My mom was transferred to Brookdale from Brookwood Hospital for rehab after a serious wreck. She had to wear a back brace to do her rehab due to compression fractures. The rehab staff did not know how to put the back brace on, and would barely try to do it. Then, they would say her time was used up because they took so long with the brace, or at best, they gave her 15-20 minutes therapy. During the time she was there, she got pneumonia and a UTI. This caused her (age 95) to go downhill, and we had to put her on hospice. She was told by one staff member NOT to push her call button. Most of the staff, not all, seemed miserable at their jobs and would come in with their hands on their hips and would say,What do you want. We were extremely disappointed in the management, and they did not follow through to help with problems. We paid $14,000 per month after Medicare stopped paying, and we did not get our moneys worth. After three months, we moved my mom to another facility which costs half as much, and the staff is warm and loving, and take much better care of my mom. I would not recommend Brookdale to anyone who loves their family member.

Brookdale University Park is a JOKE! DO NOT move your loved one into this memory care facility. Constant turnover in staff (so nothing consistent for dementia patients who NEED consistency) and because of the constant turnover, no one knows the patients and their individual needs thus creating errors and not performing the job they are paid to do. After a little over a year at this facility and being there DAILY to make sure things are done for my mom, the staff were still not taking proper care of her (medications being given that had been discontinued, not being able to take a FASTING blood sugar, not assisting patient with putting hearing aids in and then taking them out and placing in the charger and in the end LOSING the hearing aids, not assisting with routine showers and dressing, not checking in on patient every two hours as they state when you sign up), etc. Then after giving a 30 day notice, we moved mom out promptly to a MUCH BETTER facility. Brookdale not only charged mom the FULL monthly amount but since notice was given on the 6th of the month, they also charged for the next month until the 6th. It would make sense and be understandable IF they had not moved another patient in during that month and obviously "double dipped" those monthly rental fees. How can a memory care facility take advantage of dementia patients when they already charge a ridiculously absurd amount to begin with? I can tell you this, Brookdale is NOT the place for your loved one with dementia!!!

Completely thrilled and amazed at how professionally and lovingly this facility has welcomed my difficult to live with Dad. He is thriving there and removing him from the death trap of his house and bad habits not taking effective care of himself and living as a loner has been completely reversed by his voluntary decision to move to Brookdale University - Birmingham. He loves the food. He loves the drumming circles, he has made friends, his health has dramatically improved by eating healthy food and having regular care and attention from the staff.

My mother is in the skilled nursing at Brookdale. I have received so much help, guidance and assistance from the entire staff from social work, nursing, CNAs and remedy medicine. They have been willing to help work through every situation that has arisen with her care, and every staff member treats her as if she is their own family member.

The staff at Brookdale took wonderful care of my 78-year old mother during her 3 week rehab stay. The Brookdale staff was friendly, caring, and attentive to all my mother's needs. The physical and occupational therapists did an outstanding job with my mother so much so that she was discharged home earlier than expected. A special thanks to the folks at Brookdale!

The staff is pleasant, but lacks skills and tools needed to do their jobs. He facility is nice and clean. It is well cared for. But again the maintenance staff lacks the tools needed to do their jobs well. The system for tracking work requests was antiquated when my relative was there, a few years ago, and work requests were often lost. The worst thing is the food. It is not well prepared, by today’s standards. It doesn’t taste good and lacks nutrition. Over cooked vegetables and large amounts of carbohydrates dominate the selections. Fortunately my relative could afford to provide her own food and didn’t get much from the cafeteria. Maybe that’s how they keep costs down, by making sure many of the residents provide their own food. The management really needs to provide adequate training and tools for their staff and bring this facility into the 21st century.

My mother-in-law has lived here for several years now. Residents are provided with many activities to choose from. They often go on "field trips" coordinated by the staff. Everyone working here is friendly and happy to help...

Brookdale is a wonderful place to rehab after knee replacement. The rooms are spacious, private bath, good food and snacks, therapy personnel are upbeat and pleasant as you work toward becoming familiar with your new knee. Tiffany Rothenstine is the Social Services Director. She continually communicates with all patrons through their stay to be sure all their needs are being met in a timely manner. I plan to return in 2018 when I have my right knee replaced.
