Reviews Sunrise of Arlington

My mother lived at Sunrise of Arlington for four years—initially in Independent Living, then in Memory Care as her care needs increased. Throughout her time there, Mom was always safe, well-fed, and it was clear the staff had her best interests in mind. We first learned of Sunrise because my then-teenage sons performed there occasionally with their chamber music group. Sunrise frequently brings in outside entertainment, hosting performances for residents, sometimes during holiday banquets and sometimes just for a pleasant afternoon gathering. When Mom moved in, she was able to bring her two cats and a digital piano, which Sunrise welcomed completely. Although she eventually could no longer take care of the cats (we found them a nice new home), her piano playing remained a vital connection for her. Sunrise has three pianos in common areas, and the staff often encouraged Mom to play for the other residents. They were always finding ways to increase residents' enjoyment and engagement. My interactions with Sunrise were consistently positive. The staff were welcoming during my visits and responsive to any questions about care, billing, etc. Even when once we had a complicated situation between Sunrise, Mom's insurance, and me, everything turned out well. Additionally, the nursing staff carefully monitored Mom's health and proactively communicated any concerns that needed attention, which gave me tremendous peace of mind.

My friends and relatives want to know "What's it like living at Sunrise?". Cab drivers and other casual acquaintances ask "What's that Sunrise place like?". I am a resident at Sunrise of Arlington MA and I can tell you it's like living in an individual apartment of a condominium complex. Support staff members, from the person who cleans the floor to the executive director, make everything work in the community and feel more like extended family members than employees who punch a time clock. Each resident's day is filled with voluntary activities. The following are some examples. Daily we have a chair exercise session to promote muscle tone, full range of motion, and good circulation. Several times a week we exercise to music; other days we use stretch bands, foam noodles, or one to three pound weights. Opportunities for meditation and for religious devotion are available during the week. Monthly, a local Roman Catholic parish priest serves communion to interested residents. Once a month, in-house nurses collect residents' vital statistics to compile individual benchmarks and to ensure the overall health of the community. Periodically, physical therapy and wellness staff offer lectures and discussions on timely health subjects. Past examples included: Hearing Health, Does the Shoe Fit?, and Nutrition Tips. Residents take weekly excursions on the Sunrise Van. Destinations include shopping centers, favorite restaurants, local parks, and other scenic spots. Yes, we do get out of the Sunrise facility! Several times a month, local musicians provide concerts of classical, jazz, and contemporary musical offerings. And the Boston area is burgeoning with interesting and talented musicians. Other voluntary group activities include educational topics from the Great Courses, choral singing, viewing travelogues of domestic and foreign locations, arts and crafts including sketching and painting, and early evening viewings and weekend matinees of classic and contemporary movies. And now on to food. We eat meals in small groups in the dining room. Support staff members ensure that all residents come to meals. If a resident is not feeling well, that resident may receive meals in his or her room until that resident is well. Otherwise, all residents eat in the dining room because communal dining is an important social activity. Also, I mention food because everyone wants to know if the food is good, whether the food under discussion if from the local high school cafeteria, a friend's home, a new restaurant, or Sunrise. The food at Sunrise is fresh and tasty. Breakfast is made to residents' orders whether the meal consists of tea and toast, cold or hot cereal, fresh fruit and yogurt, just coffee, eggs and bacon, or all of the above. And there are daily specials such as Monday's muffins or Wednesday's waffles. Lunch and dinner begin with appetizer salad and soup. The salads are made fresh daily and most soup is prepared from scratch in-house. Several hot entrees are on offer daily or a resident can choose from a variety of sandwiches on a choice of breads, or hot dogs, beef burgers, or veggie burgers. Typical entrees run from barbecued chicken with vegetables and mac and cheese, fish and chips with cole-slaw, beef and broccoli stir fry with rice, and London broil with baked potato and green beans. Fruit with cottage cheese is available also. Desserts including ice cream are offered with both lunch and dinner. Hot and cold beverages are provided. In the summer months, we have weekly barbecues in the backyard. Yes, we have beautiful grounds where residents can walk or sit and relax. All enjoy the seasonal flowers and birds and just being in the out-of-doors. That was my brief description of what it's like at Sunrise. I participate in most of the activities I mentioned and I like it here. Stop by one of our locations and take a tour of that community's facility. We would be glad to meet you and show you around.

My sister just completed two months of respite care at Sunrise and my family and I were extremely pleased with the care she received. My own personal experience in visiting my sister at Sunrise is that the staff were all so helpful and willing to help my sister with anything she needed. They are a very friendly group and special thanks to Jenafer, Lynne, Karen and the chef (I'm not sure of his name, but a great guy with a we aim to please attitude). More importantly, thank you for the kindness extended to my sister during her stay. Nobody desires to be away from home under these circumstances, but my sister herself said that the time flew by, which is a very good sign of the care she received. Sunrise is a very cheerful looking place which really helps with mental attitude. So, thank you to all!

I am Vincenzo's Son-in-Law…I am not normally one to espouse the good, bad or indifferent, in public forums, still, I'd like to briefly describe my experience with moving my in-laws (Mother, Father, and Aunt) to an Adult Assisted Living Community (AALC) thus far - About me; while I am certainly ready for most that comes at me and well, equipped with an unmistakable New York City attitude with a personal moniker of 'not too much surprises me', easy is fast-becoming the name of the game. After many visits to several AALC's that included a wellness/nursing staff and a secure memory care program, my wife and I decided to entrust the help, care and expertise of Mr. Paul Coco and his staff at Sunrise Assisted Living, in Arlington, MA. Sunrise, not surprisingly appears on the facade, as most would expect in a private AALC; bright, sunny, almost hotel-like, but with a community feel. While location, and costs were some of our major concerns, other ingredients we were looking for like meals, activities and staffing and in-house medical care were also important. It has been a little over a year now, and I feel as comfortable as ever at Sunrise. Mr. Coco and his staff, while I am certain have their hands full with the daily challenges of running a community of aging residents have made me and my family part of their family. The wellness/ nursing staff headed by "Watertown", we'll call her, continues to exceed and amaze in their profession; care, attention and compassion for my family. The dining staff always seems to have their hands full at mealtimes - oh boy - always makes sure everyone is well attended to with the ever-important task of providing palatable, restaurant-like meals and service. Maintenance and everyday facility accommodations are attentive and seamless and run with the smoothness of an oil-less compressor, seriously. Billing and supporting management is always at the ready for questions and service requests, along with financial and individual wellness updates as well as community activity information which is relayed to us on a regular basis. With the passing of my Father-in-Law, I am heartened with the coming and goings of residents. My solace is knowing that his time along with the other former residents at Sunrise was as pure as the sun with happiness and dignity…and a full stomach! Now, in closing; I have to say that it is almost as if I need to pinch myself every time we visit. Last but certainly not least; the reception staff is always, always warm and welcoming. And, with the occasionally-inevitable hiccups along the way not withstanding, having to move and entrust the wellbeing of your family with a new and unfamiliar environment full of strangers is not easy, for anyone, I am sure - something Mr. Coco certainly understands how to allay with the utmost graciousness."

My brother has been in respite at Sunrise of Arlington for a few weeks. His studio is spacious and convenient, the bathroom was designed with safety in mind. I can't praise the staff enough: in particular Shah and Jennafer have been involved way above the call of duty. I get phone calls and messages telling me how he's getting on, which I very much appreciate. In general, the facility is bright , clean, and cheerful, with an enclosed garden out back that provides lovely plantings. The dietary staff aims to please--they will, with a little notice, cook up a favorite dish. And in general, the food is quite good--I was pleasantly surprised-really didn't seem like institutional cooking. The menus are varied, and there are numerous options. The residents seem to be a mixture of people who are mostly independent, and there are quite a few men, which was not the case with other facilities we visited. In all, I thought Sunrise definitely deserved its 5 stars!

I love this place for its location, wonderful caring staff and the welcoming nature. Shah has been a wonderful help in transitioning Mom to Assisted Living.

My grandfather spent a few months at Sunrise and our family was incredibly disappointed with the service he received. The staff would refuse to get him up in the morning or put him to bed. One evening my husband and I drove from over an hour away to put my 94 year old grandfather in bed because they claimed they did not have enough staff. There were a few staff members who even shared with our family that other staff purposely wouldn't help him. We are thankful for the staff who got him to the hospital at the end when he was sick.

We were so pleased with the reception our family member received when he came to Sunrise of Arlington. Everyone, especially Jen and Shah, was extremely welcoming and helpful. In fact, Shah went out of his way to contact us with an update on his progress.

The atmosphere at Sunrise is warm and inviting. Common areas are spacious and the apartments are pleasing. The grounds and especially the back garden are lovely. The staff is respectful but caring too, and always helpful. They have done as much as possible to deal with the limitations of covid. I am looking forward to more activities returning. The first time I walked into Sunrise I knew it was the place for my mom.

Sunrise saved my aunt’s life by having daily structure or routines. She has been there almost a year after Trasfered her there from a nursing home who put her on hospice while recovering from a broken hip.

In the midst of pandemic, Sunrise of Arlington, was incredible in providing an amazing service and making the transition for my father, who was in a serious accident, very simple. Great place, offers flexibility and support, with great staff who were very helpful throughout his stay. I definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for short-term or long-term residence.

My Mom has been a resident in the memory unit at Sunrise Arlington for 5 years. My family has been extremely happy with the care she has received over this period of time. The staff is wonderful! The caregivers address the day to day needs so Mom is always well groomed, comfortable and content. The activities staff brings joy and vibrancy to the daily life of the residents. The Director is always available to families and staff, and is able to make things happen. My family is lucky to have the Sunrise Team as part of our extended family.
April 2020
My mom was at Sunrise for 10 years, until she was a few weeks away from 90 years old. Toward the end of her stay, she needed more help that Sunrise could provide, but that was because of her age and cognitive status, not Sunrise. She is now in a nursing home. Overall, Sunrise was great for mom. She made good friends and as long as she was able, took advantage of outings and activities. She especially liked the musical events. The space, indoors and out, is comfortable and welcoming. The management does its best to involve residents in activities. She was the subject of a local school project pairing residents with grade schoolers who wrote about their lives. Until she was no longer able, she participated in things like arranging the flowers on dining tables, and chair exercise classes, to name just a few things. She loved the food, too! I do not live in the US and was managing her care from afar. I am grateful to the staff, especially the direct caregivers, who treated her like their own mothers. They kept a good eye on her, and took care of some of her personal needs as her ability to do certain daily tasks declined. Staff was always quick to contact me if an issue arose. Given the number of residents, I was impressed with her personal care. It wasnt the same as having her at home, of course, but I did not have to worry about her and she was happy and respected. We were both sad to say goodbye to Sunrise.

I gave this facility a 5 star rating for its ability provide care from assisted living through end of life care with the appropriate resources, cleanliness, hotel like feel, and friendly staff. They also offer many activities for seniors, which is important to keep them busy and engaged.
July 2019
The Sunrise of Arlington deserves a 5-Star rating based on the many daily activities run by wonderful staff; common examples include the Exercise classes. Kindness is also shown by so many staff members including Sunrise bus ride adventures, many wonderful music performances, and occasional visits by school kids. We also receive excellent Room Care, Cleaning, and the enjoyment of areas kept in great condition by indoor/outdoor Maintenance staff. There have been recent delicious/healthy improvements to the dining services including well prepared food and healthy serving sizes. Other weekly adventures such as Art classes and Poetry are provided by volunteers, and enthusiastically brighten our minds and spirits. The residents receive the kind and professional understanding and actions of the large group of caring staff. Sure, sometimes we like to complain; and in fact this crazy (complaining) hobby just may be based on the years it took for the Red Sox to finally win the World Series . . . . again, & again & again [2018, 2013, 2007, 2004, ...1918, 1916, 1915, and 1912]. But let us all just be Thankful 🙂 Also, there are many well-fed birds living outside rent free, in the beautiful surrounding yard areas. It's a real treat to live the retired-life without having to clean my "car windows" any more; to sense the true beauty of birds, and squirrels. The back yard area also views the Minuteman bike trail (over the fence, just beyond the trees), and it feels good to see others actively riding their bikes. The Minuteman bike trail measures approximately 6-miles within the town of Arlington. I've ridden my bike here in the past, and the trail is mostly flat, and easy to ride. But as "Sunrise of Arlington" customers, we truly are thankful for the services provided, and the true care of the staff. Every day is new day, and we start with fresh hopes for another good day. But be prepared, the loudest shouts anyone will hear from this place are B-I-N-G-O!.
