My wife was at Charter for over 2 years before losing her battle to dementia. I never regretted my decision to place her there. The caregivers, nurses, kitchen staff, maintenance crew and administrators were incredibly supportive and loving to her and made sure she was able to live with dignity and independence to the end. Charter is the best memory care facility I have ever seen, creating an environment that is tailored to the special needs of those with dementia. Judy and Chris organized a wide range of activities such guest musicians, arts and crafts, holiday themed events, and ice cream socials all designed to engage and stimulate the residents. Mark the chef was always giving her cookies and as we walked through the building the caregivers always gave her hugs. Will the Executive Director took a personal interest, taking time to get to know my wife and how to create the best environment for her. He took the time to help educate me on this disease and Judy runs a support group that was extremely helpful in learning to deal with this disease. If you need to find a place for a loved one with dementia, you can not do better than Charter Columbia.

I am so grateful for Charter Senior Living of Columbia. My dad has been so happy ever since moving here one year ago! The activities director, Judi, is so loving and so much fun; she creates such a happy environment. And the caregivers are so good at figuring out what makes my dad tick, and how he will respond positively to situations. My dad's physical and mental health have both improved significantly in the last year, which is pretty amazing at his age! Also, CSL is always spotless, in the common areas as well as my dad's apartment and bathroom. Thank you, Charter!

Memory care is always a hard and emotion-filled decision. Our family is grateful for the staff at Charter. My mother-in-law is safe and cared for. The staff also cares for us! Shout outs for Chris (activities director), Judi (LCSW), Suzi (sales but MORE a champion advocate!) and the nursing team.

We visited Charter Senior Living of Columbia for our mother. We were particularly interested in the memory care unit and were very impressed with what we found. It was a happy and loving place. The residences were very engaging during our visit. We were impressed with the number of activities the residents are offered. Also, we were impressed with all the staff knowing all of the residents' names.

I recommend that you change your food to Totally organic, grass fed meat and 0 vegetable oils. The only truly healthy oils are coconut oil and butter. I believe these 3 changes would totally change the health of your residents. Your staff is wonderful but all would benefit from better food Thank you!

This positive review is long overdue. My father has been a resident at Charter for two months. Moving him into an assisted living facility was a difficult and painful decision, but one that needed to happen. The wonderful staff at Charter have made this most challenging transition easier for our family. They are patient, kind, and attentive. They speak to and about my father with respect. Each time I visit they help me navigate the hard process of leaving him. The facility is clean, bright, and attractive. A major renovation has just occurred and through this process the facilities manager helped keep the residents comfortable. I am truly grateful for the staff at Charter. Thank you! Thank you!

How fortunate my children and I feel to have found Charter! We visited 9 facilities in the Washington DC area (some more than once), and found at the end that Charter stood out among the others. My husband has been in residence for 4 months, and we continue to be extraordinarily pleased with the care he receives. The wonderful Staff (from top to bottom) the facility, the food and above all the caring, patient attitude, and dignity afforded the residents by all is indescribable. Kudos to everyone there.

I was struggling with deciding between three different memory care facilities for my dad when I found Charter Senior Living of Columbia. From the very first conversations with Lisa and Leslie I knew this was the place for us! They were incredibly helpful and caring about my mom and dad's well being from the get go. Dad is now moved in and adjusting well. My mom is visiting every day and is loving the caregivers. She and my dad are enjoying getting to know other residents already. It's a wonderful family atmosphere at Charter and a superb layout for walks and socializing. It's such a relief for us, knowing dad is in good hands!

Putting my father in a memory care facility was one of the hardest most wrenching experiences of my life. My father's dementia had alienated so many friends- and family - and then facilities we were close to breaking when we found this place. My father felt safe and loved. I am so humbled and greatful for the care they showed my father til the very end.

I can give 5 stars, other people works there are nice, but except that person today on the phone! Her name is Nicole, a front desk worker. Bad attitude on the phone, been here many many many times, never treated like that before. She might not know what is RESPECT, don't act like a boss, she just a worker works there only.

We did extensive research into assisted living facilities that had care for dementia residents and found that Somerford Place (Now Charter Senior Living of Columbia, MD) stood head and shoulders above the others. Two, of many, reasons why Charter stood out were the facility was built from the ground up specifically for Dementia or Alzheimer's residents meaning the building design had them in mind and, the exceptional staff starting with the Executive Director Will Clark and all the support staff. All the staff exude a wonderful heart and caring for the residents—their care and wellbeing are number one! My mother in law is not one easy to please and she loves her new home even after 3 years at Charter. If you are reviewing assisted living facilities with Dementia or Alzheimer's care in mind, please be sure to include this facility in your search.

I am awed by the incredible care that my wife, Elaine, received at Somerford Place, Columbia, MD, from the moment she was admitted until the day she died. But the care began well before her admission, care for me that is, as I frantically sought some arrangement for Elaine when I realized that I no longer had the skills to care for her. My association with Somerford began after I called a placement agency (A Place for Mom), and Somerford almost immediately responded. My first contact was with the business office manager, Lisa Ferryman, who answered the plethora of questions I had, and who greatly put me at ease, letting me know that I had found the right place. Then William Clark, Somerfords Director, spent a great amount of time with me on the phone, further answering my questions. I remember being unusually tense and concerned about the pending change in our lives, and amid my panic and frustration with events, Will was the calmest, most soothing person I had ever encountered. When I first visited the home, before my wifes admission, Will spent a lot of time with me in person, explaining things, and further putting me at ease. Then, also during my first visit to the home, I met the Community Relations Director, Melanie Dands, and while all the other marvelous staff would be taking care of my wife, here I found the person who would be taking care of me. Melanie was a Godsend, and stayed in almost daily contact with me, checking in periodically to see how I was doing, and answering questions I might have. She was always my go-to person, and always the first person I would contact if issues or questions arose. Her deep personal concern for the residents in the home became clear to me when she played me a recording of a song she had written, expressing the probable feelings of a person with dementia, and their struggle with handling the changed world around them. It brought me to tears. And the staff members that actually cared for Elaine were so, SO, wonderful. I had a lot of issues to deal with, and Christiana Bonsu, the Resident Services Director, was extremely helpful in helping me communicate with outside agencies, and getting necessary things done. Judi Beyer, the Activities Director, and Cathy Vigus, Judis assistant, were the ones with whom I set up visits to see Elaine, and they did a marvelous job of keeping Elaine and other residents active and engaged. Even with the limitations on visits because of covid, I was very impressed with the care and involvement of these two wonderful professionals. And the nursing staff was second to none. I appreciate Priscilla Martin being with Elaine when she died; and Yamah Komeyan, a committed professional and a wonderful person, was the nurse with whom I had the most contact, and who regularly kept me informed about Elaines status. The entire staff worked so earnestly to help me get Elaine moved to her home in Mississippi while she was still living, though it wasnt meant to be. Elaine ended up in the hospital instead, and then passed away just two days after being released. There was a lot of discussion during all of this, and the care and concern that was conveyed to me by the Somerford staff was beyond any expectation that I ever had. I could not have possibly chosen a better place for Elaine to be for the final six weeks of her life. Elaines short stay was far from routine, and the response from the Somerford staff was truly heroic. The facility is wonderful, the care is beyond anything Ive previously experienced, and the leadership absolutely top notch. If I had another loved one requiring end-of-life care, Somerford is where I would have them placed…period.

Its only been two weeks since Mom has moved in to Somerford, and my family and I are very pleased so far with the program and people at Somerford Place. Of course, we were nervous about the transition to Somerford and the COVID virus. But they take it very seriously with rational and reasonable precautions. Melanie, Judi, Bejal, and Cathy have all been supremely helpful and communicative, and within these two weeks, they have already addressed some of the concerns we had with Moms health (non-COVID related). It is heartwarming to see the care they show to Mom who they have just met.

For the last 8 months since my sister is living at Somerford Place I am pleased with the cleanliness, friendliness and the willing to help those less fortunate. My mom is in the final stages of her battle with Alzheimers. Ive moved her 4 times in the last 3 yrs, across two states. Ive visited, reviewed and spoken to dozens of assisted living - memory care centers. Somerford totally gets it. They understand that assisted living memory care arent easily combined due to conflicting agendas resident capacities. Their caregivers are well trained, conscientious loving (for the most part - nothings perfect). The set up is Montessori-like and every care giver typically knows each resident, which quad they belong to and what their needs are. This practice comes from the top. Will Clark, who runs Somerford, is a caring seemingly tireless leader who takes each decision each residents needs very seriously and relies on his staff to carry out their duties w- the same thoughtfulness attention to detail. Its not cheap, but if you can get your loved one into Somerford, you will be grateful for your choice.

Somerford Place in Columbia is definitely one of a kind! The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and very helpful. The building is very safe and secure for the residents. The residents can walk freely through out the community and they can even go outside into the courtyard without any worries of your loved one wondering away! They have many stimulating and engaging activities for the residents, such as socials-cookouts, sing-a-longs, jewelry making-crafts and current events. Im impressed. The staff is well trained in dealing with people with memory problems, and cognitive deficit. Their director, Will Clark, spends hours with me making sure things go well, and educating me so I can care for my Dad better (they do all the work of caring for him, but I visit often and these visits are part of his care). I didnt ask for special treatment, it looks like they always do this. The rest of the staff is awesome too. Theyre all respectful, responsible, and caring. As I said, its impressive.

We moved my mother to Somerford Place four months ago when she could no longer live independently, and we could not be happier with the care she has received. From the moment we walked in the door for a tour we felt like this is the right place for her to be at this stage of her life. The entire staff is caring, friendly and attentive to moms needs. We are already bonding with many of the family members of other residents. Will, the Executive Director, has on more than one occasion provided extremely helpful advice on how to handle situations involving the challenges of caring for someone with dementia. My mother entered Somerford Place last week. After years of agonizing over how to best take care of my mother, I feel confident we made the right choice in choosing Somerford Place. The staff is nothing short of exceptional. They are patient, kind and understanding with the residents. There are four neighborhoods, and each neighborhood has the same caregivers every day - so the caregivers really get to know the residents. My mother already feels comfortable joking with and relying on the staff. When I visit my mother and see her so relaxed, I could not be happier. Huge thanks to Darlene Sellers, Somerford Place Marketing Community Relations Director, for all of the time and attention she gave to me and my mother in order to facilitate my mothers move into Somerford Place.

Linda Jensen 2 months ago On April 6, 2017, I moved my 66-year-old husband, into Somerford Place as his dementia had progressed to the point that it was no longer safe for him or myself to be in the home environment. When I arrived at Somerford place after looking at several facilities I was greeted with a much different and friendly approach from the staff. From the very beginning, the entire staff made me feel like they truly cared and understood the emotional impact this has on a family. Will, the Executive Director, spent a great deal of time with me and my friend, Sandy, who has been with Dick and I for three years as he has progressed through this process. At Somerford Place, I felt like there was someone there to hold my hand all the way through the admission process and on the day we arrived, the welcome my husband received brought tears to my eyes. The entire staff is beyond reproach, Judi, the Programming Director, is so caring and engaging; Maggie, the Chef, welcomes you with open arms and special dietary requests; Christiana, the Resident Services Director, makes herself so available and works with you to get your loved one settled in; and lastly each home takes ownership of their area with such excellent and caring staff like Lesley, in Ellicott Mills. There is a true sense of community for the residents and their families. I highly recommend that you schedule a tour of Somerford Place and find out what an exceptional community it truly is and could be for your loved one.

Somerford was the best visit ever! The spacious site was full of love, and I was especially impressed with the activities that were underway. My husband was recently diagnosed with Alzheimers and has been in and out of the hospital over the last few months. I have also been ill recently and needed to be hospitalized. The hospital social worker told me that my husband was going to be released but could not go home. I asked what I should do and was given a list of places to contact. Somerford Place was on the list. I called and was greeted by Phyllis. She was so warm and friendly. I explained to Phyllis about my situation. She informed me that I would be able to speak with someone and took my information in case we would get disconnected. I was then greeted by Lisa who said she was a Manager. She summarized what I had explained to Phyllis and I was very grateful that I did not have to repeat myself. Lisa was very knowledgeable and was able to explain to me the move in process and criteria. She asked if it was okay if she had the Marketing Director Darlene call me to follow up which I approved. She also informed me that I could call back if more information is needed. Darlene contacted me shortly after and she was able to summarize the conversations I had with Phyllis and Lisa. Darlene went more in depth with me about the move in process and gave me more insight about the disease and the hospital as well. In the end my husband was able to come home but as the disease worsens Somerford Place will be my first choice when it is time to place him.

I have been driving past this facility for years not knowing what it was until I starting looking for a place for my Mom. I am so glad I finally did! The receptionist was very friendly when I called. She was very knowledgeable and was able to answer many of my questions and put me at ease. I felt comfortable enough to speak with the Marketing person who not only answered my questions but also provided me with resources I never knew or heard about. She was also very flexible when scheduling my tour. She was able to accommodate my busy work schedule by offering my times in the late evening or the weekend. When I took a tour of the facility the staff was very friendly and all of the families-visitors were friendly and seemed happy as well. It was almost like a family type of environment.
