Update: reducing from 5 to 2 stars It's now three years that I have been at Balfour Riverfront Park and I am leaving this week. The last few months have seen a serious down-turn in the quality of the services here. My move away was prompted by a desire to be closer to family, but I am glad I am going for other reasons now. In the last few months many of the best staff have either left on their own or been fired for no apparent good reason. Example: one injured her foot at home (so not a job related injury.) Instead of offering her light duties until she recovered, she was summarily fired. She was one of the few people on the staff that had energy and motivated residents to participate in activities. Other recent changes are 1) The meal plan has been changed so that beer and wine can no longer be purchased out of the included meal plan but must now come out-of-pocket, an increase in the cost of dining here. 2) The number of resident activities has been dramatically reduced. 3) The valet ride service has been reduced from going until 9:30 at night to 8:30. 4) The valet ride service no longer guarantees a return ride from where they take you; you might have to buy your own Uber ride back home. 5) The new executive director (here 8 months now) has exhibited a lack of concern for resident input. He stopped consulting the Resident Advisory Committee on any matters. He canceled the biweekly meetings where he used to update residents on what was happening in the community. All of these changes have happened without warning or consultation with the residents. The change to the meal plan was done in such a way that even the staff did not know how to implement it when it happened. Everything now is in chaos. This once delightful establishment is falling apart. Only the great fellow residents remain, but if they choose to move out, this place will be just another old folks home with nothing to recommend it. -------------------------------- I have been living at Balfour at Riverfront Park for five months now. The transition to Independent Living was made much easier than I expected by the staff and fellow residents here who almost all have been welcoming and helpful. The several activities organized are varied and stimulating, not just the card games that most other senior living facilities have, but discussions of current events or serious book clubs for example. As the pandemic winds down more activities will be scheduled. The food is excellent and the servers friendly. They all know most of the residents by name and engage in conversations with those of us who want to. There is a standard menu with 6 main items that changes quarterly and daily specials with 5 items. Everything is quite tasty. Examples: filet mignon, rack of lamb, salad Nicoisse, Fettucini Alfredo with chicken, lasagna, halibut with mixed vegetables, pub burger, hot dog, really good onion rings!, salmon filet, boneless chicken breast. Our apartment is adequate to our needs. The common spaces are plushly furnished, but not overly so. Other recent reviews have mentioned problems with a serious water leak that happened recently. For two weeks there was no hot water and during a few days the water to the building had to be shut off from 10 am to 4 pm while the plumbing was replaced. The management offered free bottled water and arranged to take those who wanted to a nearby five star hotel where they had a couple of rooms booked so people could take hot showers. Since our son lives nearby we did not do this. During this event the director was upfront about every step of the process and kept us fully informed of what was happening. As a retired architect I could tell that the problem was being handle professionally as well as could be expected in these pandemic days. Overall I am extremely happy with our decision to have moved here and can not imagine a better place.

My grandparents have been living at the Balfour for about a year and a half. So often when people picture retirement communities, they picture dullness and sadness. But the Balfour could NOT be more opposite!! Whenever I visit the Balfour, I leave happier than when I arrived. Everyone living there is so friendly and the place is so full of life. Most importantly, my grandparents are so happy. The Balfour seems to have shaved years off their life! I would also like to give a special shoutout to Tina. She is a gem of a person and the Balfour is really lucky to have her as an employee. If I could give the Balfour more than five stars, I would!

I wonder if Human Resources asks the applicants if they love their grandma before they are hired. Laurel and Paula at the front desk are always very pleasant and can answer any question given to them. One of the drivers, Matt, went out of his way to make sure I am safe for repeated nighttime rides back home to Balfour. The culture of caring and patience at Balfour is practicedeg by Patrick Raab, the Executive Director who is very open and accessible.

My only real complaint is that our transportation bus is not adequate and is too small. We need a new one. The step is too tall and the seats are too small.

I want to commend one of your maintenance employees. His name is David Pena and his interactions with one of the residents was exceptional. I saw him come over to a resident, who has lost her vision, to speak with her. She was sitting alone, finishing her breakfast. David approached her, identified himself, and engaged in a short conversation with her. As he was leaving, she asked if she could give him a hug. David leaned down (he is MUCH taller than she) and gently hugged her back. She was so happy by his kind and caring gesture. She wasn't invisible. She was recognized and respected. The few thoughtful moments David took to acknowledge this resident altered the direction of this gentle lady's day. I saw her a few hours later and she was still smiling! Bravo, David. You make Balfour proud. We are fortunate to have you as one of our community's employees!

I have lived here for two years. The staff , especially concierges Myra and Ron, valet team member Al, and life enrichment team member Addison are the best. The kitchen staff are amazing. Miles makes the best scrambled eggs; Tova and Adrien made the best chocolates to go along with our wine tasting; Chris, the line cook always makes my steak and fish exactly to my liking. The servers as a whole enhance the dining experience. Katie, from Canada, Sophia, and Justin are all new servers and their attention to detail is amazing and what one would expect from servers with many more years of experience. Things started out very well when my parents moved there soon after it opened. Since that time there was increasing turnover in staff, fewer folks overall, and a decreasing ability to be attentive. Many there are absolutely wonderful folks devoted to their work but I've sensed they are less and less supported by the business behind them. Meanwhile, the rent increased significantly, nearly doubling in the eight years they were there for the same room and services. When my stepdad passed away and my mother had to move out, they charged 2 additional months claiming a 60-day notice rule, which felt a bit predatory given the circumstances -- especially since there's no evidence the policy was in place when my parents signed their lease. With senior living, one is always worried that there is kindness up front and then later an attempt to take advantage. Sadly, it's felt that way with Balfour in recent years.

Brighton Hospice has been working with Balfour for almost 3 years. We work in assisted living communities all over Metro Denver and Balfour has consistently provided top of the line resident care and customer service. Their food is also delicious which is very important Kat and Lavender in the memory care care so deeply for their residents, Laurel and Paula at the front desk and Rob at the front door always greet me by name with smiles, and Victour, Channan, Sarah, Rachel, Melissa, and Theresa give our patients the upmost love and care. Moving my mom from Houston to Denver was an extremely stressful experience. Luckily, I had help from the wonderful staff at her new location. Alex, the move-in coordinator, was able to work with our movers (who made multiple changes throughout the process)... Even on moving day, he arranged to have cheeseburgers for the guys when they finished. They said " no one has ever bought us dinner before" They were thoroughly impressed. I too was impressed with Alex and I'm grateful for his efforts to make my Mom's move less stressful.

Tina did an amazing job expediting my mom into assisted living. She and the team were lifesavers. I love this lower Downtown location because of the vibrancy of the area. They have gone to Rockies games, stadium tours, musicals and great nearby restaurants. It's a gorgeous place that feels good. My mom is safe and has nurses down the hall and she gets to have her little dog. Communication with the nurses and life enrichment team is not 100% which is why I didn't give 5 stars. There is also a great park across the street, which helps to balance the traffic and trains nearby.

Our mother entered memory care in spring of 2019 during the height of the pandemic. Balfour staff did a great job of accompanying our family through this difficult process and explaining all the details of the transition. I can't say enough good things about Balfour memory care staff. They are all so patient and compassionate, and seem to truly care about the residents and to appreciate my mother, despite the fact that as a very independent woman, she could often be defiant and difficult to help. I was especially touched that two memory care staff, Kat and Lavender, took time out of their personal lives to show up to the celebration of life we had for her. I especially appreciate the meetings and check ins my Dad, siblings, and me were able to have with the Memory care director and staff. I also commend Balfour for how their director and staff handled the challenges of the pandemic. They did their upmost to enforce the necessary protocolsto keep residents safe, while balancing the need for families to connect. I think Balfour did a much better job at this than most other senior living communities. I don't really have any criticisms to offer, other than it is an expensive place for seniors to live, and thus a very exclusive and privileged community.

A friend and I met for lunch at the restaurant and had a very nice meal. The service was signifigantly slower than you would find in other downtown restaurants. Living spaces are open to all tenants, friendly folks, very quiet but not many options for entertainment. Noted: The majority of the facility programs were cancelled and check points were in place for areas of the property. Overall a nice visit but lacks energy. I was fortunate enough to visit my friend for a cocktail hour recently and invited my son. We had a wonderful time tenant and employee watching but the employees seemed fatigued and disinterested. My son mentioned this dreariness and lack of enteriainment. The female bartenders we conversed with were engaging and chatty and encourage me to return for a tour. Not something we are interested in but we do enjoy our visits every now and then the The Balfour.

From the outside, it looks like a 5-star hotel; inside, it feels like it, with staff and help alike. We began our search for mom, and had heard of The Balfour (at Riverfront Park). When we came up, we didnt think we could afford it, but figured it was worth asking. We are so glad we did, and it was priced similar to other places. Mom was hesitant but once here, she has been welcomed in like family. She is respected in her space and time, though safety has been and is high on their list in taking great care of her. She is so happy her cat could join her, bringing much comfort and company. The Balfour has been great in communicating with both my brother and I, keeping us abreast of changes, with mom or the facility at large. They have a new and easy app to continue the great communication: I can order maintenance for mom, so she doesnt have to, and its taken care of. So. Easy. The food is really good, and varies enough for moms enjoyment. They also have the beautiful Peacock Room for, what I call, elegant fine dining. Anytime family or friends come to visit, we all meet for a meal here with mom, feeling luxurious in our dining without having to go out, convenient to all. I cant recommend this place enough, and can say your family member will be well taken care of here like our mom is. Or, if you are choosing it for Independent Living, you get the convenience of this beautiful facility, all its benefits, while being in the heart of Downtown Denver; you cant be the location, or the energy of the city. We are so grateful for The Balfour, and what they provide for our mom at this stage in her life. They have had major staff overhaul and changes these last two years. We have seen many friends go, and that was unfortunate; but, many new ones coming in are very pleasant. The cost has gone up every year 5%, which is quite a hike, so be ready when planning your familys budget.

My wife, Lynn, and I have lived at Balfour Riverfront Park for over 3 years, and we love it. It is a wonderful community, great residents, wonderful staff and administration. Things are not always perfect, but where are they? And while Balfour was a nice place to live when we got here, conditions have improved greatly over the 3 years. We have a Residents Advisory Committee, and the administration listens. The staff, top-to-bottom are personally committed to excellent service and they deliver it. When there are problems, they are usually handled in a timely manner. Food service, housekeeping, maintenance, concierge, all excellent. And when there are issues, communication is open and honest. This was a good place to live when we got here, and it has gotten much better. It has also become a much better place to work, judging by the performance, attitude and retention of employees. Lynn and I made a very satisfactory choice to live here.

Ill never forget the anxiety I experienced when it came time to place my mom and dad in an independent living facility. Imagine how grateful I was when I discovered Balfour at Riverfront Park. The facility is more reminiscent of a Ritz Carlton hotel than a senior living center. My parents loved it – the activities, the chauffeur-driven autos, meals at the Peacock Court or in their home or at restaurants on Larimer Square. It brought me great peace of mind. Sadly, mom passed and, shortly after that, dad moved to assisted living. Balfours staff – and their pandemic protocols – have kept dad safe and well cared-for. As of today, hes had both of his vaccine shots at Balfour and were looking forward to resuming in-person visits. Experiences at both independent living and assisted living were top-notch, particularly during the pandemic.

The last year has been MORE than challenging with the covid pandemic but with the wise, judicious and unwavering leadership from our Executive Director we have been able to keep our community staff and Residents safe. We are blessed to say that we have not lost anyone while other Senior Living communities have had multiple unfortunate tragic losses. Our company invested a huge amount of money to covid test every employee and Resident each week to ensure we would not have an outbreak in our community. As well, we are vaccinating all Residents and Staff in the next few weeks. Working at Balfour is more than a job, its being part of a family. We care so much about each and every Resident and are able to cater our services in a very personal way. While nothing in life is ever perfect, the way the leaders of the community collaborate and communicate is nothing less than impressive! The service industry is alway plagued with staffing challenges but in our community we all pitch in to help each other when staffing issues arise or there is a Resident that needs support. We are aligned by a common goal (taking care of our Residents) and we make it happen. If you are interested in working for a great company or are looking to move to a home where you will be treated as family, Balfour Riverfront Park is the place for you.

Balfour Independent Living at Riverfront Park in Denver is a mixed bag. When you walk into Balfour, your breath is taken away by the exquisitely designed common areas. The five star decor is beautiful and elegant, bright and welcoming. The apartments are nothing to rave about, but every inch of the common areas from the main living room to the dining room to the library, and even the salon, are pure cheerful delight. The three star service, on the other hand, is disappointing and unpredictable. The members of the upper management team are disconnected to the residents and to each other. They dont know what they are doing because the turn over rate is off the charts so they are always new (or absent because their positions have not yet been filled). Communication amongst the different teams and with the residents is lacking. The right hand doesnt know what the left hand is doing leading to inefficiency, chaos, and levels of incompetence that are just down right unacceptable in a place such as Balfour that is intended to be of such high caliber. Non management members, however, are wonderful, accommodating, compassionate, and the best part of what Balfour has to offer and in some ways make up for what the upper management team is incapable of accomplishing. Unfortunately and sadly, their turn over rate is also very high. It appears that Balfour has not figured out how to show appreciation for their Riverfront employees enough to keep them happy and on the job. With a turn over of four chefs in less than a two year period, the dining room service along with its food quality (other than the to die for pastries) is less than mediocre and has been an ongoing never ending disaster. For a facility that sells itself as a five star community and charges exorbitant fees to match the five star promise, their residents deserve better than three star service. With all of that being said, Balfour is dog friendly and centrally located. If you or your parents are culturally oriented and consider pets part of your family, then you cannot beat the dog loving environment and the downtown location. The best part about Balfour are the residents and the supportive camaraderie they share. Sure, you could rent a beautiful unit in a full service apartment building for half the cost but you wouldnt find the friendships and companionships that you find amongst the Balfour residents. For that reason, Balfour is worth a shot. Just understand that the service isnt as pretty as the decor and be prepared for a lot of frustrations and disappointments along the way.

Independent Living at Balfour at Riverfront Park is an elegant upscale 5 star resort with superb New York decor including extravagant furnishings, historic murals, paintings, grand hallways, library, and event rooms. Many residents are doctors, former attorneys, and successful business executives. There are numerous amenities including meal supplement for dining in the wonderful white linen table restaurant, fitness center, pool and jacuzzi. Balfour offers plenty of daily activities including lectures from university professors, entertainment, movies, musicians, trips to theater, botanical gardens, etc, There is a beauty salon on site. The staff and residents are extremely nice. Several apartment plans shown on website. I moved in a few weeks ago and love it. Happy resident

The Balfour Riverfront is a beautiful facility in downtown Denver, centrally located to all that Denver has to offer. There are so many beautifully decorated common rooms for residents to enjoy. Whether its the heated indoor pool, workout room, historic train depot, or the bar, movie room, one can find a quiet place to read, have coffee, or visit with a friend. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The new head of nursing in assisted living has greatly improved care, especially for those residents in need of higher-level care. The Balfour isnt perfect, but the staff is open to feedback and responds quickly to concerns of its residents. I would highly recommend the Balfour for your loved ones. It is not only a beautiful, comfortable safe place for your loved ones, but it is a nice place to visit for family members and minutes away from Wholefoods, restaurants, shopping, and Commons Park. Although the leasing staff knew that we were not immediately looking to move, we were treated very well. Over a delicious lunch we had all of our questions answered in a straight- forward manner. The tour of the facility was very thorough including both independent and assisted living spaces as well as the luxurious public areas. I love visiting my grandmother in law at The Balfour. The place is beautiful and the valet parking convenient. The staff is also great. I like eating at The Peacock restaurant. The service at the restaurant has really improved but the new chef has yet to wow me. The food and service today at the 3rd floor restaurant was horrible! What is going on?
