My review of Lighthouse Senior Living is based on the past ~ten years (2014 to the present) that my sister has been a resident in their Assisted Living Community. My sister entered the community when she was sixty-two years old. What follows reflects my personal opinions based on 10 years of active engagement related to my sister's overall care, but also on observations and outcomes I've observed or were shared with me by other residents and staff. Nearly ten years ago, our family moved my oldest sister into Lighthouse Senior Living of Ellicott City. While I had toured/interviewed most of the Assisted Living Communities in Howard County, I chose Lighthouse based on a recommendation from a dear friend, whose extended family member had been cared for their. For the first several years (I'm guessing somewhere around ~five years), I would have rated Lighthouse with four stars, because in their line of work, I can't imagine any community truly being able to sustain a five star rating. At that time, the individuals who held the two key positions (Director of Lighthouse and Director of Nursing) shared the same values, goals and commitment to providing each and every resident the best quality of care/life they and their well-trained staff could provide. They, along with the rest of the leadership team, "walked the talk" and demonstrated a strong personal and professional commitment to meeting the unique needs of every resident. Life was REALLY GOOD for the residents (and their advocates)! When the Director of Nursing accepted a position outside of Lighthouse, the Director of Lighthouse wasn't far behind. Following each of their departures, that's when we started to see a decrease in the quality of care, the absence of a shared vision between the new Director of Lighthouse and the new Director of Nursing and various other changes that resulted in a lesser standard of care for the residents. This was exacerbated by the fact that the two key positions (Director of Lighthouse/Director of Nursing) experienced much turnover over the past ~5 years. Each replacement hire brought their own strengths and weaknesses, but again, in my personal opinion, the rapid turnover and brief tenure of each caused more disruption to their standards of care. To be continued in my next post to this site.

Mom has been a resident in the Memory Care unit for about 5 yrs. It was a difficult transition for our family and mom with her relocating out of her house and from another state. We were helped along that bumpy road to happiness by a caring, competent group of healthcare professionals. The physical environment is so comfortable to manage with beautiful courtyards , wide hallways, accessible common areas creating a very homey environment. Carolyn and her team are able to keep mom engaged, and happy . I am able to relax and enjoy our visits knowing she is so well taken care of. The NP makes rounds twice a week with nursing staff also available. The nursing staff is always accessible and in fact I have noticed how well they know my moms medical needs!

My aunt moved into the Lighthouse Assisted Living Facility in Ellicott City about a year ago. We visited on a weekly basis and found this to be a wonderful place in every way. We choose the Lighthouse for my mother and she moved in about a month ago. The staff and residents are one big family. Alex and his daughter Alley were exceptional. Everything Alex told me about the Lighthouse and my mother becoming a resident there were accurate and true. His daughter Alley is a very conscientious and caring individual as are all the staff. Amy is a medication technician who looks out for my aunt and mother like they were her own. Sabrina is the medical director for the facility. She is extremely knowledgeable and knows every detail about my aunt and mothers medical needs. Pat is one of the nurses there and she is also very knowledgeable and detail oriented. Caroline is the activities director. She is always happy and helpful and keeps the residents busy with a variety of activities. My mother was reluctant to move there at first. She had lived in her home for all her life. Within a very short period of time she is bright, cheerful and content. My aunt has been happy since moving there. My mother and aunt enjoy sitting outside on the front porch or in the courtyard. I am extremely happy and satisfied with the family atmosphere there and would highly recommend this facility for anyone who finds the need. I can't really fully express what a relief it has been for my wife and I to know my mother and aunt are taken care of so well.

My father spent the last three years of his life at Lighthouse in their memory care facility ("The Village"). I will be forever grateful for the incredible caring of their staff, their constant commitment and dedication to keeping Dad engaged, well fed, and entertained. When I visited, I could watch him interact with everyone and he was genuinely happy and felt safe and comfortable. You really can't ask for anything more than that. That said, we looked at a lot of memory care facilities before selecting Lighthouse. We chose Lighthouse because: * Meals are served restaurant-style at a table, not cafeteria-style, with a solid variety in meals. * It doesn't feel like a medical facility. Floors are carpeted or wood/parquet (but still walker-friendly). * There are multiple outdoor garden/sitting areas. The one accessible directly from the Village is fenced in so that exit-seeking residents can still be kept safe, but is absolutely beautiful, backing onto what appears to be parkland or some sort of preservation area. * The staff -- from top to bottom -- cares. When visiting facilities, look at the engagement level of the caregivers not giving you the tour; you can tell who actually cares and who's just collecting a paycheck. The Lighthouse team truly cares about their residents. * They actively work to engage and entertain the residents. There were times where Dad got out more than I did, going on bus trips and even bowling at one point. (The effort and staffing it takes to maintain appropriate ratios in those types of events is another indication of how much Lighthouse cares.) Musical performers are a regular occurrence (or were before COVID), and it's not uncommon to see the Village residents involved in physical activity like bouncing balls back and forth. I'm grateful that Dad was able to get the level of care he needed and have joy in his end of life. And Lighthouse deserves the lion's share of credit for that.

Just want to let you know how insanely happy our family member is living at Lighthouse! He told us this weekend how much he loves it there. But I have to say, I think the best thing about it is... The food! He cannot stop raving about Chef Eric and the wonderful, delicious food! Today he said that the cornbread is as good as his sister used to make and that it tastes like cake! But there are other wonderful things, too... Like the warm and friendly welcome he has received from everyone on the staff, the beautiful grounds for walking or sitting outside reading on a pretty day... and I'm sure much more to be discovered in the upcoming days and weeks. It's been a wonderful transition for him and our family deeply appreciates everything!

My 91 year old parents (mom and dad) have been residents of the Lighthouse in Ellicott City for 9 months and it has been an incredible experience for both of them. The dedicated care they get every day is loving and compassionate. There are so many activities for both. Exercise every morning, tons of activities and events, bead making days, greeting card making days, bingo, games, tons of live entertainment and lots of outings....there is always something special happening. The Activities Director is phenomenal. Carolyn is constantly planning daily activities that fits all of the residents. My parents were living with my family until my mom could no longer take the steps. I was very worried about the adjustment but we immediately felt the love when we walked in the door and it continues every day. Sabrina, the head of nursing staff has been incredible too. Whether there is a health issue, medicine adjustment needed or anything that needs to be addressed as residents are aging, she works with you to make everything as perfect as it can be. Always putting the residents first. The food is excellent. My dad is a big food critic and constantly compliments the chef. Recently my mother had to move to puree foods due to health issues and the options for her have been plentiful and they transitioned her over smoothly. The nursing staff, caregivers, med technicians, activities director, facilities staff, dining room staff, volunteers and the cleaning crew have all been amazing. This has been a real home to them and that's rare and hard to find. We are very blessed that the Lighthouse staff has been such a family to all of us. We are forever grateful! The Bond Family

I am in the home care business, and have had many interactions with Lighthouse's staff, management and residents over the years. I can say that this facility provides quality services and really cares for their residents well-being.

My friend loves Lighthouse for her Mom. SHe's made so many friends there and is so much more active than she was. Her last facility had constant staff changes and that's hasn't been the case here. I was there for a visit the other day and was impressed with how lively it is. I thought I'd leave a few words.

I love this place. They have been providing care for my Loved One for almost fives (5) years. My Loved One came in under weight and with other medical issues including an enlarged prostate and catheter. Through proper medical care, dedication to making sure medications were taken, a healthy diet and a customized personal environment, healthy weight was achieved, the catheter was removed, and life is so much better. The management staff have been respectful, attentive, and have worked with me to establish happy, safe and sustainable care. Even when my LOVED One got agitated and was combative with staff, I never felt worried that there would be reprisals or abuse. There are meaningful activities for Loved Ones and family alike. The Executive Director, Wellness Director, Nurses, Manager of the Memory Unit and even the Facilities Manager are awesome! They have made this burden much easier. Is it perfect? No, but I have not lost trust in them.
September 2017
Maybe not the best place for someone with a plethora of medical conditions, but for my loved one (diabetes, dementia, cataracts) this place is wonderful. He is so happy here. Really feels that he has a purpose and that this is his community. I can't imagine a better place for him. Pricey, but worth it to have him safe and treated like a valued human being.
