I am torn about giving this rating because in all honesty, we are THRILLED with our mothers apartment and care from the staff. We literally have ZERO complaints about the amazing workers and the lovely facility. But if I could give the CEO/higher ups who profit from this place zero stars I would. In the 3 years we have had our mother and late father there, the prices (already ASTRONOMICAL) have continued to rise again and again, and AGAIN. This last rate hike was the THIRD in six months!! We have literally watched as many residents have been left with no other choice but to MOVE, because they can no longer afford the price hikes. It is only a matter of time before we are in the same position.....imagine the absolute sadness and nightmare of having to move an elderly parent in poor health to another facility after they have become comfortable in their "home"!! We see many of the apartments now sit empty because people can't afford them and it makes no sense!! Isn't it better to keep the prices where they were and be at full capacity than have apartments sit empty month after month? And please don't tell me the 'cost of care ' has gone up--- I've seen in job listing what they are paying their workers and it's shameful. The only explanation left is pure greed. Full stop. I only wish I knew how to get this message to the people who are profiting off this. My prayer is that they never have to make the choice of figuring out what to do with THEIR 89 year old parents when the $ runs out-- but of course, that won't be a problem for them, will it? A huge thank you to the amazing staff. A huge something else to the CEO of the Commons. Not sure how you sleep at night. ’”

We moved my dad in several months ago. Trust me - the photos on their website DO NOT by any means reflect what the place is really like. They must be taken from a four-star resort or restaurant. Grilled steak with asparagus like that? Never happens. The food is mediocre at best. The activities are the same - every day, every month. So unless you play dominoes or bingo - not much else happening on a daily basis. Yes, they have occasional excursions - like drives around town which is better than nothing. The caregivers are hard to find. The whole place seems to be suffering a severe shortage of staff, no organization and few, if any, signs of improvement in the overall quality of care and life. I have heard rumors they are going bankrupt. Don't know if that is true - but would explain the downturn.

It is unfortunate that most of the 1 star ratings on here are of personal reasons/beliefs and do not reflect the quality of care, life and facility. Please take those reviews as what they are, personal, and not a reflection of the actual facility, employees, management and care provided. My loved one has lived in the facility for over a year and it has been fantastic for her. Without having her name badge on, the caregivers know her by name and are genuine in their concern and interactions with her. I've seen the same interactions between the staff and other residents. The facility is very well taken care of, bright, easy to access and inviting to all. The food is good to excellent. I feel comfortable and at ease that my loved one is living at The Commons. Her quality of life has greatly improved since moving in. I enjoy visiting her, she loves to have people come and visit her and dine with her. I have not had a negative interaction with any of the staff and I believe if I had management would address the issue. Update late 2024: My loved one was placed in hospice and eventually passed. While moving items out of the apartment before she passed many of the staff and residents stopped by to ask how she was doing. They shared stories and best wishes. Grateful for the time she spent here.

Rating a 3 due to the care from management and directors. The commons is an assisted living community only. From what I have experienced and seen they do very well on that side. If your family member is in need of memory care, please don’t subject them to that part of the commons. It is a locked unit with a small amount of help. The employees seem like they want to do a good job and care, but lack the support and staffing needed for that kind of care. The locked unit is not staffed for the needs of those residents and that’s not fair to them or the employees. I don’t have experience with the commons in the assisted living side and cannot comment on that side, but from the outside looking in on that there is more help and care. I am only reviewing the memory care experience.

I don't live here, I visit from time to time. It is very very clean. Great atmosphere. And oh my goodness the food is phenomenal. The fries ,are the best I have ever had in my life. I could only be so lucky to live here when the time comes. Everyone I came into contact with, was so nice, seemed to love their job. I guess looking at it it wasn't a job for them at all. They was just smiling, laughing like they was having fun. Great atmosphere from my prospective. Beautiful scenery as well. Flowers are very well taken care of . So very beautiful

Sometimes you have to share how amazing a team of people can be, when it comes to taking care of your most important things..your loved ones. My father-in-law is struggling with Alzheimer's and we are so grateful to have the most amazing group of people and facility to help us through this path life has taken us. We have moved him through multiple facilities in the Grand Valley and The Commons outshines everyone of them. They are willing to help in any way they can. Thank you all for what you do every day and I would recommend The Commons to every family who has a family member who needs a place to live.

My mother and father came to The Commons around 2016. My dad passed away in 2017. My mom is still there at the great age now of 101. The staff has been everything we could have hoped for. There are 4 children and we all live in different parts of the country. The team at the commons is compassionate, caring and patient. If you are trying to make a decision my bet is with this group to do a good job for you and your family. K Kohl.

My experience with The Commons goes back to 2013. First Mom became a resident, then Dad joined her there, and now it's just Dad since Mom's passing. The care that the residents receive is nothing short of amazing. The staff treats all of the residents with tremendous love, respect and compassion...it's more like a family than anything else. The entire staff is always very helpful when you have problems or questions with your loved one. They work very hard and I appreciate everything that they do. The facility is always kept clean and well maintained, inside and out. The vans used to transport the residents are kept in good running order, and the drivers keep their passengers safe and secure. During COVID19, management set up some very strict protocols which have kept the residents much safer and healthier than the general population. The food in the Dining Room can be a little hit and miss at times, but in general it is good. Dad complains that "they serve too many green vegetables", which just proves that some kids never do grow up. In general, I would say that if you are looking for a place where your loved one will be well taken care of, and where the staff really does have their best interest at heart, then you need to make a visit to The Commons.

Out of 5 stars we would rate aspects as follows: Sense of Community 5; Responsiveness and Knowledge of Caregivers 4; Food Quality 3; Maintenance of facility 5; Compassion and overall helpfulness of staff and administration is stellar at 5+.

Our mother ended up at the Commons for final rehab from a fall at home, only for her and the family to realize that it was no longer wise for her to live on her own at age 94. The excellent care she was getting and the welcoming, friendly lifestyle here made it a clear choice. Being a very sociable person, she quickly made friends and enjoyed a variety of activities provided for residents. After a year in assisted living, it was apparent that she was in need of some extra attention and specialized care that the memory care wing, Hope Harbor, could provide. Although she initially resisted the move, it turned into the best thing for her. The staff at Hope Harbor was very attentive and patient with her needs and requests and Mom (and we, her family) set a high standard. They were also excellent at communicating with our family about her physical and mental condition, and assisted us in establishing regular visits from family and friends, be they in person or electronically. The facility is nicely decorated and always neat and clean. The staff is friendly and helpful. The food options are many, giving residents choices at every meal for multiple menu items. We can highly recommend the Commons at Hilltop and its Hope Harbor wing to prospective residents and families searching for top notch assisted living.

Making a tough choice is not easy. However, if you have to choose - look at the Commons. While no place is perfect, you will find that the majority of the staff really cares at the Commons. BTW, when you are having to make tough decisions for your loved one, please understand that NO ONE else knows exactly what you are dealing with. We could sleep at night knowing that if Mom was confused about what time it was, there would be staff there who would redirect her. If she went for a walk, there was someone that would be able to help her if she became disorientated and needed help.

The Commons is wonderful building, furnished and maintained beautifully and with a top level restaurant dining experience. However, the staff with their compassion and concern for the residents far outshines the physical beauty of the Commons It is their presence -physical and spiritual-that creates a caring and healing environment- an environment that I had the opportunity to experience for six months last year.
