The best decision I made was to move into Ida Culver House Broadview! I was skeptical at first to leave my home in a quite neighborhood surrounded by trees to move to the city in an apartment-like setting, but the stairs and isolation were getting to be difficult. After visiting several facilities, I’d chosen ICHB because of the great vibe, lovely apartments, beautiful gardens and fantastic food. Since day one of moving in I’ve been amazed at how wonderful and interesting life can be! There are a wide variety of activities so there’s never a dull moment. There are many choices for great meals in the beautiful dining room with a view of the Olympics. And most importantly the top notch staff are efficient, friendly, caring and eager to serve. The residents are kind, interesting and fun too. This is a very happy place and it’s contagious!

My mother spent four wonderful years at Ida Culver House Broadview. The staff was always available and quick to take care of any need. The buildings and gardens are well maintained, and the terrace garden in particular is a lovely spot. My mom always raved about the food and the sweet staff that served in the dining room. We will miss this warm and loving community.

We moved friends from another state into Ida Culver House Broadview in November 2025, after taking years to thoroughly research many other options. This research gave us a good understanding of what to look for in a retirement facility. This is a complex analysis, and depends entirely on the individuals looking for a community. ICHB received our highest marks on paper. However, it was not until we stayed down the hall as we moved our friends into their sun-filled apartment (with a view of the Olympic range and the Puget Sound!) that we understood what an outstanding community this is. Here are a few of the many positive things we noticed: management is well-organized and welcoming; the (wonderful!) move-in coordinator makes the process understandable and doable; the front desk staff (the central nervous system) is attentive and knowledgeable; the library is beautiful and well-stocked; the housekeeping staff is terrific; the wellness nurses are understanding; the apartments are better than any we saw within the same price range (renting not buying); the food is outstanding -- the chef is dedicated to providing interesting meals with fresh fish almost every day; maintenance is very responsive, and the gardens are lovely. Perhaps most telling was the fact that all residents we met (residing there ourselves as we moved in) had good things to say about the community. From the Executive Director on down, everyone acknowledges the tremendous difficulty of the transition from one's prior life to a retirement community. Walking through the hallways, the residents are greeted by staff (by name), and there is a sense of contentment, of community, of tranquillity, and humor. We met many residents, and all of them had positive things to say. That is the best affirmation of a great place to live. Many thanks to the Broadview team for making this transition work for our friends. It renewed our belief that there is kindness, caring, generosity and humor even during difficult times.

My parents moved there over 5 years ago shortly before the COVID pandemic changed everything. My mother-in-law had moved in a month or two before that. We felt that the staff did a great job of adapting to difficult circumstances and continued to adapt as the pandemic guidance evolved. As my mother's dementia grew worse my parents moved together into the Terrace, the memory care unit. The care there was good. Eventually Mom died due to the dementia and Dad moved back into a regular apartment until eventually he too started struggling with dementia and we moved him back into the Terrace. He died at 100 years old in October. While they lived there I visited often and observed the staff at work. The care was excellent and when there were any rare issues with any individual staff they were dealt with very quickly. The programs and events that we got to experience were amazing. We enjoyed the meals we shared with them in the main dining room. We are very grateful that our parents chose Ida Culver House Broadview and were able to enjoy their final years there.

My folks have been in memory care @ the Terrace for over 4 years and have received excellent care at Ida Culver Broadway House. The staff is loving and caring, the food is very good and varied, and they offer a variety of activities such as music, concerts, sing alongs, and chair exercises.

I have an elderly parent at Ida Culver House Broadview and highly recommend it for senior living or assisted living. The facilities are safe and clean, and the staff are courteous, friendly, attentive, and caring. Other facilities have more of a corporate feel, but Ida Culver House feels very community oriented. The staff plan multiple daily events for residents, know all the residents name, and treat everyone with compassion and respect.

When my mother was ready to move from Florida to Seattle, I did an extensive search for a senior community in the Seattle area. After visiting more than 20 places, it was clear that Ida Culver House Broadview was the best one. My mother has now lived at ICHB for two and a half years, and she really loves it. Ida Culver is an excellent senior community in so many ways. Let me highlight just four of them. 1. Caring and responsive (and award-winning) staff: Every staff person my mother and I have met has been incredibly helpful. They have a genuine passion for what they do and it shows every day. 2. A true community: The residents were very welcoming to my mother. There were orientation sessions with other newcomers and resident volunteers made themselves available to answer questions and introduce my mother to other residents. Despite the broad range of interests and backgrounds, the residents share a genuine friendliness that is obvious if you spend any time there. 3. A lot of activities: There are music performances, game gatherings, book and movie discussions, lectures, monthly birthday parties, outdoor barbecues, cocktail parties, art fairs, exercise sessions, specialty groups, and even an in-house TV channel available to all residents. And these are just the on-premise events. There are also outings all over the greater Seattle area for shopping, nature walks, cultural events, political rallies, and anything else that is of interest to ICBH residents. You don't have to participate in anything, but there is always something interesting going on. 4. Communication: I love getting the weekly menus, the weekly activity calendars, and the bi-weekly newsletters in my email. My mother gets printed copies in her Ida Culver mail slot. Monthly Resident Council meeting minutes are available in the Bistro. There is also an oversize monthly calendar of activities. The activity roster for each day is posted in all elevators, along with the next day’s activity roster. There are also special event posters in the elevators. All big events get a flyer in resident mail slots, well in advance of the event. Other announcements about happenings around the Ida Culver campus are distributed in both email and mail slots. I haven’t mentioned the food (delicious), the facilities (excellent), or the grounds (beautiful). There is a lot to love at Ida Culver and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

I have lived here for almost three years now and remain very positive about it. Why you ask? It has to do with the Staff and the other Residents who live here. The Staff are Great! they always greet you "by Name" when they see you. Ask if you need help with anything. And follow up with what's needed. I have made many new friends and feel comfortable to sit down with other folks when my friends are not available..

In the two years that I have lived at Ida Culver Broadview senior housing I have consistently appreciated both the people and the programs. There is an amazing choice in programs to meet people’s interest. Many are participatory; some like music concerts are for our enjoyment. In every case, the quality is extremely high. Every time I meet new people here I think how fortunate I am to live in the Ida Culver community because the people are consistently interesting, pleasant and kind. The staff sets a tone of positive interactions, which seems to permeate both business and recreational activities. When friends come to visit, they immediately comment on the positive tone they feel. Aging has its challenges for sure, but living in a quality community makes all the difference in the world!

I chose to come to Ida Culver House after having put a deposit here while living in Las Vegas. I am very happy with my decision to come here as I have been very happy living here the reasoning being the people, the staff, the food, they have here including the wonderful library they have available to residents here as well as many learning programs and many musical talented individual musicians who come here to perform! I think I am in the best place available in the Northwest and I wouldn’t change a thing!

When we were looking for independent/assisted living for my mom, we toured 14 different communities from Issaquah to Everett, back down to South Seattle and all the points in between. (Let me stop briefly here to give a shout out to all of the ERA communities multiple ones made our top picks list.) While we discovered many excellent places, the one that really stood out as right for mom and right for us was Ida Culver House Broadview. The location is exceptionally convenient. The rooms are lovely, some with views all the way down to the water. The grounds are beautiful, and really something special in spring and fall. Parking is good, both for residents and visitors. The services offered are comprehensive. We ate at the dining room with mom many nights; we always enjoyed the food, and the servers were wonderful. Every one of the staff that we interacted with at Ida Culver were fantastic, top-tier, kind, knowledgeable and helpful, and helped us through an incredibly tough year. One of the major points we considered when picking Ida Culver was their scope of care. While we initially went into this with the intent of mom being able to enjoy all the incredible amenities that the main campus’s independent and assisted living had to offer, we knew her condition would likely necessitate a move to memory care or more. What hadn’t been clear before the move though was how far her condition had actually progressed, and how rapidly it would continue to do so. It became clear very quickly that mom already needed memory care, and just 9 or 10 months beyond that her condition eventually outstripped even the scope of memory care. Though mom has had to move again, this is where I really want to express my gratitude to the entirety of the staff at Ida Culver. This past year has been horrifically stressful, and so, so very much of this has been entirely new and alien to me. Mom’s condition deteriorated fast enough that we’ve never really seemed to get much of a moment to breathe, let alone get properly settled. And during all of these stressful, scary transitions, all the folks at Ida Culver have been so incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. At each step, they’ve worked with us, talked with us, answered our questions, and connected us with incredible resources and amazing people that we would have never been able to find on our own. It would have been ideal if mom could have gotten to enjoy more of well, everything. But having such a caring team backing us up, helping us figure out the next step, and continuing to answer questions even after we’ve moved has been such an incredible thing, truly a blessing.

My father and some friends are currently living at the IDA Culver House, Broadview in Seattle. I have had dinner with them a number of times. Every time I visit the Ida Culver house, I am just so impressed with the quality of the staff. One of the places where the staff has an opportunity to really shine is in the dining room. Every time I am there, I am just so impressed with how the staff handles their roles, how kind and engaging they are with the residents. At the end of pretty much every meal, "someone" seems to always mentions how great the staff is.

My father lived in the Terrace community for over two years. He had memory issues as well as physical needs and staff patiently and kindly supported him on both fronts. He especially enjoyed the wonderful parties and celebrations, music, games, dog visits, gardens, and the very personal warmth that many staff shared in both caring for him and conversing with him. His own special gifts of singing and light-heartedness were appreciated and encouraged and we were fortunate that he was able to stay there until he passed at 100, cared for till the end by very loving RAs and nurses of the Terrace as well as Hospice and family. We will always be grateful for this kind place for the last years of our father's life.

I moved my two parents, aged 83 and 87, into Ida Culver in early December 2023, after putting them on the wait list in May. My initial tour of Ida Culver with Pam Perry was one of my first interactions with staff at any facility, and she remains my gold standard for helping navigate this complex emotional, logistical, and financial process. From the jump she provided clear communication, incredible patience, helpful perspective, timely follow-up, and accurate expectation-setting about how long the process would take. My subsequent experience with the rest of the staff at Ida Culver, from the front desk, to the Resident Assistants, to the Assisted Living nurses, to the social worker Leah, has been similar. This is a special place, staffed by people who genuinely care about what they do and the people that live there. Furthermore, the community of residents itself is amazing. My wife knew several current & former residents & their family through her church, and all of them noted this same thing - that the residents showed genuine care for each other. This was how Ida Culver initially rose to our short list of places to consider, and it has borne out from the moment my parents took their first tour, through their first 2 weeks of their living there. When we pulled into the parking garage on moving day, we happened to run into the resident who had been assigned to be my parents' "resident guide". She said "are you Ray & Carolyn?" and proceeded to give them the warmest, most patient welcome. Throughout the day, most people we encountered knew who my parents were and all of them welcomed them with open arms. My father cried repeatedly for happiness at the people that day. One week after the move, my mother had a stroke and spent 3 days in Swedish Cherry Hill, making an already complex and stressful time even more so - especially because my dad, who has some dementia, was experiencing significant confusion and it wasn't clear whether he could be on his own. The nurses, Pam, and many others on the staff were on it, helping organize concrete support for my dad, coordinate care for my mom when she returned from the hospital, and keeping staff informed. I was repeatedly impressed how well informed the staff were about my parents' situation, and again, the care they showed making sure that not only they were OK, but that I was too. Ida Culver has two other standout attributes: it has a very low entry fee ($7500), versus many places in the city that charge hundreds of thousands of dollars to enter, and it does not require residents to move in order to change from "independent living" to "assisted living" (AL). AL is just a higher level of services which you can add as needed. Given the immense effort involved in the move, this is a huge benefit, and one we're already taking advantage of 2 weeks in, to tailor the services for my parents to their needs. Ida Culver is not perfect. Alongside all the experiences I list above, there have been moments when I've been frustrated by the amount of paperwork, the need for me to help coordinate across the staff, the difficulty of truly getting oriented to all of Ida Culver's services both for my parents and for me. However, much of this is attributable to it being staffed by humans :), and to the unusually stressful circumstances of our move, including the long distance, my parents' lack of preparation, and my mom's stroke. The five-star review feels deeply earned to me on balance, because perfection is not possible in this phase of life. The essence of it is dealing with unexpected and sometimes frightening events, and the most important ingredients for responding to those are empathy, patience, and experience, and Ida Culver shows all of these in spades. (PS all of this is without even getting into the food & the dining room, which are legitimately awesome... I eat there *happily* every time I visit my parents, and they feel the same way.)

What attracted me to Ida Culver Broadview House: Beautiful grounds/landscaping; green lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and a courtyard with an abundance of spectacular flora and view of Olympics. 2. An apartment that offers view of tree tops, frequent birds, passing planes and gorgeous sunsets from my living room window. From my veranda I see the Olympic Mountains. The door to the stairway leading directly to my room is approached through the pea patch. I enjoy the diversity of colorful flowers throughout much of the year on frequent trips in and out of my building. Attraction discovered after moving in: 1. An outstanding staff that is friendly, accommodating, focused on maximizing residents’ comfort and enjoyment. I particularly enjoy kibitzing with the wholesome student dining room staff. 2. Life Enrichment offers a diverse and interesting selection of exercise classes, visiting lecturers and entertainers, talks by health care providers and in-house activities such as bingo and play reading. We have a resident Council that acts as a mediator with management. 3. Most summer days I get a strong cooling breeze that I circulate through my apartment, obviating the need of my air conditioner except on the hottest days. The neighborhood offers quiet streets with attractive homes for my bike riding and walks.

My Mom was diagnosed with mild vascular dementia several years ago. For years she was able to live completely independently, but with time, her disease progressed to the point where we decided that she would do better in a supportive community. But where to move her? The choices seemed overwhelming. Over the years I've had experiences with a wide range of retirement communities, rehabilitation facilities, nursing homes, etc. involving family and friends, so I'd seen both the best and others I wouldn't wish on anyone. This experience was really helpful, because when Mom could no longer live on her own, I already had an idea about what I wanted for her. We ultimately selected IDA CULVER HOUSE BROADVIEW for its reputation, range of services, location, gorgeous campus, and most importantly, its memory care unit. We couldn't be happier. Here's why I chose them. First, I spoke to a lot of professionals in the field, friends, and colleagues when the (somewhat frantic) search began and was surprised how many had parents or knew friends' parents who lived at ICHB and they all raved about it. That was a great first sign. Second, it's locally owned and operated and is not part of a national franchise, so it feels less corporate and more home-y than other facilities with a wonderful focus on the residents. At the same time, it's an expansive 8-acre campus with a range of living options and is beautifully manicured with gorgeous trees, flowers, paths, both indoor and outdoor seating areas, a beautiful second floor library with big picture windows, and a dining room with beautiful views of the water and mountains. Third, high staff turnover in this business is pretty common. So I was pleasantly surprised to learn how many staff members have been with ICHB for 10 or 20 years or longer. It's a testament to how the company treats its staff. Personally, it's important that the folks who are looking after my Mom like what they do, care about the residents, and that the relationships she builds will be lasting. This is especially important for those with memory problems. I've spent quite a bit of time interacting with staff over the past five or six months and continue to be impressed by how caring, helpful, and personally invested they all are. Fourth, ICHB is a great choice if you have a parent who wants to find a place to retire and age in place. Three options are available: 100% independent living in studios, one-bedroom or two-bedroom apartments; independent living with assisted living services added as needs increase; and memory care. The last thing I wanted for my Mom was to move her into a place only to have to move her elsewhere for memory care when the time came; I wanted more certainty and stability for her. ICHB was a great fit for this reason. When my Mom first moved in, she had a gorgeous, brightly lit studio apartment with a view of Puget Sound and the Olympics with trees right outside her window. Everything was new and clean. It was amazing! There were lots of planned activities, classes, social events, and options for staying busy, making friends, and pursuing hobbies (I receive regular courtesy emails with lists of planned and upcoming offerings). Given her needs at the time, we arranged for her to have assisted living services to provide her the extra help she needed. When her dementia progressed, the Nurse Director helped us transition her into ICHB's memory care unit, called the Terrace. The staff in the Terrace is experienced with Alzheimer's and dementia and know how to provide specialized support to the residents. Her days are filled with activities and she seems happier than ever. I recognize this has been a really long review (hopefully it won't be a tl;dr kind of thing) but I wanted to share this in the event it might be helpful to others who are where I was when our journey began. The thing that has made the most difference to me is the peace of mind I now have knowing that Mom is being well taken care of, is happy, and that if either she or I ever need anything, the staff at ICHB is there for us.

At the same time, it’s an expansive 8-acre campus with a range of living options and is beautifully manicured with gorgeous trees, flowers, paths, both indoor and outdoor seating areas, a beautiful second floor library with big picture windows, and a dining room with beautiful views of the water and mountains.
