My parents have lived at Brookdale Hawthorn Lakes for over 2 years. The apartments are updated and spacious with lots of closet space and there are so many activities and events to choose from. But most impressive is the staff. From the front desk, to maintenance, to client services, to staff I've just met in the elevator, everyone has been so kind and incredibly helpful. Great place!

Because of physical problems, my mom moved from her house into Brookdale Hawthorn Lakes in December 2025. Hawthorn Lakes was recommended to us by a friend, whose mom and grandmother had both lived there and loved it. It was a sudden, unplanned change in my mom's life, and she's in her 90s, so we were concerned for her and worried about how the move would go. In addition to her physical problems, she also has some dietary limitations, which led to her being refused by a different independent/assisted living facility, so we weren't sure whether she'd be accepted anywhere. Hawthorn Lakes staff came up with solutions to help my mom with daily living tasks, and they even came up with a solution to handle her dietary requirements. Their care and their creativity in generating solutions to help my mom show that they are absolutely dedicated to what they do. Everyone at Hawthorn Lakes is great. From my initial visit and meeting with Amber, to today, everything has gone smoothly. I go there nearly every day, so I've gotten a good feel for it and for the staff. The staff all exhibit the ideal mix of being professional yet friendly and warm. They're very approachable whenever we have a question or concern. I trust them completely with my mom. She feels safe, happy, and comfortable there. They've made an extremely difficult part of her life easier and calmer. The Brookdale at Home program ensures that my mom gets the attention and assistance that she needs with various daily tasks. The program is entirely flexible -- you can choose however many caregiver visits you want per day, and whatever amount of time per visit that you want. The caregivers are fabulous. Their kindness and patience are truly incredible. The entire facility is clean and well-maintained. The common areas are large and welcoming. The morning fitness classes are great. My mom's apartment is bright, spacious, and pleasant. We look forward to the springtime, when we can take my mom out to Big Bear Lake and Century Park, which are adjacent to her building. We're very happy so far, and would definitely recommend Hawthorn Lakes.

Our mom always said she’d end up at Hawthorne Lakes (Brookdale), and she did. There were many obstacles along the way to her getting there, including a stop off at another assisted living place first, hospitalizations, rehab, etc. She’s older than most residents and has substantial health issues, but a solid mind and memory. The team at Hawthorne Lakes bent over backwards to figure out ways to make it work for mom to be able to stay in her apartment there and get the help she needs. It was a refreshing change from where she had been before, and the Brookdale at Hawthorne Lakes team is so kind, caring, and professional. Not only that, it was priced well under the other place, which had great facilities but lacked the care and staff. The only reason for not giving Brookdale 5-stars has to do with the facility itself. It’s a bit narrow in some hallways and when everyone is out and about, it can get a little tight in some common areas, especially when so many residents are using walkers and wheelchairs. That being said, they make it easy for families to spend time together in special rooms or to even reserve a dining area for a special occasion, which our family has done several times. We’ve loved dealing with everyone at HL Brookdale, and know that they will do everything in their power to problem-solve a situation to make it workable and comfortable for the resident and their family.

We feel so fortune to have our parents close by and in a place where they can be independent, but not have to worry about the day to day stress of cooking and cleaning! They finally get to enjoy and have time for all their hobbies! Brookdale Hawthorn has gone above and beyond to make accommodations for my FIL woodworking hobby and my MIL love for sewing. It’s set on a beautiful pond and walking path, and the grandkids love to join for occasional meals to cash in on the yummy desserts! All of the staff is so friendly and welcoming”especially Lisa who worked so diligently with us to make this move happen. She was an active listener, sincere, and delivered on all her promises. We highly reccomend Brookdale Hawthorn for anyone who is ready to relax a bit, gain a social network and have medical staff available should any needs arise!

Today is my 5th anniversary at Brookdale Hawthorn Lakes Senior Retirement Living in Vernon Hills, Illinois, 4 miles south of Libertyville, where I had lived for the previous almost 43 years. As for Brookdale, time flies when you're havin' fun. One of the biggest positives here, although so far I haven't needed this, is that they will check on you every day if they haven't seen you or heard from you. This I have always covered when I come down to the Front Desk every morning to get the Chicago newspaper that I subscribe to. Two meals a day in our dining room are covered in our rent, which I have always had as the appropriately named Midday Meal (Really dinner #1 of the day, rather than lunch), and then evening dinner. Breakfast I then fix myself, in my apartment. My apartment view includes Little Bear Lake, three evergreen trees, two yellow weeping willows, plus in season the regular trees when they have leaves.Wednesday here is my weekly housekeeping in the apartment, provided by Brookdale, and Thursdays are my weekly laundry appointment in our Brookdale laundry room. Brookdale provides us transportation to and from at least medical appointments. Some doctors come to the Brookdale Clinic, which is nice. Brookdale Country Store, on the first floor, has been cash only for awhile, but they carry some food and other items. The many activities here include Flex Your Brain (trivia competition) on the Mezzanine, and at least one Mezzanine movie every week. Our library, where I am now, has three computers for residents' use. I like living here. Come see me.

My mother lived at Hawthorn Lakes for more than 3 1/2 years and I continued to be impressed with the personalized care, starting with the fact the every staff member knows every resident by name. Over the years we dealt with most of the services offered. Maintenance requests were responded to in a timely manner, OT/PT/personalized living staff were knowledgeable, patient, and kind. The kitchen staff made a variety of accommodations when needed and with a smile. Any request made to Heather was dealt with promptly, with genuine concern and flexibility. And I cannot say enough about all of the ladies at the front desk. No matter the time of day or night that I walked in I was greeted personally and helped in a friendly, yet professional manner. I slept well at night knowing my mother was in the hands of caring professionals. It is without reservation that I recommend Hawthorn Lakes.

My Father has been a resident of Brookdale for the past four years. Initially, we were concerned as to how he would adjust to senior living at 86 years old. Thankfully, he has done very well and continues to thrive, even in these difficult and challenging times. This is due to the outstanding staff that try to meet his daily needs and do what they can to make him happy. Not an easy task many days!! My Dad is always treated well and very importantly, as an individual. The staff really get to know everyone . We could not have asked for a better outcome nor could we have provided such a positive environment ourselves. Our family is so very grateful for all of the wonderful care that Brookdale has provided. The staff continually amaze us in how they thoughtfully and respectfully handle any issues and/or problems. My mom has been living at Brookdale since August and has been very happy there. A cleaning lady comes once a week to clean her apartment. With Covid, meals are delivered to their rooms - they have GREAT food! There is an exercise class to go to right at the facility, tons of books to read from their very own library (as well as movies to watch) or you can check out books from the Vernon Hills library. There is a knitting / crochet group and Bingo! And that is just naming a few of what they have to offer! A parking spot can be purchased in a covered garage as well. Walking around Big Bear Lake is right out the back door when you would like to get some fresh air. All you have to do to take advantage of this is walk out your front door. A great place to live - and for us, only a 15 minute drive from home!

For the past year I have been visiting Brookdale Hawthorn Lakes with my husband. We were initially invited for lunch and an informative program. At that time I was looking for some program that would benefit my husband who has dementia. The staff was more than helpful. We found a caring, warm and professional group of staff members who were most able to provide information and help even though we did not reside at Brookdale. At the present my husband is still at home with me because it has been working out for now. Since the initial visit we have been included multiple times for meals and programs and have toured the facility. It is clean, well maintained and the residence are well cared for. Visiting Brookdale and participating in their activities always leaves my husband and I very happy. Get to know them. Brookdale is more than buildings on a beautiful lake!

Excellent community. We were searching independent living locations near our home for my mother-in-law. When we brought my mother-in-law the Brookdale Hawthorn Lakes for a tour, she was extremely negative about the whole idea. However their sales rep, Sharon Belloff did a fantastic job of changing her negative attitude to a more positive outlook. Although my mother-in-law did pick a different community to live in, I feel that Brookdale has hired an excellent employee, Sharon Belloff, to help families convenience their loved one that communities like Brookdale provide a safe and secure living arrangement.
