I cannot say enough about the Lakewood Retirement Community! After years of looking and comparing continuing care communities my parents have recently moved into an independent living unit at Lakewood. Throughout this daunting process Alden Rice and Amy Curry were at our sides offering assistance, advice, and tremendous support that went above and beyond what is expected. Now as my parents are settling in to their new lives at Lakewood, we are all reminded how incredible ( and long overdue) this move was for their mental and physical health! Lakewood is the friendliest place on Earth... staff and residents included. The amenities abound including: state-of-the-art facilities, fine and casual dining, outdoor, indoor, independent, and group activities. Easy access to health and wellness resources, including on site medical care and therapies if needed. My parents' unit is bright, updated, convenient to everything on the Lakewood campus and they have easy access to information through an online application on their phones or a monthly magazine as to the abundance of daily activities offered there on site. My family is thrilled knowing my parents are active, engaged, safe, and embracing this incredible new, stress-free lifestyle! We all wish they had moved in before their mid 70's!

Attended an introduction seminar, October 2023. Followed up with Alden Rice for a personal tour in January. Alden was very patient and knowledgeable regarding all of our questions and comments. She had made appointments in advance, and we were able to personally visit 2 of the residences of interest. During our tour, Alden made it a point to greet many of the residents by name. We found Lakewood to offer many choices for independent living, with countless activities, friendly residents and staff. Top of our list for a CCRC, should we decide to make a move.

We had been contemplating moving to Lakewood and had been on the wait list for about 5 years. Our desire was to live in a freestanding home within the community, so when we received a letter notifying us that 19 new freestanding cottages were soon to be built, we made the final decision to move forward in the process of eventually calling Lakewood home. We moved into our new home on June 21, 2023 & the experience has well exceeded all expectations. Each staff member has been so gracious in accommodating and catering to all of our requests & each went above and beyond in service. This was always done with a smile, with respect & with understanding. The organization of each department within the Lakewood community runs better than a well-oiled machine. Within a few days of our move, each department head personally visited us in our home with the purpose of introducing themselves and explaining a bit about their role in serving us. We were confident that our major decision of transitioning our lives to Lakewood was right for us, but we were moved beyond grateful when we realized we had become the recipients of genuinely giving employees who truly want to meet our needs & requests. We're thankful that we are now part of the friendly, happy & well-cared-for Lakewood family.

Absolutely love this community and all the people who serve the residents. My mom moved in a month and a half ago. Ginger White, in marketing went out of her way to make the transition easy and smooth! The apartments are beautifully refurbished for every new resident and the facilities are gorgeous. There seem to be so many things to do in every day. Everyone is caring, friendly and kind! Highly recommend!

We moved mom into Lakewood in December of 2022, and it has been a great experience for her. The staff has been incredibly helpful throughout the entire process. The "campus" is beautiful. The facilities are first rate - the gym, the pool, the dining rooms, etc. And there is always something going on - celebrations, dances, shows, trips. Seems she has a more active lifestyle than her kids and grandkids now! Most importantly, Mom is happier than she's been in a long time. And surrounded by friends. We cannot say enough good things about Lakewood.

Lakewood is an accredited Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), one of 5 in the Lifespire organization. Currently, there are about 500 residents, most in "independent living" [as separate from Healthcare, Assisted Living or Memory Care]. The campus includes 5, 3-story apartment buildings plus mostly larger hybrids, villas & cottages. My apartment [in the oldest apt. building] has 2 bedrooms & bathrooms, laundry room & decent sized kitchen with the usual appliances, including a dishwasher. Costs [entrance fee & monthly fees] are based on the unit's size. The beautiful campus is well-maintained. Also, Lakewood's a pet friendly, non-smoking campus. Residences are updated or completely renovated when vacancies occur. Housekeeping visits every other week [dust & vacuum, cleaning bathrooms & kitchen. We can opt for an annual "deep" cleaning, too. The Fitness Center is managed by professional staff. There's a pool. The gym's equipped with high quality machines. Instructor led Fitness classes include water aerobics, core, balance, yoga & cardio drumming. Food The food is good! There are 2 dining options, a more formal, traditional restaurant [Cascades] and a casual cafe [Cafe 1900]. Currents, our "happy hour" lounge, has appetizers/light fare options & smoothies a couple of times a week. People In my opinion, regardless of amenities, it's the people [both residents & staff] who "make" the place. Lakewood residents & staff are welcoming, warm, friendly & helpful. You can be involved [or not!] in planned interest groups, educational programs, gardening, creative/artistic activities [art classes, choir, the Lakewood Players [acting, song & dance]. Or grab a book [most are large print] from our Ann Smith Library. Moving to a CCRC is a big step for many of us, whether you have family in Richmond or not. There's a lot going on; it takes some "getting used to." And we all transition at different rates. That said, having lived here for a year, I'm happy. It was a good decision for me.

So far I'm very pleased with my mother in law's transition to independent living at Lakewood. And relieved! She moved in a few months after the pandemic started, which had us all nervous. But she has been well taken care of from the time she moved in! The pandemic actually gave her a little bit of time to settle in and get used to the facilities without being overwhelmed, and she has had such great experiences so far with easy vaccine distribution, prompt maintenance, minimal sound - only noticeable if people talking in hallway outside her door but nothing from neighbors, a really great group of neighbors, and quick responsiveness to a concern over construction (they found a solution within a day!). And when the banks were closed due to Covid, she found that there was a bank downstairs in the facility that she could use as well! I feel like she is in terrific hands, and can't wait to be able to visit. I also hear it's quite beautiful.

My father fell ill and needed a place to recover after weeks in the ICU. We looked at several options in the Richmond area and chose Lakewood. We couldn't be happier! My father is enjoying the wide range of foods available, the helpful staff, and is recovering quickly. The rooms are nice, modern, and clean with terrific medical support. The staff are super friendly. A special shout out to Courtney Thompson in their sales department, who has helped us from 3,000 miles away tend to his care, inform us of options, and generally make this trying and stressful experience as pleasant and cheerful as she can.

This community is hands down, the best place to work as an employee! This 5 star rated healthcare community was absolutely an honor to work for. The staff and residents here are awesome! This is a great concept, continuing care throughout the continuum of care/life is the way to go. I would recommend Lakewood to anyone. Whether looking for Independent Living, Assisted Living, or Healthcare services. Their rehab team is awesome! The nursing staffing is by far the best in healthcare for Skilled Nursing and Assisted Living and awesome as well. This community is very inviting and hospitable. Compared to all of the communities and SNFs in the area, region, or nation. Lakewood stands above all. They are continually improving to provide a excellent living experience and also healthcare services to the community of Richmond. Keep up the Great Work! Always a Fan, Kevin Emory.

Donna Anderson and the Clinical Services nursing staff at Lakewood have been very helpful with my Mother and her medical needs. They are truly dedicated to my Mother's health and safety and demonstrate the proper "balance between mission and margin" that I would expect from one of Richmond's finest Life Plan Communities!
