After visiting several senior living communities, I chose Monticello West for my mom because they offered an enhanced assisted living option, which was supposed to accommodate residents needing two-person transfers. I was also impressed early on, especially with Nan who was responsive and helpful in answering all my questions. Things started off okay, but one issue showed up pretty quickly. My mom uses a wheelchair and needed help getting to and from the dining room. Staff would take her down for meals, and when she was ready to return to her room, she’d press the button on her fob for assistance. On multiple occasions, she was left waiting alone in the dining room for over an hour. This was frustrating and embarrassing for her. There was also a staff member who pushed my mom to do more than she was physically capable of. Something happened (I was never told exactly what), but I was informed that the person was written up and instructed not to go back to my mom’s room. Additionally, Nan stopped replying to my emails, and messages to other staff were often ignored too. We had an initial meeting where I was told I’d be introduced to all the department heads. Only a couple of people showed up; apparently my mom wasn’t considered important enough for the full team. The director, Tom, was not present and I had no contact with him until I gave notice to move my mom elsewhere. To her credit, Sandra, who managed my mom’s floor, was always responsive to my emails and phone calls. However, about a year into my mom’s stay, she called to tell me they could no longer meet my mom’s needs. She said that my mom now needed more than two people to assist with transfers. I asked how much time I had to find a new facility, and she said, About two weeks. That’s not what the contract says, but at that point, I didn’t want my mom to stay somewhere that couldn’t or wouldn’t care for her properly. My mom later told me they’d recently hired a bunch of new staff who weren’t well trained, so sometimes it would take 3 or 4 of them to transfer her. They would also gather in her room to chat with each other. Ironically, just a few days after Sandra’s call, I saw one of the experienced caregivers transfer my mom by herself, quickly and with care. When I asked her how she did it, she smiled and said, Patience. I found another facility and scheduled my mom’s move for a Sunday. Since her birthday was the day before, I asked about reserving a room for a small celebration. I was told that due to Covid concerns, no rooms were available. That was fine; I told my mom’s friends we’d meet outside on the patio to play it safe. Several of her guests, most of whom were senior citizens, told me that Laura Rooney (the activities director) raised her voice at them and told them they weren’t allowed to be there. She also raised her voice at me. I explained we were outside and following all the rules, but it didn’t seem to matter. The whole thing left a really bad taste. After we moved my mom out and cleared her room, I asked when I’d receive the refund for the unused portion of the month’s rent. I mentioned that I had accidentally taken her fob and would return it as soon as I could. Tom implied I wouldn’t be refunded for the days I had the fob, which seemed petty, but the facility eventually processed the full refund. Still, it wasn’t the kind of support I needed during such a stressful transition. To be fair, some staff were wonderful. Kam, TT, Cynthia, and Willis were kind, respectful, and truly cared about my mom. The maintenance guys and housekeeping team were always polite and helpful. Thankfully, my mom is now in a facility that truly values her. They care for her with patience and compassion. When friends visit, they’re welcomed, not scolded. Phone calls and emails are returned. When my mom needs help, she gets it within minutes, versus hours. She’s happy now, and that makes me happy too. Looking back, I wish I’d installed a camera in her room at Monticello West from day one. If you have a loved one there, I strongly recommend you do.

Nan has just been incredible helping us quickly navigate moving our friend from a rehab facility to what we hope will be a tremendous improvement in his care. I did not need to look at any other places after meeting her and learning about the types of services they offer, the full time nurse -24 hours a day- and the enhanced memory care plan. Also, the many long time employees speak very well for the company. The daily menu is impressive too. I feel relieved that Nan has helped us find a good fit. We are Thankful ™

My sister Jeannie has been a resident at M. West since October of 2018, at first in an apt. on the regular 2nd floor, where her (mentally challenged) daughter Susie was allowed by M. West to live with her. Then, after 8 months, due to Jeannie’s ever-increasing dementia, she was transferred to an apt. on the 3rd floor’s Memory Care unit, where Susie was restricted from any longer living with her mother. (Susie moved to California to live with her sister, as the family could not afford the extra expense of Susie living separate from her mother here in Dallas.) Jeannie has lived in Memory Care ever since, a current total of 3 years now. Now, and even before Jeannie’s Memory Care time, for me the heart & soul of M. West’s excellence has been, and still is, its superior STAFF. No matter on which occupational level, M. West’s employees habitually exhibit friendliness, compassion, & a complete professionalism. The turnover ratio at M. West has historically been, and remains, extremely low. This obviously indicates contented employees. It was also one of the major factors in the family’s decision to choose M. West. [Research Bulletin: If you are searching for a home for your loved one, try calling A Place for Mom, a free, friendly, wonderful service that narrowed down our search from the whole phone book to 7 strong selections, from which M. West rose to the top for us.] From maids, aides, laundry ladies, janitorial staff, building maintenance workers, food services staff, etc., to nurses, department directors & assistant directors, and administrative staff, the overall attitude is the same: We are here for our residents, whatever their needs may be.’ To limit an overlong review, let me focus on just one example out of the possible many, the 3rd floor’s Memory Care unit. From director to floor-cleaner, again the attitude is friendly, down-home, & accommodating. The current Director has strong health-care credentials and exhibits an openness, tolerance, & patience with my several questions which I find refreshing. But my highest praise is for the now long-term Life Enrichment (or Activities) Coordinator. She is wonderful. Her lively, active, yet sensitive personality radiates fun, love, and caring toward all her residents. She insists on the importance and essential-to-life functionality of MUSIC (of all kinds) - rock, jazz, classical, even religious-service choir/ instrumental music (on T.V.). When the 3rd-floor elevator door opens, you are liable to enter a musical wonderland, which often prompts you to get the heck out there & dance (which I sometimes do, as I also often touch kind hands with some residents). The residents in wheelchairs may not be able to emulate this, but I think they enjoy it all the same. Lastly, the Coordinator continues her creative quests for additional physical/social activities that she feels will engage her residents (even if they don’t necessarily show this engagement in a visibly outward way). I think she’s right. Just as almost any debilitated resident will exhibit a sweet appreciation for even the slightest attention, so I believe, along with the Coordinator, that the sensual appeal is the key to proper engagement here. The senses “ sight, of course, but hearing, touch (and taste & smell, thus the good food at M. West) as well “ are the main avenue to a genuine, humane connection with those whose minds & bodies may have been diminished, but whose feelings (and other sensings) remain strong enough to respond, perhaps in the quietest (and even invisible?) way, to the promptings & stimulating soothings/excitement of an appeal to the emotions via the senses. In conclusion, all this is what I encounter when I make my at-least weekly visit to see my sister. As my younger daughter as a teenager liked to phrase it, I think that, relatively speaking, the 3rd floor’s Director, Life Enrichment Coordinator, super-supportive staff, and the residents themselves (metaphorically) simply rock the house. I give Monticello West retirement & Memory Care home my highest recommendation.

She has been able make new friends, stay active and maintain her independence, while having a little help when necessary. The staff is so friendly and attentive, that many have become like family. The location is great and is convenient to all our favorite places we like to frequent for family outings with our mother. My loved one has been in the facility since October 2021 and I am very pleased with the Monticello Community, the positive support from the entire staff has been exceptional. I was unsure of the interaction of the facility since I live in another state. If I had any hesitations/reservations, they were quickly alleviated after my first telephone communication. I can truly unequivocally state they have addressed all my concerns in a timely and professional way. I was able to visit and that even reassured I had made the right decision for my loved one. The staff was great, and I must say that the facility decor is very tasteful and elegant. Every week I have contact with the providers on my sister's floor and it has always been a warm and engaging exchange.

My 85 year old father needed to be in an Assisted Living facility due to his dementia. We moved him to Monticello West and November and have been very happy with the care he has received. All of the employees are very friendly. Michael the manager is very good about communicating with families about what is happening each week. They have been very responsive to any requests we have. It was important to us our father would be in a facility that could continue to care for him if his needs increased. That is possible since they also offer memory care. I would definitely recommend Monticello West to anyone looking for a facility for a loved one

The staff and the residents at this convenient and upscale assisted living & memory care residence make it a welcoming home for both newcomers and the family of the residents. My father and I both like the food and the dining experience is lovely with sit down service or delivery to the rooms. My father has memory and mobility issues but likes his independence and the care providers and administration work hard to keep track of him and keep him safe and engaged in the community. The nurses are also a godsend as managing his medication was confusing and their extensive expertise, organization and communication have greatly improved my quality of life while assuring my dad has just what he needs. Go and meet these folks, you'll be delighted as I am.

At first I was just impressed with the look, set-up and location of this place. But, starting with the first day we moved mom into a studio apartment the people have become the star of the show. I was amazed so many of the staff know me when I walk in to visit my mom. So many of the staff have been here for 10+ years and they are quick to share that fact and proud of it. I can't imagine the complexity of running a place like this or the difficulty of keeping your staff up beat and ready to help. I think they also do a great job in communicating with family about what's going on at the facility... not just events that we can take part in but even more serious concerns like someone getting COVID or stepping up precautions to deal with a situation.

My mother has been living at Monticello West for about 5 months now. This was a very difficult decision as I am sure it is for every person going through this transition. After visiting another facility down road I was very upset as it was so obvious that the staff and the residents were not happy. When I walked into Monticello West it was the exact opposite, the staff was smiling, the residents were happy and engaged. Residents were greeted by staff by their name and with a smile. I knew this was the right choice. My mother moved in three weeks later. She thanks me every week for finding this place for her. She absolutely loves it! She participates in all the activities they offer and I know she is in good hands. The executive director Michael provides regular communication with emails with updates, which is SO appreciated. The nursing staff will call if needed keeping me informed of any concerns that may arise. Nan was the one who provided up with our tour initially and it is obvious she loves her job. She really made sure this was going to be a wonderful place for my mom. Honestly, this was the best decision I could have made. So grateful!

My father who is 90 has lived here for 8 months. He moved here during the Pandemic and I must say, the care and caution for the move in during this virus was most careful and cautious. Sadly, for most seniors, this pandemic has been a lonely and confining time but the main reason that my Dad moved here was to be close to me so I could visit often. During this Pandemic, I have been able to visit my Dad most every day. I was tested for Covid every 2 weeks and was an Essential Caregiver so able to visit inside Dad's apartment as well as take him on drives to Sonic, feed the ducks at Lakeside Park, etc. Most importantly, the care and attention that Dad receives is so very special and exceptional. The employees are very dear and caring and have a kind heart for seniors. The meals have been delivered to his room each day during the Pandemic but the dining room is just now opening so meals can be eaten with other residents. His room is cleaned each week as well as laundry service and medicine administration. Each floor has Care Aids that know the residents and take care of their needs. My dad is in the Assisted Living level and we have been very happy with the care that he has received. I feel very fortunate to have found Monticello West and am comfortable that my Dad is receiving wonderful care and attention.

We moved my mother into a large studio at Monticello West at the beginning of the month. She’d previously lived in a lovely 2 bedroom, independent living complex for the past nine years in a different city. To say the first few weeks were challenging would be the understatement of the century. The staff kept my sister & I supported & continually reinforced all the reasons we’d selected Monticello West. They assured us that this is typical of the transition to assisted living & for anyone at this stage in life. Within a few weeks the world was right again. She loves the food & the new things that had perplexed & frustrated her became positives. Monticello West has been a perfect assisted living facility for my Aunt. Two months after moving my Aunt into Monticello West, the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world. The director and staff have done an extraordinary job of keeping my Aunt safe and cared for. In early 2019, I had researched Assisted Living facilities in Dallas for my elderly friend. I had met Mike, a MW community liaison, who fully answered all my questions, showed me around and provided requested documentation. He periodically followed-up without that nagging hard-sell which is a total turn off experienced with other facilities. Fast forward to December when my friend finally agreed to move to MW. Nan, the head community liaison, moved a few mountains with the initial resident review/approval process and the actual move-in as did Mike, who was great helping churn through the paperwork. They both were also responsive with a few things after we got settled. Overall, Monticello West is a well run, clean, reasonably priced facility with caring & compassionate staff. The residents, including my 94 year old friend, are well cared for. The support team on the 4th floor are tremendous. I should note that the MW nurses mostly/only order & dispense medication and incontinence supplies which we didn't really comprehend until after the fact - we came to understand that's how it is in most AL facilities. There's a marked distinction to skilled nursing support (e.g. Rehab) so be aware of that if you're transitioning from one. However, the nurses were extremely helpful, courteous and friendly when related to their specific duties. As expected in these facility types, the food is bland, but The Mansion is only a short drive for those who turn up their nose at MW's cuisine. The only major knock I would have is those damn elevators. 🙂 Seriously, Monticello West is worth checking out if you are researching Independent Living or AL facilities.

Monticello West When I asked our 49 year old son who is recuperating from a traumatic brain injury what he liked best about living at Monticello West, he said, Reliability. Meals are right on time and I like that I have choices about what I eat. I like knowing that my laundry will be done on Sunday, neatly folded and returned to me. Baths and meds are efficiently scheduled. My room is cleaned by a most cheerful lady. I like knowing that the good humored staff is so versatile that there is always someone available if I need help. Employees may have different titles, but everyone’s job description must include pitching in when there is apparent need. People come here to work and stay perhaps because the atmosphere is upbeat and welcoming. Residents seem to be the nicest, thoughtful people, who encourage each other and cheer me on as I learn to walk again with brace and cane. As realtors always say, Location, Location, Location! I like that my family is close enough to walk the dog to my apartment or help me walk short distances on the Katy Trail. If I have an emergency or some scheduled therapy, Baylor is a quick trip down Central Expressway. Monticello West is not a resort, but, for me, it is a safe, comfortable and hospitable place to live. When my sisters and I toured the Monticello West, the manager (Nan), was very helpful and knowledgeable about everything and we decided this was the place for our parents to stay. Nan supplied us with all information, that we needed to help us make our decision for our parents. The Monticello West is a very nice place. Our parents entered the Monticello West on the 4th floor. We couldn't have asked for better care and affordable rates. Residents are strongly encouraged to attend activities ranging from interactive games to crafts, ice cream socials, movies, exercise, holiday entertainment and more. The room is constantly maintained and clean. The there is a 24/7 nurse on duty and resident's personal safety ranks high among considerations. The staff treats the residence with respect and care. Our father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and our mother was no longer able to care for him at home; her health was declining, too. Monticello West provided support and education for us as we tried to navigate this difficult transition for our parents. We are grateful for the care and concern they have given both of our parents, working hard to accommodate their every need. My dad is 77 and was moved to an assisted living home that was less than desirable. I live in LA, so I had 36 hrs in town to find him a better place. Luckily, we were referred to Monticello West (call Donna at Senior Living Specialists). Nan and Michael answered every question (and I had a lot!) and were so helpful. They worked with our budget, made sure his dialysis trips were covered and were able to move him in within days. His room is a clean, bright studio, and the facility itself has been beautifully remodeled. They even loaned spare furniture and installed internet - above and beyond what was required or expected. My dad is very happy and comfortable living there, so that gives me peace of mind. Thank you, Monticello West!

5.22.19 Update: My mother seems to be happier with her care now. I am not getting as many phone calls. MW did get her a new "call for help" fob when they said they would. I hope things continue to improve. . 5.14.19 Update: I met with the Executive Director. Promises were made as to the care of my mother in the future. I will be more than happy to post a better review when it is earned. The last couple of days have been better. 5.12.19 My mother has been resident in Monticello West since March 6, 2019. Her unit had been recently remodeled. MW let us move in without telling us the unit wasn’t finished (no hot water to sink, plugs promised not installed, etc). In addition to that, her care has been terrible. She spent one night on the floor after a fall. No one came to check on her even after she pressed her call fob again and again. It happened again last night. She pressed her call fob at 3:15am and no one came to help her to the bathroom. By the time she got to the bathroom she was a mess. She didn’t get back to bed until 5am after getting herself cleaned up. No one ever came to help her. I am extremely upset with MW. After my mother spent the night in the floor (only last week) MW management promised me that will never happen again. Apparently nothing could be farther from the truth.

My mom has been a resident of MW for 4+ years. She has received daily care and genuine interest in her well being. The staff has taken a personal interest in my Mom and her care/interests. I would highly recommend MW to anyone that is seeking genuine care and respect for your aging family member with dementia. The staff on all levels are the best of the best.

Our father entered MW's 4th floor assisted living at age 96 after a slight stroke. We couldn't have asked for better care and affordable rates. Despite the intense demands of the resident population, the staff aims to keep everyone at their personal peak of health, happy and intellectually stimulated. REsidents are strongly encouraged to attend activities ranging from interactive games to crafts, ice cream socials, movies, exercise, holiday entertainment and more. The property is constantly maintained and clean. The staff is vitalized by their work with the elderly whom they love and respect. They tailor the meals to the individual's likes and needs. The resident's personal safety ranks high among considerations. Given my long distance commute, I checked in daily. To watch the staff in action helps you appreciate the gift it takes to do such responsible work. we felt comfortable with our father in their care.

We moved my in-laws to Monticello West a year and a half ago. We initially thought they would be able to live together, but unfortunately, my FIL's dementia progressed and we ended up with him in the Mayfair level (memory care). Both the independent living and the Mayfair level have surpassed our expectations. The staff is so caring and helpful. As my FIL's disease progressed, the staff continued to treat him with the utmost kindness, care and respect. The memory care team is terrific and they work hard to keep their residents engaged. There are lots of daily activities. I encourage everyone to take a look at Monticello West.

It has been my experience that caring for an aging loved one can be a challenging and often thankless duty. Between the struggles of one’s heart and mind, as well as questioning if you are doing the right thing for the person, whether it searching for a new residence or daily chores, that journey can often be very discouraging and tends to feel like a nightmare. My review of Monticello West is long overdue. I was initially captivated by the splendor of the new, shiny Turtle Creek property; however, I quickly realized that I had made a huge mistake. Regrettably, my decision was one that went on for over two years. As I began to reevaluate my decision, I revisited Monticello West and other properties to seek out a better living situation and care for my grandfather. After meeting with the Monticello West property team, I realized this facility should have been my first choice when seeking care for my grandfather. We were fortunate enough to be able to make the move and over the last 10 months, I have been very pleased with the living conditions and realize that Monticello West was the right choice. Since my grandfather has moved to Mayfair, his quality of living has improved and his living conditions are always well kept, from his clothing to his apartment. He is also interacting with the other residents, attending events, and says he loves the food! I have not heard one complaint from him and I am overjoyed by the lifestyle he has adapted to so quickly. It speaks volumes that I regularly see the director of Mayfair interacting with the residents during lunch outings, trivia games, and special holiday events. I also reach out to the director from time to time to check in, and she is always very helpful. Unfortunately dementia/Alzheimer’s can be unpredictable and we had some behavioral issues with my grandfather. When these unfortunate incidents arise, I find the leadership team at Monticello West extremely understanding and willing to work with me on plans to address the behavioral issues. I am so grateful for the team at Monticello West and Mayfair memory care!
