Hearth and Home has been a very positive experience for my Mom. It has a "homey" feel. The staff is extremely friendly and loves her. Management treats Mom as if she's her own mother. And I've seen the whole staff show care and respect for all the residents.

Start off by saying I’ve been in a lot of Care Centers in Dayton, Springfield, Beavercreek and Woodstock. And honestly this is one of the best well kept and friendliest Care Centers I’ve ever been in. The rooms are spotless and a very home like setting and the level of care is amazing. The staff is very helpful and actually cares about this residents. If my parents ever needed to be cared for this is the place. And the food is Home cooked and always smells so good they have it all. Also always some activities going on to socialize with the residents. This place is very impressive other Care Centers need to come and take note of how to Care for someone’s loved one. 5

Do not place a loved one here. Particularly if memory care is needed. The woman, Donna, the saleswoman was fantastic. She helped us out at the start. Made the transition much easier and less stressful. Suggested Hospice as a way to get more care and expedite the move. She believes in HH of Vandalia, you could tell she is proud of it. The level of care and the continuity of care with little turnover promised turned out to be not true. I say not true, rather than a lie, because I want to believe she does not know what is actually going on since she left and was promoted. HH was likely a good option in the past. It is no longer. Unfortunately, and maddeningly, the care was - is terrible. Too many specific instances to list here. I will simply say that there is massive turnover. They apparently are unable to retain anyone. There is consistently a staffing shortage, and rely on agency temp nurses who do not know the residents needs. The interactions I have had with management have been ridiculous. I was flat out lied to by the DON. If not lying, the DON is adversarial, uncaring, unfair and sometimes outright hostile about the people she is supposed to be in charge of medically. Based on interactions with her I have no doubt no one can work under her very long. I understand there is a nursing shortage and the most important jobs are not paid as they should be. Maybe the care is so dismal because they do not pay their employees enough. Bottom line, do not rely on reviews older than 6-12 months. Do not place your loved one there. We are struggling with what to do with my father. Continue to fight it out and hope he is being given medications prescribed, not just the prn as needed ones that overly sedate him. Hope they occasionally bathe him, hope he isn’t stuck in soiled pants for 45 min. etc. THEY ARE NEITHER EQUIPPED NOR STAFFED FOR MEMORY CARE PATIENTS. The one thing they do well is they usually get all of the resident out of there room and up at least for a meal or two every day. UPDATE: After considerable effort, my father’s care improved. The Resident Assistants have a difficult job, many were kind, caring, and hardworking, doing what is no doubt an often thankless job. That my father’s care improved surely meant other residents were ignored. There are approximately 40 people/residents at H&H. 2 RAs and 1 nurse at night and on the weekends is not enough. The day nurses on the weekends continued to be agency. Generally they were equally as caring and hardworking as the RAs. However, as essentially temp workers the scope of what they could do was limited. For example, I asked an agency nurse what medications my father had been given over the last 24 hours. He had been agitated and medications adjusted. They did not have access to this information. Despite the better treatment, H&H did not have any actual memory care. After visiting several true memory care facilities in the Miami Valley area, it was clear my father was not getting what he needed. The patient to care-provider ratio for a memory care facility is terrible. The staff had no specific education or training in caring for dementia patients. As a result, the care and activities were not designed to improve the dementia patients quality of life. We decided to move him. Heartbreakingly, my father died 2 days before he was scheduled to be transferred. He left us before we could get him the care he needed and deserved. *Again, do not leave a loved one with dementia at H&H. *However, H&H is a lovely facility. The layout is homey and comfortable with a really nice center area for activities. I would place a loved one at H&H if they had no cognitive deficits and needed less care than my father did.
