Heartbreaking. Stressful. Emotionally wrenching. That’s how I would describe my mother’s recent 4-year stay at Sunrise of Richmond. Newly confined to a wheelchair, my mother was completely dependent on Sunrise staff to use the bathroom, clean her, dress her and take her to meals and activities. Although we encountered a few excellent caregivers during her stay, the vast majority lacked compassion and common sense. It broke my heart. For instance, it was not unusual for Mom to push the call button to go to the bathroom and wait 40 minutes to over an hour for someone to come get her. One person left her on the toilet for over an hour! Some staff members told her they wouldn’t take her. And some even talked back to her. Imagine what it must have been like, after a lifetime of independence, to be so vulnerable -- to have to go to the bathroom, yet no one will come get you. My mother had all her faculties. She knew what was going on. She felt the indignity. My mother was disrespected in other ways, too. Sometimes, after eating, no one would take her to her room. She was left all alone at her table, the only one in the dining room, and no one would look her way. They just abandoned her. It hurt. It really hurt. Other times nursing assistants were too rough when moving her in and out of her wheelchair. She always had large bruises on her arms where they had grabbed her. My mother had given up everything when she moved to Sunrise – her house, her savings and nearly all her belongings. All she had left were her clothes, which she dearly loved. But some nursing assistants just shoved her clothes in the drawers without folding them, leaving them a wrinkled mess. One staff member left an adult diaper (clean) on her dresser and another on her kitchen counter. It was humiliating. It was degrading. Seeing my mother stripped of her dignity like that tore me apart. There were safety concerns, too. When my mother went on oxygen, she used a large oxygen concentrator in her room but needed to switch to a portable tank when she left the bedside. Nursing assistants would switch her to the portable tank, but they often neglected to see if there was any oxygen in it – and oftentimes there wasn’t! Although management told me a nurse was on site every weekend and on-call every night, that was not the case. It was nearly impossible to find a nurse on the weekend. And the one that was there during the week would never follow up with me on important information. When Mom moved in, a registered nurse was on staff. After the RN left, all we got were LPNs. There was constant turnover. Not only with the nursing assistants, but with the nursing, management and executive staffs, as well. They tell you the nursing assistants receive extensive training, but they don’t. Sunrise needs to institute psychological testing before hiring to ensure staff are caring, respectful and can exercise good judgment. Meals were generally institutional and unappetizing. Some items, like beef pot pie, looked like they were straight out of a can. I was constantly advocating on behalf of my mother. I spoke to upper level management several times a week, to no avail. It completely drained me. I was overcome with sadness every time I visited my mother. My mother paid nearly $100,000/year and did not deserve to be treated the way she was. Although, as mentioned, we encountered some excellent nursing assistants over the years, that was the exception. I must also point out that the activities director and maintenance men were wonderful, and the common areas were always clean. But unfortunately these positives can’t make up for all the heartache I experienced over my mother’s care. I put my trust in Sunrise, and I was bitterly disappointed.

My mother-in-law has been here for nearly a year now and it's been such a wonderful spot for her. It's cozy and beautiful and well maintained. The staff, from top to bottom, is so kind a patient and caring, through my MIL's health ups and downs. Activity director Kadie is fantastic and really good about reaching out to encourage MIL to participate, which she needs. All front-line care managers and med techs have been wonderful. (<3 Zahra, Zeriah, Halima, Pabitra, Shreeta, Marry, and many others.) Management (especially Lynn, Mo, and KJ) have been great responding to any questions or needs we've had. Honestly, Sunrise of Richmond has been the miracle my wife and I were praying for. We're forever grateful.

We had to make a sudden decision about my mother's care. We looked at multiple Assisted Living facilities and immediately fell in love with Sunrise of Richmond. Everything from the location, the grounds, living arrangements and staff felt right as soon as we walked in. Lynn and Terri made us feel welcome and took us on a in depth tour. Terri has gone above and beyond to work with us on our very tight timeline. She has kept up informed, answered all of our questions and gave us realistic timelines. We are looking forward to this new chapter in my mother's life.

They provide thoughtful and compassionate care solutions and work to address all unique challenges and concerns that each individuals situation requires.

Update: Dad has returned to the Assisted Living Building. The staff got us in and settled quickly. Feels like coming home. Thank you! Update: Mom passed. The staff was precious. My father hopes to return after a period of mourning and transition with his family. We are on a waiting list, but that's what happens when you give 5 stars to an assisted living facility! Your loved one deserves to be in this special place. Original: Some hiccups with transition of meds. Overall very pleased with memory care. Staff is courteous and polite. Some of the Team members are extraordinarily kind. The food is much better than other facilities and they try to work with dietary needs. Grounds and buildings are very homey and enjoyable. Very accommodating to special requests to enhance my parent's atypical living arrangements. There is something very calming about the atmosphere. It was a difficult decision to make this move, but this was definitely the place to do it. Thank you.

This place is amazing! I have toured dozens of facilities, both for family members and myself, and this consistently tops the list. The food is five-star, the sales staff (Terri) is five star, professional, prepared, and not at all pushy, and the facility and grounds are incredible. I think it's the best of any place in Richmond and highly recommend it. I'm getting on the waiting list myself!

Our mom went into memory care at Sunrise and I can tell you from my 1st hand experience that everything went so good. I love the cottage style environment. The sunrise team is magnificent from Kortney on the lease to Brenda answering the phone and the nursing team is really great including Krystal, Shantaya and every single person. We checked about 20 other facilities and chose the right one. Choose this one with confidence. All of the care was excellent in our stay with Sunrise! The team environment in a cottage setting establishes a different and better culture for this phase of life. Jim

I work through a agency at Sunrise of Richmond .Sunrise of Richmond is a Beautiful Facility from pulling in the parking lot throughout each cottage .When entering the cottages it’s a Very Warm & Welcoming , Cozy feel at Home environment! The Staff is AWSOME ,Very Professional ,Caring and they go above and beyond to take care of the residents and always treating them like family. I’ve been very happy here and impressed with how happy the residents and staff are hope to continue coming to Sunrise of Richmond I would Vote Sunrise of Richmond one of the Best in Richmond!!

Staff appeared friendly. The cottage (memory care) was nice with different life stations (I appreciated that). Residents in the cottage appeared well taken care of. Overall, based on my tour, I would feel good having a family member here.
