I do not yet have a family member in residence, but I will comment on what I have observed from visiting a number of Assisted Living and Memory Care facilities. This is the only facility I visited where staff from administrative to maintenance workers appear to be knowledgeable in communicating with residents who are in various stages of dementia. It is the only facility I visited where residents AND staff appear meaningfully engaged. Facilities can be attractive on the outside (and this one definitely is also), but it's the interactions that matter to me. Nothing compares to what I have observed at Brookdale. It is also significant that they offer a free support group for caregivers that is open and welcoming even to caregivers of non-residents. Attending one of these will give you a very good sense of the mindset at Brookdale and you can talk to families who have residents and families with loved ones elsewhere. Care decisions are very difficult, but I highly recommend attending the support group and taking a tour of Brookdale to guide your decision-making

Having my Aunt at Brookdale Roanoke is like having her with family. The decision to move her into a memory care facility was very difficult, but with every conversation I had with Brookdale Roanoke, it became very clear that this was the place for her. Quality of care and the quality of the staff is above the bar! I am so grateful for each and every one who have helped make the transition as smooth as possible. My Aunt misses her home, but loves being at Brookdale; she loves the staff and enjoys all the activities they provide. It is home away from home!

Good facility. Clean with good staff. My mother was a resident there. The nursing director, Amanda Walkup was excellent. If she is still there, I would highly recommend them. My mothers care was very good and we had no problems.

Brookdale Roanoke is a wonderful place for mom or dad. The staff is friendly and very connected to residents. Currently, my mother-in-law is residing here, and we are very happy with her care. My mother (who has passed) was a resident there from 2009-2011, and was well taken care of. The nurses and the office staff are very easy to work with you on requests for your loved one. I would recommend Brookdale Roanoke to anyone who is looking for Dementia care in the Roanoke Valley area.

It was a difficult decision to place my husband in a facility when we could no longer care for him at home. Tom, the Marketing Director, spent a great deal of time helping me through the process, answering my questions, and making me feel comfortable about the decision. Aaron, the Executive Director, worked to make my husband welcome and comfortable. He really got to know and appreciate him. Aaron continues to check in with my husband and monitor how he is doing. Finally, I cannot say enough good things about Amanda and her nursing staff. She is caring, thorough, and involved in every aspect of his well- being, mental and physical. She put in many extra hours checking on him and insisting that he get the best care when he was hospitalized, which eased the burden and worry I carried. How wonderful that even when he isn't physically at Brookdale, he is stilled being watched over! They are all caring, able and involved. I am grateful beyond measure to be on this journey with the staff of Brookdale.

I could not be more pleased with the care my husband received at Brookdale Roanoke. He was kept clean and comfortable. Most importantly, it was apparent the staff was knowledgeable and very caring. In short, if a loved one needs to go to a memory care facility, Brookdale Roanoke gets 5 stars from me (and I and my family checked out many facilities before choosing Brookdale Roanoke.) We definitely made the right choice.

2014 was the first time we visited Brookdale Memory Care on Persinger Rd. Mom had recently been diagnosed with dementia. At the time she needed assisted living accommodations but we knew that at some point she may need to step down to memory care. We wanted to know what all options available to us. We were impressed with the staff and the facility. The facility itself is unique in that its interior design is intended to help memory care patients connect with memories from their past (they can explain it better). in 2020, in the midst of Covid we had to step mom down from assisted living to memory care. Because of Covid, I was not able to visit mom during this period. I had to trust that mom was being cared for properly. The staff was good about making sure I stayed informed. They were always responsive to my questions and needs. It wasn't until mom became sick, and ultimately we had to call in hospice that I was able to see mom. Brookdale made arrangements for me to be able to sit with mom in her final days. While there I was able to witness the staff interacting with the residents for the first time. They didn't know I was watching them, but I was. I paid close attention to how they spoke to, encouraged and redirected the residents when necessary. It didn't matter what the person's job there was, I watched them, from the maintenance personnel to the nurses and other care staff, they all addressed the residents gently and kindly. What concerns I had about mom's care prior to this time evaporated. I was truly impressed. While there, the staff showed me nothing but compassion and understanding. In the midst of writing this the mail came. In it was a package from the program manager. She sent me pictures of mom from the past year. Some she had shared with me before and some were new. But they weren't just pictures. They were neatly placed in a handmade felt covered binder. I could go on but I'll stop here. This might sound a little corny, but while I know what I missed not being able to see mom over the past year (due to Covid) I also feel like I missed something special not being able to spend more time getting to know the Brookdale staff. I don't think I can say that about any place else.

All staff were very helpful, concerned, compassionate, caring and responsive with my resident and our family throughout the many years of stay; especially through out all phases of the progression of the disease and end of life in their care.

My sweet mother-in-law lived at Brookdale for over 3 years until she passed away this December 2018. The Brookdale staff was always kind and caring to her and to me. The management team was always available to discuss any worries or concerns I had. They truly loved and cared for my mother-in-law like she was their grandmother. Another plus was the size of the facility. It is smaller and I think folks there get more personalized attention. It was the BEST memory care facility that we ever dealt with.
