For almost three years, I have enjoyed a spacious, updated, and affordable apartment at Baker Park near downtown Bemidji. The historic building has many amenities, including: sunroom, on-site laundry facility, exercise room, locked entry, pleasant lobby, hair salon, conference room, and community activities. With a stunning view of Lake Bemidji, Baker Park Housing is centrally located and walkable to: Harmony Foods, USPO, Kitchigami Public Library, many locally-owned restaurants and bars, Bemidji State University, Diamond Point and Paul Bunyan Parks. It's not unusual to see Bald Eagles soaring overhead or perched on branches in the park that serves as our "front yard." Even better than the location though is how well managed Baker Park is. Gwen works tirelessly to ensure each new resident has an easy transition to the community by helping with paperwork, and by making everyone feel welcomed and ready to enjoy a clean, beautiful, peaceful, and SAFE place to live. Gwen is not only accessible, she is also exceedingly patient and unfailingly kind. Darin, our easy-going maintenance technician, is super responsive! He keeps everything in good repair, and helps residents with tasks that involve ladders and power tools! Long-time Baker Park volunteer, Carla, organizes activities and outings — providing opportunities for socializing and lots of fun. She also helps some less-mobile residents with shopping and meal delivery. In the summer, Carla coordinates the effort to make Baker Park even more beautiful by growing flowers. Her sister Paula keeps the lobby filled with bouquets of the beautiful and unique varieties of tulips she grows in her gardens. My experience at Baker Park has exceeded all expectations, and I especially appreciate the aforementioned folks who work hard to make it exceptional!

Baker Park has transitioned into an independent living apartment complex. There is no longer nursing care, but a portion of monthly meals are included as part of the rental payments. The menu is created by a Sanford dietician and served daily in the main dining room or as a "take-out" option for the residents. The food plan is varied, healthy, and delicious. The entire facility has undergone a major update while maintaining wide corridors and many lovely common spaces. Apartments also still have the emergency pull cords and zero entry showers and some handicap assessible bathrooms as well. Our parent's apartment was immaculate, freshly painted, had new flooring, and boasts a lake view. It is a wonderful spot for a 65+ person. The activities director and the facility manager are excellent! They care about the facility and the residents and work to provide inviting common spaces and a wide variety of activities for the residents. All utilities (except cable/wifi) are included. Parking is abundant with ramp access as needed for wheelchairs or walkers. The entrance is also secured by coded cards and has an intercom system to admit guests from each apartment. Laundry is onsite - and super affordable. Baker Park has two elevators and a full-time maintenance person to assess and fix any facility issue. If you have a senior citizen with a limited income in your circle, this is a wonderful place for them to be. Lakeview living with wonderful access to the sidewalks for walking. The waterfront is even in walking distance to enjoy the activities like Music in the Park. It's worth your time to talk with the folks at Baker Park and discover this wonderful senior citizen "hidden gem!"
