I recently had my 90 yr old cousin living at the assisted living facility in Valley Park. It is a nice-looking building .... but word to the wise don't be fooled by that, they all look fancy with the nicely furnished common areas and the updated units. I had one incident where i came to visit my cousin one evening and they had just put her down for the night in her lift chair that can recline, she had a bed nearby. but that is not the real issue. I saw that she was sweating and looked really bad...i went to the nurse and asked that they check on her because i knew something was wrong as even her voice didn't sound like her. ..two hours later the nurse calls me and tells me they sent her to emergency room at Mercy hospital. I live nearby and got there as fast as I could. I sat with my cousin for several hours while they performed tests on her. They determined she had a really bad UTI and was sent to ICU. For a while they thought the UTI had gotten into her bloodstream and was turning into sepsis. You know that usually killed folks. I cringe when I think that if I hadn't shown up earlier in the evening her condition would have been ignored. When my cousin got out of the hospital and back at Cape Albeon....a week later I received a call from one of the therapists sent by the Hosp for therapy. The therapist told me that she did not feel they were taking very good care of my cousin and there was no stimulation for her going on in that place. She also wanted me to know that there was crackling in my cousins lungs and that I should ask the nurse to order an Xray to make sure it is not turning into pneumonia. She wanted to alert me to look into this. I thought she must feel quite strongly to have made a special call to me in regard to this matter. I went to the nurse the same day and politely asked if they could do an Xray on my cousins' lungs. Nurse said she will have to get ok from the facilities doctor. Although the nurse did not say anything inappropriate, I felt an attitude.... each time I talked to nursing which wasn't much ,..abouat 3x i felt an attitude and would not be surprised if the rolled their eyes to whomever was in the office with them. It was not like I bothered them a lot. The place turns on the alarms at 9:00 pm and the front desk person leaves...so if your still there and try to leave the alarms go off. This happened to me and my spouse ...on easter. We had taken her out to eat and brought her back.... We visited with her and didn't realize it was after a few minutes after 9:00pm The blaring alarm started but nobody ever came...finally a man brought his mother back.. came in and we used that opportunity to leave once the door on his end was opened...I thought that an alarm going off and nobody coming to see what it was about was rather scary. . Another recent time...I was walking with my cousin from the dining room to her apt... we saw a resident crumpled on the floor in a red dress in the front common area near the front entrance. I alerted the people in the front desk area, and they called for an ambulance. I decided it was time to move my cousin somewhere else. You have to give 30 days' notice which I did...there was some problem at the new place she was going to so she might need an extra day at Cape. The senior service agency I work with called up on our behalf and asked if there was a way my cousin could stay an extra day or two. She was told yes no problem. I received a phone call the next day from a nurse telling me they had a meeting and cousin had to be out on her scheduled departure date as the unit has been rented,,,and that my cousin required too much care for them and in a year will require skilled care. It was not only a weird phone call but seemed vindictive. We paid rent here for well over a year. We paid $5985.00 a month... which is joke in itself for most nursing homes these days for as little they actually do for their residents...and after all that money was paid.... they wanted to be vindictive because we wanted to leave. We never made any complaints while there or after giving notice, I don't know where the need to call me came from. All I know is that perhaps. if they feel the need to be vindictive with a departing resident to the decision-making person upon leaving or that when you speak to the nurse, she gives you attitude when they didn't do their job to begin with ...which is why my cousin wound up in ICU.and nearly died. Perhaps they are not appropriate to take care of our senior citizens and be in that particular type of business. On a positive note, the food is really good there and the dining room staff is very kind, Just don't be fooled by the fancy building in this place or others and the super nice salesperson....it is a totally different scene once they have your relative there and you're not around. Visit often and different times.... but don't totally trust them. You have been warned...so....Good luck you will need it.

Two months ago, we moved my dad into Cape Albeon. He had been home alone for nearly 2 years because of Covid so he was pretty lonely and not eating much. Since he's been there, he has many new friends, participates in activities and has gained some much needed weight due to their great food. It's the best thing that's happened to him in years! We are pleased with the staff and his apartment is lovely. He's 93 and has started a new chapter in his life!!!

A word to the wise - If you have a family member in poor health going through cancer treatments, go straight for assisted living instead of independent. My Mom was still ambulatory and independent after 2 years of treatment so we opted for independent living. Once her condition started deteriorating a year later (several falls at home which independent living can do nothing about except call EMS) we tried to get her moved to assisted living and they refused us. We ended up paying their private duty contractor 3 times as much to have 24/7 care in independent living until she passed away. It’s a lovely community you just need to be realistic about the future needs of your loved one.

Its like a big happy family
January 2019
I have now lived at Cape Albeon for 6 weeks. Many of my friends have come to visit and almost without exception, they comment how relaxed and happy I look. That is because I AM. I am surrounded by trees and lakes and employees and residents (all of which and of whom are helpful, interesting and entertaining on many levels). The smaller population of Cape Albeon feels more like a family than just a group of people living in similar spaces. We have enough activities and outings to entertain us without being overwhelmed. Our primary dining room is lovely and our food is good, offering a good variety of choices. We are neither overfed or underfed. The cost of living in this lovely community is reasonable . I chose to get involved quickly so I could meet people and enjoy life. IT IS WORKING!!

My parents moved here in the fall. This is the place you HOPE exists. The community is friendly, the staff--I can't really call them staff--they feel more like family. I know I'm supposed to say that, but these people are top notch. It's the most important part of a community like this. The difference is how much they care. They are attentive, available, interested, and prompt. I couldn't be more thrilled.

I have really enjoyed working for Cape Albeon Lakeside Retirement Living the past two years! Not only because of the many relationships I have gained with the employees, but most importantly the friendships with the residents and their families. I walk to our retirement apartments from our assisted living building every chance I get, it feels as if I am in a movie! The hidden oasis feel is breathtaking. I have and will continue to recommend Cape Albeon!!

I recently had arthroscopic knee surgery and was not able to take care of myself at home alone afterward. I availed myself of Cape Albeon's free week of respite care. The room was very comfortable and quiet. The nursing help was friendly and attentive, even at 11PM. Until I was able to get around and get to the dining room my meals were delivered and were quite good. The decor is beautiful and the center courtyard is quite lovely and tranquil. I didn't participate in many activities but there was plenty to do if I wished; Bingo, live entertainment, exercises, trips out for shopping etc. There is even a beauty/barber shop on site. The employees and residents were so open and friendly I wished I needed to stay longer. I could easily get used to this life.

My husband recently spent 7 free respite days at Cape Albeon. He was very well taken care of and I had the peace of mind knowing that he was in a great place. Everyone was so caring and friendly and it is a beautiful place. I am very thankful for everyone there.

My husband and I moved into our cottage 11 years ago. Cape Albeon has very pleasant surroundings, our cottage has a wonderful lake view. I like to sit outside and watch the birds, etc. My husband would ask when it was time to go home, as if we were on vacation. Maintenance, housekeeping, meals, trips and activities are wonderful. The empolyees are all very accommodating and respond to requests within 24 hours. The upkeep is tremendous from the exterior to the interior. On a few occasions I unfortunately found it necessary to need extra care. I was able to use the free annual respite stay at the assisted living following a hospital stay. It was very helpful to myself and my family who lives out of town, it put their mind at peace.

This facility is exceptional! The staff were all so pleasant and very easy to deal with. They did an amazing job at making my family and our loved one comfortable with the transition into the free week of respite care. The cleanliness, schedule of activities and the detailed care provided was far more than we expected, especially at no-cost.

What's not to like? Cape Albeon has been my home for almost two years. I have found it to be a very comfortable place to live. The Cape is clean and inviting. The residents are friendly and sociable and I have made many new friends. I take great pleasure in having my family visit me here. We often share a meal in the dining room where the food is outstanding and the service is great! The grounds at Cape are beautifully maintained and the views are lovely in every season. The open space and lakes are delightful additions to the beauty of the property. I am pleased to call this place my home.

I am very fortunate to be here in the Village, Assisted Living of Cape Albeon. It's a nice Christian home with church services every week. The employees are all outstanding, very caring and loving. It is very well maintained and they keep the apartments all nice and clean. There are always activities to join in on, if you choose. The dining room is very inviting and the tables always have fresh flowers and is very clean. The food is outstanding and well prepared, served attractive and always a good selection.
April 2018
I call bingo at this lovely community. The residents I talk to say they love it there. They say it's clean, the food is great , the Happy Hours and entertainment are so much fun. The grounds and lakes make this place a resort. No-one feels lonely living at Cape Albeon. My brother came in from Florida to stay during Hurricane Irma and was so impressed with the accommodations. Its surely located in a great area too, close to highways and plenty of shopping and restaurant's. I look forward to living at Cape Albeon someday. The Cottages are so cute. The friendly staff and happy residents make it feel like a home away from home. What's not to like about this hidden gem in southwest St Louis county.

The assisted living is fantastic! The food is tasty with lots of variety. I would recommend anyone with parents to move to Cape Albeon GC
