04-15-2024 My name is Scott Maley. What can I say about Blue River? My wife and I lived there for four years. My wife is 15 years older than myself. I am 61, and handicapped, retired, and a Registered Nurse. My wife is 71, healthy, but has late stage Alzheimer's. We have been together 32 wonderful years, married for 24 years. OPCO owns Blue River. It is not about taking care of your loved ones with this company, it's about the almighty dollar. There is no compassion. It's just a business. Death. If you care about your loved ones THIS IS NOT the place for their final years. First of all, everybody is related. Nepotism runs rampant. That should tell you a lot. They hide and cover up everything. New management? Nothing has really changed except the owners. The food is on a low, if not the lowest, food grade possible and still be within government nutritional standards. That is ok I guess if you like lots of rice, noodles, chicken, and frozen fish. It is cheap and inexpensive. Last summer, 2023, my wife took a turn for the worse and I needed help changing her diapers because I could no longer accomplish this task as I am handicapped. I did not get help, even after seven months of complaining. They changed her once every 14 hrs. on average, for seven months. There were times it went over 24 hrs. between changes. I have documentation. Two CNA's for 50 residents is not uncommon. That is not good care. I complained to the administrator one Friday night and she said, "We are within regulations" and went home for the weekend. Not a second thought. At night, call lights would stay on for hours. They did not periodically change my wife. They also did not reposition her. Consequently she developed bed sores. I have documentation and pictures. Very unprofessional. For seven months I complained and documented. Her bed sores got worse. Instead of fixing the problem, the management at Blue River came up with a solution. They went behind my back and called our youngest son and told him that the nursing staff felt that I was impeding my wife's care and wanted to put us in separate rooms. Fabricated lies. THEY TRIED TO SEPARATE MY WIFE AND I TO SHUT ME UP AND MAKE IT SO I COULD NOT SEE THE CARE THAT SHE WAS NOT GETTING!!!. Our son said, "absolutely not" and was appalled they would even suggest that. I had to call the State and our Ombudsman. I have voicemails and documentation. Very unprofessional and against the law. At night the nurses and CNA's sleep in there cars or totally leave the premises for hours. Management was aware of this, I made them aware, but nobody seemed to care. Very unprofessional and dangerous. I would ask for pain medicine (morphine) for my wife but on many occasions it took hours for her to get it because the nurses and CNA's are too busy up at the nurses station gossiping, (they forgot) so my wife lays there and suffers. Nepotism. I have documentation. Very unprofessional. I lost count of how many dental appointments I missed because they would fail to coordinate the transportation or the paperwork was incomplete. Six appointments, I think. Not to mention my morning medicine was between 8 and 18 pills. Never the same amount. I guess they just gave me whatever they felt like giving me. I complained to no avail. My bandages that were supposed to be changed once a day. I would go a week until the "outside' wound doctor made her visit. She would complain about not following her instructions to no avail again. My bandages still did not get changed daily. I have documentation. Showers? Another bad story. I could go on and on. The care is appalling. The food is appalling. The management is incompetent, and very unconcerned. We were forced to move to a different nursing home out of fear of being separated and the awful care we received. The move put more unnecessary stress and anxiety on my wife and myself. We moved to Bellview Care Center in St. Joseph. It is like night and day. A much, much, better and capable nursing home all the way around. Especially the care. The food is better, no cigarette butts all over the ground, landscaping outside is kept up, no potholes all over the parking lot, etc. The environment on a whole is so much better. Bellview cares and they put an emphasis on life, not death. It is like night and day. Bellview Care Center in St. Joseph takes pride in the care and living conditions they provide, where as Hilltop at Blue River does not. There is a reason for Hilltop at Blue River's very low rating and the fact that they are prone to neglect and abuse. Do your research and read the ratings and reviews on CMS, as the employees at Blue River write their own reviews. Hilltop at Blue River had a very high death rate during Covid and they were on the National News. Hilltop at Blue River operates within the law. Barely. It is a very , very sketchy place. Notice no place to leave reviews on their website. Scott A. Maley 06-15-02024 UPDATE: Since our move to Bellview Care Center two months ago, my wife is doing remarkably better. She is eating again, her color is a lot better, she is smiling, talking, and her wounds are healed. She now eats because the food is palatable. She still has Alzheimer's of course, but she is being cared for very well. She is checked on every two hours or so. She is happy again and I am not stressed out and mad all the time. The environment is so, so much better. Far and above Hilltop at Blue River.

Went to visit my uncle today and as I expected he was in bed, because that's where he would rather be. I was surprised when the receptionist said I think you walked past him coming in and I said that probably wasn't him use he does like to come out much , actually I had just missed him, he was headed back to his room because he had acty been out mingling with the other residents for about an hour. After talking with him for a bit he stated the staff was actually nice and the food want as bad as he had previously told me and by the end of our conversation he stated he actually had gained some weight( which I could obviously tell) so he wasn't missing any meals. The facility was clean and didn't smell as many homes do and the staff looked as though they were happy to be there. Keep up the good work Blue River!!

I have enjoyed everything about Hilltop mainly because everyone is courteous, polite and respectful towards my brother giving him the care and love that is much needed. I appreciate all that each of the CNA's do for him no matter what time of day it is! Many thanks and blessings to each and everyone for what you do!!
November 2023
I'm so glad that new management has taken over this facility. I feel so much better having my loved one there. Just like any other administration in a busy facility, sometimes I have to wait for a call back, but they always communicate in timely manner.
November 2023
The Hilltop of Blue River is a thriving facility. They have a new Administrator, Amber who will embark upon changing the culture for the betterment of all. Not to mention, Latoya Kemp is back at the helm leading the nursing department as the DON. With her knowledge and skill set there is no doubt that the nursing dept will be stellar and top notch! Before we know it Hilltop will be in a league of it's own!
