I'm a caregiver and I have client at the VDM. I bring my client to morning exercise, Alec and Heidi run the gym. They both really care about the well-being and make a difference in the health of the residents. In my opinion they are the best.

I stayed at Vista Del Monte for a week with a relative who needed round the clock care while he waited for his room to be ready at their 'memory care' facility (which includes round-the-clock supervision and care.) These are the observations I made in that time : The staff is doing an excellent job caring for their residents and treats each person as a unique and valued individual. Every staff member we encountered knew my great uncle's name and greeted him warmly. The kitchen staff were fantastic and accommodating. Any time we had unique requests for condiments or extras (any time of day) they were always happy to oblige. There were two ladies in particular that remembered my name (even though I am a guest and not a resident) and made a point to address me by it, which I thought was very professional and kind. I believe their names were Jennifer and Melissa. On the occasions when we went to dine in the outdoor dining pavilion the wait staff was on par to any high end restaurant in town. I would know as this is what I did for a living for many years. I was shocked...especially considering they don't accept tips anyway...they were just that good because they cared. William stood out as being especially accommodating when our 'reservation' got messed up (my fault) one day. All of the medical staff who came to the room to give medications or do wellness checks were professional and kind. One woman (Juline) was particularly warm and cheerful. Everytime she left my uncle commented on how much he enjoyed her visits. The 'resident services' staff were always going above and beyond with any request I brought to them. One lady in particular (Angie I believe) stands out. When I needed to do laundry for my great-uncle, but it was after hours so their little shop was closed she went to her car and got her OWN laundry detergent that she happened to have with her and gave it to me to use! I could go on and I'm sure there are many staff that deserve specific mention that I've forgotten to include (I should have been keeping notes all week) but in general the entire staff was amazing and I don't have one single less than stellar incident to report.

Moving to Vista del Monte is one of the best things I've ever done. I have lived alone most of my life. I don't drive and have relied on bicycling to get around town. I needed a community setting. I didn't know anyone who lived at Vista del Monte so had to rely on my first impressions when I scheduled a tour. I liked it immediately. Stacie Dawes was my tour guide and answered all my questions. She detailed the experiences that I would likely encounter. She was very engaging and made me feel most welcome. I signed up for a studio apartment on the first floor that day! I have not regretted for a moment that decision. I've been here for almost 2 months now (2 weeks in quarantine). The food is great. The staff is always helpful. I've assimilated at my own pace and now take group walks every day and work out in their beautiful gym 3 times a week. They make regular runs to the grocery store, pharmacy, discount store and the bank during the covid crisis so I don't have to leave the complex. Like I said, this decision was one of the best I've ever made.

"Its a jungle out there" applies well to the process of finding senior living facilities for aging parents. A recent circular from Vista Del Monte offered "no application fee" April 1 to June 30, and went on to describe a monthly payment contract, an attractive alternative to a "buy-in," or generally nonrefundable cash down payment. Initial review of our parents' finances prompted a statement of "borderline.. but probably OK" from Marketing Director Jean Johnson, so we continued down the application road including a visit to VDM by our parents, health screening by their internist and even calls to local movers. Then, quite unexpectedly one week later, we received a call telling us that our parents would not qualify without an irrevocable trust, with VDM the beneficiary, in the amount 0f $300,000! VDM, in the person of Douglas Tucker, Executive Director, refused our offer to sign on to our parents' account as guarantors. We pointed out that the advertising circular offered entry on a month to month basis and did not describe the need for financial qualification. A demand for $300,000 sure seemed like a "buy-in" to us. We have personal family experience with several Santa Barbara senior living facilities so we are hardly among the uninitiated. Our recent experience should caution prospective residents to get the whole picture early in the process. VDM should be more honest with their applicants, early in the process, to reduce the emotional toll on the family that the senior living transition always brings.

My elderly aunt moved here when her husband died in 2013. She had to live in assisted care because of her physical needs. A woman named Ann was in charge at the time, and she was amazing! Also the individual caregivers were awesome. Things have been going steeply downhill since Ann left. At this point I don't think anyone is in charge of the quality of care. The website that shows violations of state codes for assisted care shows an uptick in serious violations over the past few years. I call to speak to someone about problems with my aunts care an no one ever calls back. I call the office and she doesn't know anything, messages don't get returned. It is too late to move my aunt again because she does have some good friends now but I worry all the time about her safety.
