Reviews Merrill Gardens at Barkley Place

Most of the staff is amazing. The apartments are airy with lots of windows. Makes the area feel bigger and airier Wilma a server on the dining room is the most caring woman. She always listens carefully and does the best possible to accommodate our requests. They are in the process of upgrading with new hurricane windows and removing the popcorn ceilings in the common areas. The choice of carpeting is questionable. Laminate flooring would look much nicer and then eliminate a lot of staining. The women’s bathroom on the first floor needs to be upgraded. Cindy Thompson the General Manager is easy to talk to and responds to any problems as soon as possible. I would recommend this place

I’ve lived here for approximately three years, and I can honestly say there has never been a day that wasn’t filled with smiles, kindness, and good cheer. Merrill truly feels like one big family. Every member of the staff is gracious, welcoming, and always willing to help. No matter what you need, someone is there with a smile and a solution”whether it’s in the dining room, at the front desk, on the maintenance team, housekeeping, or our caring leadership staff. Their dedication to the residents is evident every single day. It’s not just the staff who make Merrill special. The residents have created a wonderful sense of community. The friendships, camaraderie, and many social activities make living here both rewarding and fun. I also think it’s important to recognize how well this community is maintained. The building is clean, beautiful, and continually updated. It is safe and secure, providing peace of mind during hurricanes and other outside events. I am truly grateful to call Merrill my home and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a warm, caring, and vibrant community. Ruth Scott

I'm a single man & enjoy the carefree retirement lifestyle at Barkley Place. They provide 3 meals a day, weekly housekeeping including changing my sheets; and activities I enjoy like card games & dominoes. The location is great - just a short bike ride each morning to the local YMCA for group exercise classes with friends. I no longer have to do yard work or worry about condo maintenance & repair. No HOA fees!

I’ve enjoyed living in Barkley Place for over 4 years. The staff is friendly, caring and willing to help when needed while still respecting resident’s independence. If needed, the maintenance team is very responsive and handle requests promptly. I also appreciate the daily opportunities to socialize through activities and events with no pressure to participate if I just want to relax. Overall, it’s a quiet, comfortable place with a welcoming atmosphere that makes it feel like home.

Looking for a place, a community in which to live either independently or with assistance? Merrill Gardens in Ft Myers is a place for you or for Mom, Dad, kith and kin. Within two days of our move in, ALL of the servers in the dining room, at the front desk and any of the managers knew us by our first names. The food is good and a lot better than most. In Port Charlotte (Grand Villa) I had few options on the menu which meet my dietary needs as the main course. Options included 3 meat meals or a grilled cheese sandwich. Breakfast is a buffet with loads of options and, their liquid scrambled eggs are prepared in such a way that you would swear they were freshly cracked. The gardens here are my refuge along with the Monach butterfly sanctuary and a pool available 12ish hours a day. Make that call now!

My sister has lived at Merrill Gardens for a few years now, and I couldn’t be happier with the support and care she receives here. It is a smaller community, therefore she knows everyone, and everyone knows her. The staff are all so nice and are always willing to listen and help in any situation. Brian, the, GM has been a wonderful asset to this place and I would not hesitate to tell anyone to check out Merrill Gardens .

My mom moved into Barkley Place in May 2021 and it has been the best decision. She is so happy. She participates in all the activities and has made friends easily. The staff is incredible. Many of the staff have been there for years, which made us feel comfortable knowing the staff is happy working at Barkley place too. We didn't even consider another facility.

My dad was a resident at Barkley Place for a little over a year. He enjoyed every minute that he lived there, loved the staff, enjoyed they happy hour and the other activities provided and the food was always so delicious. Just like all the other residents at Barkley Place, he was always made to feel important and that he could contribute to the community around him. As a lifelong executive for higher education, the last thing he needed was to not feel like he had purpose. The general manager and her staff do a great job of engaging the people that live at Barkley Place. My mother-in-law is now living at Barkley Place and couldn’t be happier. The moving process was seamless and all of her questions have been answered in a timely manner. The staff takes time to check on her and she feels very loved there. I’m so thankful that there are people like Tina and her team to care for the seniors in SWFL. Barkley Place is an asset to our community. They are the best!
February 2022
My Mother has been at Barkley Place for 7 years now and she couldn’t not be happier. She celebrated her 100th birthday recently and I truly believe the care she has received there has played a part in her longevity. As she is wheelchair bound she requires some additional care and the staff so is careful and understanding. I am there fairly often and see firsthand how staff knows her well and understands how to best meet her needs. As you might imagine breakfast, lunch and dinner are very important to those in assisted and independent living centers and mom raves about the food at Barkley Place. As I do eat with her on occasion and I would agree the food is very good. Dining room staff knows exactly what she drinks and her other favorites. The Executive Director Tina Keating is one of the most dedicated people I know when it comes to their job. I’m so impressed that she has managed over last 2 years with Covid to get Barkley Place thorough with minor issues. I whole heartedly recommend Barkley Place if you are looking for a place for a loved one.
February 2022
Mother has been very content living at Barkley Place during the last seven years and the treatment she receives from the staff. She has especially enjoyed the meals and dining with friends. During the COVID lockdown period all meals were served in her apartment and she adjusted well to the experience. We particularly commend corporate Merrill Gardens on their intermittent informational videos by Tana Gall and the in-house and personal communications sent to us by Tina Keating, Senior General Mgr of Barkley Place.

The atmosphere at Barkley is very warm and caring. It is nice to see the residents enjoying themselves.

As a medical advocate I often refer my clients to businesses for support services and sometimes in making that hard decision to have to move from home to a community. I have had the privilege of working with the Barkley team for the past ten years. My level of respect and trust for this team is unshakable. I have worked with them on several cases and have never been disappointed in the resolution of challenges put in their path. From their handling of each residents unique family dynamics, heath challenges and sometimes making the hard decisions that a resident needs a level of care that is best provided by another community partner, this team always puts the residents best interest first. Each resident and their family becomes part of theirs and are embraced with the love and respect each deserves. In today’s challenging times of managing COVID in a community and having to make decisions regarding loved ones aging, you can put your faith and trust in this community. Little extra bonus to the kitchen staff, the grilled cheese sandwiches are on point!

The staff was wonderful. I was only able to be there during my grandmothers final days, but the staff did a really great job of keeping my mom and I company while going through the dying process. As difficult and sad of a time as it was, you couldn’t ask for better people than the staff. Special thanks to Michelle, Jo, Dan, Jessica, Erika, Tina and Shadow. This crew really did a wonderful job caring for not only my grandmother but us, her family, and for that I am grateful.

We moved into Barkley Place 3 months ago and have never been happier! The rooms are beautiful. The courtyard is outstanding! The food is wonderful. If we choose, we can participate in numerous physical activities that are healthy. Many activities are just plain fun! The ability to do PT right in the facility is wonderful! Several doctors come to Barkley Place, so the need to go to them is no longer necessary. Barkley Place has eased the difficulties of getting older. This was one of the best decisions that we ever made. “Peace of mind” is wonderful. Mary

My mother, Shirley Reaves is interested in moving to Barkley Place. She has a friend Roxanne that stays there. Shirley moved March 3years ago from Ft. Myers, to be near me in Dillon SC. She is now staying at Scotia Village, Laurinburg, NC. She has never been happy here, she wants to move back. She needs medication assistance, she is needing more help than Independent Living. I believe Assisted is what she needs. But open to suggestions. Thank you. Patti McInnis

After my mother died we looked for a place my father could spend his remaining days in a comfortable friendly environment. We searched most of the Senior Living Places in Fort Myers and decided Barkley Place was the best choice. We were right, the staff was great, food was good, enough activities, my father made many friends during his time at Barkley Place . Had it not been for the COVID virus essentially making prisoners of the Senior Citizen population my father would still be having a great time with his friends at Barkley Place. I used to visit him every Friday we both looked forward to the time, the staff always greeted me like I was a member of their family and kept me informed whenever my father had issues. I would recommend Barkley Place to anyone looking for a Senior Living Facility that does not look, smell, or act like a nursing home, but a great place to live with a very attentive staff. My Thanks to all the Staff.
February 2020
Barkley Place is a wonderful place to feel comfortable with placing a parent or loved one. My mother lived there for four years, and the staff watched over her as if she was their own mother. My husband and I spent many holidays as my mother’s guests for dinners and/or entertainment. There were always great activities happening for her to enjoy. When my mother passed away, the staff couldn’t have been more helpful or caring. Kathy Balota (daughter of Irene Andritsch)
November 2018
My mom is in assisted living there. Not very responsive to problems or opportunities for improvement. General manager is a blamer and does not receive feedback well. Never their fault when problems arise. Frankly, would not let nursing staff watch my goldfish , let alone a loved one. You asked for my review, you got it!!
September 2018
My dad and stepmom have lived here and has been an enjoyable experience for both of them and those of us visiting them. The staff always seems to go out of their way to make everything as pleasant as possible. Will recommend Barkley Place to anyone looking for either independent or assisted living in SW Florida. Do yourself and your folks a favor and check this place out before making that big decision..
