We have had a great experience at Discovery Residence. I moved my mother into Discovery about 3 years ago. I was so grateful to find an affordable yet high quality residence that would provide my mother with a community. I live in New York.My mother is a resident at Five Star in Chevy Chase having just moved in this past February. Not only is Cindy a remarkable manager, but every single person from the dining room staff (Shanice) to the front desk to the maintenance staff are exceptional and kind! I was particularly Impressed with Benny at the front desk due to an incident that occurred one night. I could not reach my mom because her cell phone was going to voicemail and she never turns off her cell phone. I called Benny to ask if he wouldn’t mind checking to see if my Mom was OK. It was 10 PM at night. He immediately went upstairs to her apartment and called me after within minutes that she was fine and what we suspected was true, that the power had run out on her cell. Not only was he prompt and timely in his help, but his attitude could not have been more positive and supportive, knowing that her daughter who was in another state was extremely worried Thank you, Benny. You’re an exceptional person . I am so grateful for you and all of the staff who go above and beyond to help the residents at this lovely place feel supported! .

I’m very satisfied 90% of the time here at Five Star. I especially enjoy our indoor pool and water aerobics classes, and our knitting group. The dining room is well staffed with friendly, polite servers. Economically, Five Star is a rental community with no exorbitant buy in fees. This was very important to me when searching for a senior community 4 years ago.

I've lived here over 2.5 years, and I love it. For the most part, the meals are delicious and satisfying. The staff is practically family. There are many enjoyable activities. There have been some issues with transportation, but they seem to be clearing up. And, although I understand they want to hire the best, it's taking longer to replace essential staff than I'd anticipated. Still, I'm very happy with our decision to move here.

My wife and I have lived in Five Star Premier Residences for nearly three months and are very pleased. An important feature in choosing it was that they are a rental property and doesn’t require a huge upfront payment. Cindy Miller, the Sales Counselor, patiently worked with us and found an ideal apartment. On move in day we were greeted with a welcome sign on our door signed by staff and a platter of snacks and sparkling water. The following week we attended a welcoming dinner where we met other new residents and long term residents who gave advice. The staff are all very friendly and greet us by name. Many have worked here for years. The food is great and the chef is sensitive to dietary issues and responds to resident feedback. Services include weekly cleaning of our apartment and washing bedding. Residents are friendly and enjoy living here. It’s been easy to make new friends over a meal or at one of the many interesting activities. We’re grateful to be living here.

My mother moved into Five Star 1 month ago from Michigan. The staff and community both have been extremely welcoming and helpful. Cindy Miller, Director of Sales, Audrey McClain, Director of Environmental Services, and Emmanuel Cole, Head of Maintenance, and the rest of the Five Star staff have all been incredibly supportive and helpful, making my mother's move-in and transition to a new state and a new community as smooth as possible. To my surprise, my apartment’s doorbell rang on the afternoon of the day I arrived at Five Star. When I made my way past the stacks of unopened packing boxes and opened the door I was greeted by the friendly smile of a woman who introduced herself as Simone from the dining room and presented me with a huge plate of cheese, crackers, fruit and chocolates and a big bottle of something sparkling. What a perfect greeting! Best of all was the accompanying card, saying WELCOME HOME MRS. WAGNER. I immediately felt that I was indeed home. The card has been taped to my refrigerator ever since, a constant reminder that Five Star cares about its residents and wants them to feel they belong. The first contact with Cindy was extremely informative and right to the point. She helped me understand how the facility was run and what it could offer my 94 year old mother. Cindy, Audrey and Emanuel helped me and my family get my mother moved in to a beautiful apartment in a very short period of time. They made the transition absolutely flawless and my mother has settled in to this lovely community. My mom is 90 years YOUNG and this was a difficult move for her at first, she thought she was being forced to give up what she called her independence. We searched all over for the right fit and decided we wanted a place that felt at home -and local so we could visit her often. In the beginning there were a few concerns but when we brought them to their attention they were addressed immediately. This is to be expected - there are learning curves in life, and this was an adjustment for all of us. I am beyond thankful for the director Carol. My Mom said she doesn't think Carol ever go home and even after a long day at work, or no matter when she sees her or the staff, Carol makes a point to speak to them and call her by name and make her feel special. Thank You Carol and staff. What you do does not go unnoticed and you are appreciated! My mom is now very happy in her new HOME!

Five Star Premier Residences of Chevy Chase are an adventure and a half. My wife and I moved in here October 1 after having only seen our apartment on ZOOM! Of course we saw Cindy Miller, sales councilor, giving us a welcoming smile. She and my son Neal Orringer had helped to measure our furniture to fit in the spacious rooms we were about to rent. All fit to a T! At Cindys recommendation, we used Moyer Movers, and all our possessions arrived unscathed and for a reasonable moving price. Although we felt we were jumping into a void, with apartment sight unseen, we found a home of impeccable beauty. The community activities, especially swimming and the philosopher circle, interested us almightily. Our new neighbors always greeted us with a smile surprising us by setting no barriers whatsoever between them and us. They have an intellectual and aesthetic level comparable or superior to our own. There is always meat for conversation. There is not enough I can write to describe our surprise and delight with Five Star. Anyone who sets foot in this facility will at once realize that I am not exaggerating.

My mother was in Assisted Living at Five Star for 6 years before she passed away, and we were so happy with the caring nurses, the delightful activities that were always taking place there that my mom loved to participate in (thank you Jasmine for the constant outpouring of sing-a-longs, games, and exercising), and the comforts of her spacious apartment. My sister and I knew if we called one of the nurses on the phone, they would give us a full report of how my mom was doing. In fact, she felt like many of them were her best friends”they were that caring and warm. And it was not just their warmth that we could count on, it was also their attention to her health and comfort needs around the clock. My mother also loved to go down to the main floor and take walks on the terrace. She’d breathe in the fresh air, take in the beautiful surrounding woods, and listen to the birds singing. It was a treat for her to attend some of the concerts in the livingroom there and eat in the main dining room with its delicious offerings. It was always her returning to the comforts and caring of the Assisted Living floor that she loved the most. Thank you all for taking such good care of my mom since I lived so far away. I am writing to express appreciation and to sing the praises of Abi Chahi and his wonderful team. I had the opportunity to witness the February 14, 2021 COVID vaccination clinic in action. It was truly heartwarming to see the care, compassion and devotion shown by Abi and his entire team, including Angela, Susan, Audrey, Jazzie, Joe and Cindy to name just a few. Abi clearly cares deeply for every resident, as does his team. It was all hands on deck to ensure the safety and comfort of the residents and to ease their anxiety. They even went the extra mile and played soothing music in the Community Room as the residents waited their turn to be vaccinated, and to have a pianist in the Winter Garden where the residents were monitored after receiving their vaccination. They created a festive atmosphere, with Valentine’s Day decorations, a Valentine’s Day goody bag for residents and a beautiful Valentine’s Day cake. For these residents, who have been isolated from their families and loved ones for 11 months, it was truly a day to remember, enabling them to see the light at the end of the tunnel! In addition, I want to give an extra shout out to Abi Chahi for making it his mission and for leaving no stone unturned to make this vaccination clinic a reality so that the residents can be protected. No doubt Abi’s top priority is the best interests of the residents. As a resident's family member, I am grateful for that. THANK YOU to Abi and your team!

I want to post a shout out to the Five Star employees that are seemingly behind the scenes, but actually do so, so much for every single resident, and they are Joe and all the members of the Maintenance team. Even before my Mom moved in, Joe helped me make modifications in the apartment to make things easier for her and a little closer to the way she'd had everything set up in her apartment halfway across the country. This was a huge move for her and he wanted to get everything just right before he'd even met her! Since that day, upon her move-in and beyond to a year and a half later, the incredible Joe or one of the team has helped her with maintenance requests big and small. If they can't fix it at the moment, they are quick to follow up. They are always friendly and kind and work diligently to "get it right." They are thorough and professional, but more than that you can tell they really, really care. Whenever Mom or I happen to run into one of them in the building, they are always sincerely happy to see us and warm in their greeting. Maintenance wasn't actually something we even thought about in the different residences we toured, but when you think about it, it's one of the most important aspects of anywhere a person lives. The Five Star Maintenance guys are the best!

To Abi and the Five Star Staff: It is customary as we approach the end of a year to reflect on the past years' positive experiences. Looking back on 2020, I have many. One I’ll share. I moved to Five Star three years ago, from another Senior Community after spending ten years there, after my wife's death (my buddy of 67 years). Cindy Miller, my Marketing Representative, and the Marketing Staff made the transition a pleasant experience under the circumstances. Over the years, I felt the service and staff were on par, if not exceptional, in some areas from my previous community. That was until late January of 2020 when our new Executive Director Abdel Chahi arrived. Our services, menu, staff expeditiously improved. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Abi (he prefers to be called) quickly took a very pro-active approach that kept us safe and virus free throughout the critical period of the pandemic. The Five Star Chef and his staff served over 50,000 meals a month (3 meals a day with several menu choices) delivered to each resident. Respective of the social distancing, our dining room was closed. Several times a day, disinfecting the common area, cleaning and hand wiping elevators, hand sanitizer strategically placed, and the encouragement of Mask Wearing are just some initiatives Abi and the Five Star Staff have in place to "Keep Us Safe." I am excited to experience Abi's planned upgrades and improvements as we move into some form of normally. Living at Five Star has been a "Premiere" place for me to live and make an adjustment to my new way of life. Looking back, under the circumstances, Five Star has helped make it a Great Year. We found the Five Star Residence as an ideally located senior living rental building.. With well appointed apartments, attractive public spaces, extensive amenities and activities, very good food but most important a uniformly welcoming, gracious and caring staff. All of this produced a sense of comfort and safety that was threatened by Covid. My wife and I moved into the assisted living facility of Five Star in April of 2016, so we have had time to form more than an impression of the facility and its personnel. We rate them both very high. The facility has been well maintained, providing a "fresh air" feeling throughout. Most importantly, all the personnel are oriented toward the residents being favored customers, and treated as such, rather than as wards, the feared position of many retirees moving into such "institutions." The food at Five Star is non-institutional, designed by a highly inventive chef who provides varied weekly and daily menus with amazing new daily soups The day is filled with activities, ranging from entertainment to learning sessions to lectures and concerts. Lectures by experts in a wide variety of subjects are given at least weekly. The music and singing are exceptional, provided by up-coming and mature stars. "Mix and Mingle" sessions promote friendships. There is an art studio, exercise room, a swimming pool, a library, a wellness center where health and some medical services are available, and even a meditation room. Registered nurses and health attendants are available night and day, and are subject to your call. An in-house store makes essentials available, but bus service is provided to major shopping centers. The grounds, adjacent to the Columbia Country Club, are spacious and beautiful, inviting walks on the grass field or along the stream. Five Star is located close to Bethesda and downtown Washington, making their many attractions readily available. The facility provides bus service to many of these. The building and Grounds are well-kept. Landscaping is excellent at all times of the year. Best of all is the Lifestyle Staff who, with some ideas from the Program Committee, plan many interesting trips and events with transportation available so all who are interested can go. Housekeeping also does a great job. I should also add that residents are fortunate to have the Five Star Rehab and Wellness Center headed by Kathleen Andreone enabling residents to have in-house rehab when needed. The fact that this is a rental establishment is why I chose it over one where you have to buy in.

I wanted to let you know how fantastic Mercedes was in helping us clean the kitchen when we were there last week. What an awful job and she just dug right in and made that kitchen sparkle!!! She thoughtfully took out all expired food and asked us if we wanted to throw it away ( we did!) Every inch inside and out was cleaned. A wonderful feeling, and not a fun thing to spend an afternoon doing. I tried to tip her as it was above and beyond normal duty, and she politely refused. I wanted to be sure you knew how much we appreciated her!

We celebrated my in-law's 100th & 98th birthday last Sunday at the 5 Star Residence of Chevy Chase. Chris Long was the catering manager. He and his staff did an outstanding job. We had 65 people in the Community Room. The affair was well organized and the food was terrific. Everyone had a wonderful time. Samara is always pleasant and helpful. Many of the kitchen staff came by throughout the party to wish my in-laws well. Jasmine came and sang "happy birthday" and some other family favorites. It was a warm, loving, happy birthday. Thank you to all those who worked to make the celebration a success!

Hi, Susan -- Just wanted to let you know how successful our NIH Camera Club workshop was last night -- and how the Five-Star staff made it so. From your finding the right tables to use for the demo, and your clear parking instructions to the participant with a van, to the front desk folks who helped us unload our equipment, to the facilities personnel who helped cool down the room we used -- everyone was consistently helpful and so pleasant! When we pulled up to the main entrance to unload, a fellow came right out to help us, before we could even ask. While my husband went to park in the garage, I said I'd wait for him at the front desk. But one wonderful man on duty insisted to taking the two luggage carts to the art room for us. Another staff member efficiently found two extra tables for us, as we'd found out there would be more participants than originally registered. Two different staff members came in to be sure we had everything we needed. The only small glitch turned out to be the temperature in the room. Though the thermostat was set at 70 degrees (its lowest), it was 74.5 when I came in and just got warmer all evening. A helpful man from the facilities department came to check and found all the diffusers working correctly and the thermostat correctly set. He was extra-nice to bring us a big fan to try to cool off the space. He mentioned that the HVAC contractor would have to look at the system and make some adjustments / repairs. So...once again, on behalf of the NIH Camera Club, thank you and the Five-Star staff for all your help in making our workshop a success. Best, -- coco

My parents have been residents at Five Star Premier Residences for 7-1/2 years. They are 92 and 91 years old. They started out in the independent living section of the building, and for the past nine months, they have lived in the Assisted Living section. While in the Independent Living section, they did not need a great deal of care for the first five years, and were able to be truly independent, enjoying their lovely two bedroom apartment and the many cultural activities offered by Five Star. As they grew older and less well, their care was assisted by the use of priviately hired aids (found with the assistance of the Five Star staff). In the past year as their health and mental well being deteriorated, we decided to move them to the Assisted Living section where they could receive help as needed 24/7. This was definitely the right move. The Assisted Living staff is excellent and caring. My parents are not easy people, and I am truly amazed at the incredible patience of the staff. They handle with caring efficiency the true medical emergencies and smaller day to day crises. While the facilities are excellent, it is the staff of Five Star that makes it so special.

If you're seeking a well-appointed independent senior living apartment for your parents, this is THE place to be in Chevy Chase. The staff is friendly and accommodating. They communicate clearly about what, where, and when things need to happen as you work to transition your loved ones to a new home. The administrators have accumulated a mountain of experience with these kinds of transitions for families. Many of the management team have been in the business for decades, which helps them help you. We have just finished re-locating our loved ones into this building and we're all happy with the outcome. Moving is tough on anyone, and it's even more emotionally fragile when working with senior citizens and their lifetime of precious things. The team at Five Star made this transition smooth for all of us. Jill and her sales team have the most compassionate approach with families considering this decision. Angela and her management team are cool as cucumbers, and make you feel like you and your family are the only family in the building. Brandon and his culinary team are passionate about preparing delicious and healthy food for a population with specific dietary needs. Kathleen and her physical therapy team provide EXCELLENT training so that your loved ones can adjust and move around with ease. I'm certain that the rest of the staff I have yet to meet live up to these high standards also. Without reservation or hesitation, I recommend adding this property to the top of your list when considering accommodations for senior independent living.

Chef Brandon - As a former kitchen steward, I know how hard kitchens work to produce fine meals. You and your team produced a fantastic luncheon yesterday for our 70 Members. Our great thanks. The seared tuna was a great hit with all. Thanks for the imaginative menu and fine delivery. One Maryland tablemate signed up for the Club on the basis of the fine luncheon! Chris Long and Susan Bick - The arrangements in the dining room and auditorium were perfect. The round set up for 8 for the speaker’s table worked very well. We had a very fine single animated conversation with all at the table participating actively. The auditorium which Susan turned sideways handled the 90 plus with ease and actually brought folks closer to the speaker. We did not need the mikes in Q & A as the room was somehow smaller with the lateral set up. Please pass our sincere thanks to all your team members. I have been a resident of Five Star Premier Residences of Chevy Chase for 8 and a half years, and have loved every minute of it. From the minute I walked into the building I felt at home and comfortable. I was greeted warmly by the staff and everyone I came in contact with. I told my daughter, when she asked me how I liked being here, "It's like being on a cruise ship". In my opinion in order to really get into the "swing of things" it is best to be involved. And from the moment I decided that this was the best place for me I became involved in activities. I ran for the Resident Council and became Welcoming Committee Chairperson. Then I helped to reorganize the Jewish Cultural Group and became Chairperson, arranging for speakers and organizing different topics for the meetings. When I thought it would be nice to have a singing group I spoke to our wonderful Lifestyle Director Susan Bick. Susan helped advertise the start of a singing group and voila! we had a singing group, and it's still going strong. Susan has been very helpful and cooperative. When another resident and I asked to form an acting group Susan helped arrange that. Our Five Star Playreaders Theatre is now rehearsing for our 7th year of performance. In fact, there have been times when I have emailed Susan Bick at 11:00 p.m. thinking that she would answer me when she received the email in the morning, and instead Susan answered right after receiving it that late at night. I am also enjoying writing articles for The Clarion, the residents' monthly newsletter. I also enjoy attending Friday night services for Jewish residents. There also are Catholic and Protestant services for all residents. I also attend lectures, movies, operas, in the Community Room and exercise with the wonderful exercise classes. There is something for everyone here. That's why I am happy and content living here. This is home for me.

"My father lived at Five Star for three years. He decided he wanted a set up different than the nice enough apartment he had in Friendship Heights, where he had lived for ten years, after the death of his wife and the sale of his Bethesda house. It was lonely and he sought to get out of cooking! Once he moved into Five Star, he loved the fact he could be solo in his apartment doing his favorite activities there, like computer work and watching Netflix, but joined others , dressed for dinner in the dining room, where he loved the food and being served! He appreciated the kind, good hearted wait staff and management. He volunteered in the library, took classes in poetry and short story writing, and since he loved to sing, joined chorus with it's seasonal presentations. He even grew to lead a meditation class! He felt surrounded by smart, interesting people with which to form friendships. He attended the interesting array of lectures and movies, too. He swam , used the gym, worked with the physical therapist when needed. He took advantage of the car for hire for medical appointments after he gave up his own car last fall. All in all, Paul Drummer was living in the nicest way possible in his nineties, and if needed could have arranged for an aide as well. He was a upbeat kind of guy and often commented on how lucky he felt to be there. His three kids, living far away in NY, TX and CA were all confident he was happy in a great set up and are grateful for Five Star for being there for our Dad! Thank you Five Star!

My uncle had a very positive experience living at Five Star. He was able to maintain his independence in his own spacious apartment while benefitting from the many convenient, in-house services provided by caring staff. Because we live outside of Maryland, we truly appreciated the comfort of knowing he was in a safe, well maintained residence where he also could enjoy the companionship of the other residents. During our visits we were pleased to notice how 5 Star's personable and responsive staff always seemed to know the residents by name. We recommend it for other families seeking options for senior living in the area.

My father has been enjoying independent living at the Five Star, but when he had a big birthday coming up (95!) we first thought of taking him out. Luckily we decided to use the Private Dining Room at the Five Star. Chris Long set it up beautifully -- the menu was perfect. Sumaya and Almaz did a wonderful job of executing. The room looked great, service was excellent, food was beautifully presented (and tasted great too). The Four Seasons could not have done it better. Five stars for Five Star!

Five stars are unacceptable, 6 stars is more appropriate. When I arrived for my appointment with Frederick the Maintenance Manager I was late, but he was patiently waiting for me. I was in a good mood and had a smile on my face. I expected 3 scenarios for his tour of my new apartment. Yes, we can do that. No, we can not do that. And yes, we can do it but it will cost a lot of money. After 25 minutes of discussion about my new apartment, I was so incredibly pleased. In fact, beyond category. If everybody at Five Star is as wonderful as Frederick (with 6stars), it will add 20 years to my life and I will gladly pay the rent.

My mother has lived at 5 star for almost a year. Its been great for our family because of its location. Her apartment is very nice and she has made friends. BUT, the dining experience is inconsistent. Quality of food is not always good. Service is often poor and slow. Sometimes residents have to wait 30-60 minutes for a table at dinner time. Management is not responsive to resident complaints. And, safety is an issue. They often don't check who is entering the garage and one garage door has been broken and left open for several weeks.

My experience with the Five Star Premier Residences of Chevy Chase has been stellar. For many years I knew that I wanted to live here when the day would come to sell my home. During the months leading up to my transfer here, Mary Lawrence and Cindy Miller of the Sales Department offered endless support and suggestions for my long list of needs and worries, including transport companies, professionals in interior decoration, access to Cultural Opportunties in the DC area, availability of medical aid and physical therapy. They were available to answer any question no matter how small, and to this day continue to be interested in my well being. I am proud to invite my friends who do not live here, to join with me in the beautiful dining room. Although I no longer own a baby grand piano it gives me enormous pleasure to listen to others play, including my son-in-law!! I wish that I could name everyone who adds sunshine and color to my days, from the concierge staff, the servers and kitchen staff, to the housekeeping and maintenance people. I don't have to stay in my room ..... I can join friends for an afternoon cup of coffee and chat, I can have my hair done, lounge in the library, or walk outdoors. Other days I can watch a film, participate in a dance class, go swimming, exercise with Pilates or yoga! There is no reason to give up the joys of my homeowners life....the transportation services here take us to see the cherry blossoms! One year I went to the ballet every month! When I look back over the years I have been here, I see smiles and feel not only well cared for, but loved.

My grandparents have been living at the Fiver Star for over 10 years. As of recent, their mobility and level of care has changed which makes it harder for them to go on family outings. My sister and I wanted to throw a birthday party/anniversary celebration for my grandparents and reached out to the Five Star. Susan, Chris, Sena, and Albert, did everything they can to set us up in the card room, cater the party, and throw a beautiful celebration for my family. We couldn't be happier! Although I cannot speak to what it is like to be a resident at the Five Star, I want to thank them for helping us throw a wonderful party.

I moved my mom up here from Fla. to be closer to me. The apartment she's in is perfect for her and she has organized it to fit her needs. She has met some lovely women, playing bridge a few days a week, canasta and keeping busy with activities they offer. The people there reach out to the newbies to make them feel welcome and you can be as busy as you choose to be. Overall, I'd say it is a good experience for mom and comforting for me knowing she is surrounded by new friends.

When my aunt and I entered Five Star Premier Residences of Chevy Chase, her first words were, "this feels like home." I knew then it was the place for her. The following month, she was a resident and continues to enjoy it to this day. She moved to Five Star in April 2015, and has not regretted her decision. What makes this place so special? Without a doubt, it is beautiful. I call it a resort for senior citizens minus the beach. 🙂 The restaurant is like a quaint 5-star eatery. The menus are amazing with unique dishes for all. The staff members are phenomenal and attentive to the residents' needs from the director to those who do housekeeping. Turnover rate is low with staff members who have been there for years. One worker shared, "We are like a family." And they treat the residents as if they were family. If one is considering a place that provides outstanding service where children do not have to worry about their family members, Five Star Premier Residences of Chevy Chase is the place for them. There are activities throughout the day. Transportation is made available as requested. However, there is plenty of secured underground parking for those who have a car. Since Chevy Chase is at the doorstep of Washington, D.C., residents are able to participant in events within the city. The residents are energetic with many coming from professional careers. Do give Five Star Residences of Chevy Chase a try. I recommend it highly! Dr. G

My wife and I moved here in December 2010 and have enjoyed it very much. In the first place, the building is much like a top-notch hotel. The landscaping is beautiful, as is the interior decorating, furniture, floor cover etc. The food and service leave little to be desired. We have variety in the menus; the specials change daily. Our chef, Brandon Williams has a great imagination and we are often surprised with his recipes. We have a delightful group of servers who really try to make every meal a pleasant experience. Our apartments are ample and the views from many of them look over the Columbia Country Club/ We have many activities to keep us busy if we want to be, such as movies, lectures, concerts, card games, book clubs, trips (we have our own 28 seat bus) etc. For those who want to be involved, we are always seeking volunteers to lead our clubs, join our Resident Council, sing in our choral group and help with many other activities. We have a wonderful staff who, so efficiently, keep our building functioning smoothly and our 300 plus residents very happy. Our sales department is always ready to welcome you and will give you a tour; if you are really interested they will probably offer you a short stay in our guest room to "look us over"
