vitals and was told he was fine and asked if he was eating for me. I am not a nurse but my first response to the nurse was if I tried to feed him now, he will aspirate. He is wet and can't stay awake. Please change him and put him to bed. That was at 1pm. I was told they will change him very shortly and put him in bed. I left and the next morning my sister-in-law called me. My brother was taken by ambulance at 6:30pm because he was experiencing severe sepsis. What happened to changing him and noticing his condition at 1pm??? Did they just leave him in bed to sleep until someone finally decided it was time to change him at 6pm. That is my thought! His urine was nearly black! He had temperature and when I went to the hospital his nurse asked if I noticed his urine at the bottom of the bed. In which I replied that I have not ever seen anyone's urine at the bottom of their beds. My brother had a bag attached to his leg that needed to be changed regularly. The nurse in the ER explained that is why your brother is in this condition now. Urine is supposed to be at the bottom of the bed, so it all flows down. Keeping it on his leg makes it all flush back to him, creating a septic environment. Fast forward a few days. As a family we learn that his sepsis is an incurable one and it will return fairly soon. We add a DNR as we learn he will not be able to survive this sepsis. He has weeks to live. I would never bring a family member there if you loved them!

I went today to drop off a loved one, I was horrified at the conditions, no one greeted ( even though they knew we were coming) the first person we encountered tried to find us a nurse and she stated “ no one wants to work here” I can’t find anyone to answer you” people falling out of their chairs , several people. Very crowded rooms, 3 beds to a room . Nowhere to put anything personal, ie pictures, lamp, very uncomfortable mattress. No comfortable chairs . We did not leave our loved one there , took her home .

No one wants to see their loved ones living anywhere but home. No one wants to see them get so lost that they have to be contained...no one. Seeing my mom at the blaire house was alarming. No it is not bricks and sticks. It's older and not updated and when I first walked in my heart was in my throat...BUT I saw my mother who had been to so many facilities as we struggled to get her stabilized, be treated like a human again at the Blaire house . Unfortunately for our circumstances she really went there to die. Which was hard and sad. I can not say enough about the team at Blaire house. They cried with me and then helped me pick myself back up and take care of my mom. They were kind, gentle, confident and incredibly patient. I was there often to be with my mother in her final days and I watched the way they worked and interacted with the residents. It brought tears to my eyes to see the way they interacted with compassion and humility. This is not a fancy place. If I had all the money I would go in and revamp everything BUT what I learned is that people who need to be there don't need the bells and whistles. They need safety, human interaction, compassion and frankly...love. Don't judge a book by its cover . Take it from a daughter who stood by her mothers side as we navigated the worst disease I could have ever imagined. My mom was an educated and vibrant woman who in her end was reduced to a paranoid, scared and angry toddler. She needed help and while we got there too later in her journey the Blaire house met us where we were. When everyone else gave up on her. She was too "difficult" the Blaire house showed us that there can be a different approach. This may be a small building but they do a great job caring for the residents on an individual basis. They have many staff that have worked there countless years which allows for continuity of care for both residents and family members. The activity department is also great with consistent daily activities and special events when possible.

Sharing from a daughter who's Mother is a resident. We are all on a first name bases and I adore each and everyone of the staff members. From the front desk, to the nurses station, to the activity girls, the kitchen staff and all the other amazing staff I am thankful for this facility and the job they do. It's extremely hard not being able to care for my mom around the clock but I know this staff tries their best to, and I find so much comfort in it. The Covid precautions they have taken is extremely sanitary and eases the visitations. Thank you to everyone here, you are appreciated!
