Choosing a new community for my father was one of the hardest decisions I have had to make based on previous community experiences and evolving circumstances. Reading Dr. Atul Gawande’s *Being Mortal* (must read) beforehand would have helped me set more realistic expectations sooner and avoided my heartache at previous facilities: no facility, however well-marketed, can replace ongoing, active family involvement, even if it all falls on you. The best outcomes have come from treating staff as partners, not substitutes for our own oversight and delegating other appropriate responsibilities, if possible. The Southampton team has been attentive and caring within the scope of what any senior living community can reasonably and realistically provide. Like any large organization, quality varies by leadership, individual, shift and by need, and families should expect to stay closely involved as care needs evolve, not set and forget or warehouse. For families willing to remain engaged active partners, the Southampton can be a good match yet they cannot replace competent, loving family. For those expecting full delegation without active involvement by family and coordination with outside resources, it won’t be a match, and that’s not any community’s fault. It has been my experience with every community. After 18 months, I am grateful for the genuine moments of connection and dignity the Southampton staff and our private caregivers have offered my father to insure he continues to live the quality of life he has defined for himself and we seek to create for him.

Madeline Cagney was a great hostess at Village of Southampton’s anniversary celebration yesterday. She helped me experience the event so that I could interact with residents and enjoy the beauty of this luxurious property. It truly got my attention. My mother lives here. This used to be a great facility until they appointed a new GM. First name is Meaghan. I have tried numerous times to reach her without success. Residents must now be in their rooms to get medicine rather than being social which is so important to older residents! As a result, my mom didn’t receive her blood pressure meds for two days and her BP skyrocketed to 180. Tonight, after we took her to dinner, she was locked out of the facility at 7:45! This place is a mess and is being woefully mismanaged for the benefit of the GM rather than for the residents. My mom has many friends here but if something doesn’t change immediately, we will have to look at alternatives. I can’t have some bureaucrat risking my mom’s health to cover her butt because of HIPPA. It is unsafe for residents to not receive meds and be locked out for safety. Certainly not the safety of residents. The potential liability they are taking on is astounding. UPDATE: I spoke with Megan and Stacy. They worked with me to allow my mom to take meds in the main room and they will show my mom how to get in the building when it’s locked. I was thankful for their responsiveness and look forward to my mom being happy with her living situation once again.

I recently had the privilege to visit this lovely retirement home and was impressed with what it offers. Firstly, stepping into this building, you don't feel like you are in a retirement home. It smells and feel more like a hotel. The services that were provided were specially designed and catered towards each individual where they were treated as VIPs of a hotel. They don't just sell you a place to live. It's a lifestyle in a safe and luxurious environment. It is modern, with high ceiling and extremely clean. There's a cinema, pool. Salon, gym, restaurant and great views.

The front desk person was very gracious in walking me to the elevator and giving directions. The help on the 5th floor were very professional and the atmosphere was quiet throughout the evening. Not all that glitters is Gold. The building is wonderfully decorated and it is an affluent area but be cautious of the facade it carries. This place can not keep staff and it is mostly agency. They are a revolving door. Unfortunately, Residents see many different faces over time to care for them. The little staff they do have is overworked, often picking up on other shifts to compensate for the gaps in time. This can lead to frustration, tiredness, and lack of quality care. Resident calls go unanswered for long periods of time. Management is extremely unorganized and just seem to be going through the motions. There are some good people in upper management but the unprofessional ones seem to have the authority. I would not recommend this place unless one is independent and capable of doing all activities of daily living unassisted ,
