Around the turn of the century, I worked as a CNA, then as the activities director at Colonial Villa. Both of my parents had 'aging' issues so they moved into a two bedroom apartment at Colonial Villa with their cat, Muffin. When I had health issues due to a brain injury, I decided to move to Colonial Villa along with my cat, Danica. My room is xxx square feet. There's a dining area for my antique table and chairs, a small refrigerator. The rooms come with a microwave, but I prefer my small counter-top Kitchen Aid cooking oven. There's room for my antique dresser (for general storage). The living room/office area that has a 3-passenger sofa, recliner and a desk. I have internet access as well as phone service (separate service). The sofa backs up to my dresser. That bed room part also has a double bed and a night stand. There are two cossets that contain my cloths (winter/summer), seasonal decorations as well as lockable in-the-wall compartment. The bathroom has a 'walk-in' shower along with the toilet, sink and storage area. I live on the third floor, so my view out the window to the woods across the street is wonderful. One of the benefits to living here is that the Midland County Services building is just across the street. The Senior Services building is just across the street... walking distance. The "Seasons" building for adult day care is right next door, too. A couple of our residents go there every weekday. Our care staff helps residents at different levels of care. (needs more info about level of training and experience.) We have 3 meals a day, with our choice of two main dishes. Four or five residents sit at the same tables for every meal. Residents fill out menus a week before so the Chef can order the right foods. There are daily activities during the week days. They vary from 'art work' to other things that interest the residents. A part of activities is going by the CV bus to different places for lunch, as well as other activities. Other times the bus takes residents to local events and sometimes nearby towns. We routinely have entertainers come in from the community.... piano players, community singers, guitar and other instrumentalists. Our laundry is picked up weekly and returned clean the same day. And, the building is well maintained by the "maintenance man" who has worked here for more than 20 years, so it's kept in good shape. Families and friends are welcome to come and visit and share a meal with the resident by letting the staff know. They are normally invited to all seasonal holiday celebrations, which are often served as a buffet. A monthly calendar is published so residents can plan their day on what they'd like to do. A downside of living at Colonial Villa seems to be that there is a very high rate of turn-over with staff. Very few of the care staff seem to have training to be equivalent to a CNA.
