Reviews Sunrise at Hunter Mill
July 2024
Sunrise of Hunter Mill in Oakton, VA is the best assisted living accommodation our independent 88-year-old aunt could get, after she was treated at a skilled nursing facility and required additional physical therapy services late last year. From the moment the Director of Sales invited me to tour this location and have a look at its available bedrooms, to my initial introduction to Hazel, Head of the Care Team, and ultimately the warm welcome of Executive Director Isha, Sunrise of Hunter Mill has proven to be the perfectly safe and happy place for my aunt. It is also fully staffed with highly qualified, professional and friendly personnel who always make us feel very welcome as part of the Sunrise family. My aunt is truly lucky to have very kind and caring persons around her who attend to her every need 24/7, 7 days a week. The premises at this location are always nice and clean, full-course meals and snacks are regularly served, and a daily list of activities is posted in the lobby for ease of recall and voluntary participation by residents, family members and guests. A monthly calendar of events and activities are also provided electronically in advance. As family members who live more than 600 miles out of state, we are always concerned about my aunt's safety and well-being when she used to live alone and started having difficulty maintaining her own house. At Sunrise, we are always informed by the Care Team and in-house nurses of her whereabouts, especially by Hazel, Maggie, Anne, Sumi, Janet, Adama, Angelica, Manisha and Jean, her main physical therapist. I also sometimes directly receive photos and videos of her enjoying her stay, as well as formal communication of her monthly overall health, medication and wellness progress. We likewise truly appreciate the consistent updates through the Sunrise Smile portal, with anecdotal and individualized memorable messages by Emilie, of the many activities my aunt and other residents enjoy, including vivid photos and encouraging videos diligently posted by others -- Hazel, Isha, Miguelita, Amelie, Adama, Jonathan and Chef Mario, to name a few. What appeared to be a temporary facility arrangement, while she was recovering from a bad fall at her own house, has become my aunt's longer-term home for the past seven months. It now feels like her primary home as she's always eager to go back to Sunrise when we've taken some time enjoying the outdoors or simply spending the entire day outside the facility when we visit her. For others who may be in a similar situation with their loved ones, I would recommend taking that first step of touring this particular location at Sunrise of Hunter Mill, as an alternative. Sending my heartfelt thanks to the entire Sunrise Family for taking very good care of my aunt day in, day out for the last seven months -- my aunt is safe, healthy and happy in her current home!

I highly recommend Sunrise at HunterMill. The staff is exceptional. They are caring, understanding and gentle with my mother. Even the administrators take genuine personal interest in her. The facility is kept very clean. The medical staff is attentive to her health needs. The menu is tailored to the individual residents needs. The people at the front desk always greet me with a smile. 6 years ago my son asked me if I would like to go to Sunrise Hunter Mill. Lyndsay and Joe , picked this place from a friends advice. I was hesitant before but I'm glad I said yes because over the last years has been difficult for me and a big help to me from the care team . I had never painted before for the first time in my life I painted here at Hunter Mill with the help of the AVC. In 2021 Hazel asked me if I want to have my own exhibit to show all my artworks and share it with the Residents. I enjoyed arts and crafts and I believe Hunter Mill will make a good place for most people in their older age. I appreciate all the Team and caregivers in this community.

The Staff, Therapists, nurses and AIDS are all Diligent and extremely caring and gentle - The residents are friendly and it's like family - The food is really good too. Also lots of fun and helpful activities each day with celebrations on various holidays and many volunteers and others coming in like students sharing their talents and others as well for singalongs ( with Randy) and weekly worship services - Pastor Doug We really enjoy Sunrise and glad my wife can be here We are thankful and blessed and Than Isha and the entire Sunrise team

We are very pleased with the care our aunt has received at Sunrise of Hunter Mill. Every staff member we have interacted with has been kind, patient, competent and dedicated to providing the best care possible to meet her needs. In addition, the facility is well maintained as well as our aunt’s room. Most important to us is when we visit each staff member knows our aunt’s name and the details of her life and she always says they are all so kind. We especially appreciate Sima’s contribution to our aunt’s care. We own our own business so we know how challenging it can be to find quality staff but this Sunrise facility is staffed with only 10/10 care givers. We feel so blessed to have chosen this home for our precious aunt.

A Volunteer's Perspective on Sunrise of Hunter Mill: From my introduction to Reminiscence by a friend who invited me to meet her mother and my deciding that residential living was in order for my Alzheimer's diagnosed husband, I have enjoyed building relationships with residents and staff throughout the community. My now deceased husband received compassionate care during his residency and then I was literally challenged to become a volunteer by a coordinator. Eleven years and several months later I am both pleased and grateful to be serving as Community Deacon and facilitator of weekly "Through the Bible" studies in both Assisted Living and Reminiscence/Memory Care. Before Covid-19 struck in March 2020 I was a daily presence taking on such tasks as care for dogs and cats who lived among the residents. Daily walking of the current dog—three over the years--freed up staff for other duties and enabled me to get familiar with adjacent neighborhoods and meet neighbors who might be searching for the care Hunter Mill provides. I made sure that Casanova had food and water and a clean litter box and at the end of his feline life I joined two staff members for his final visit to Hunter Mill Animal Hospital. There were tears aplenty for this long-time and well-love cat who lived in Reminiscence. I enjoyed taking our dogs and cats for veterinary checkups and other visits as needed. Nala, the young cat our Executive Director adopted from the Fairfax County Animal Shelter, was an energetic delight but sadly in May 2020 she died and I was invited to be present for her burial. I look forward to our adopting more dogs and cats when the time is right. I began a Bible study almost by accident in June 2017 and it continues to this day. It fluctuates in numbers as members ascend to Reminiscence or to God's presence to await the return of Jesus Christ. During the pandemic interlude I brought notes and articles to read and church bulletins for residents. The Activities and Volunteer Coordinator retrieved them from the community's entry door and carted them through the hallways. When I was invited back for a day by our current Executive Director and a return to Bible study in September 2020 I was thrilled. Occasionally we go on pause due to a Covid positive test but that's become more and more a rare occasion. Not long after, I was invited for another day for a program of my choosing and thus came Through the Bible study in Reminiscence. With assistance from a Life Enrichment Manager and care managers the activity room is alive with residents, as we respond to gospel music, prayer, hymn singing, and a lesson from the Bible. Perhaps, too, residents will be again worshiping in sanctuaries of nearby churches, a Sunday outing that brings a special blessing. Tuesday and Friday gatherings with residents bring joy to my heart and permission to bring church bulletins on Sundays enables a quick check in with them and with staff. Perhaps the day will come when I am welcome to drop by on any day. As Community Deacon I am available to everyone for prayer, a few words of Scripture, smiles, and quick conversations not necessarily faith-based. On a recent Sunday I was able to assure the sons of a Reminiscence resident that I had been present to her during her days of decline, lifting her in prayer, Scripture recitation, and gently holding her outstretched hand in the reality this visit would likely be the last. And they were pleased to know she had been present for Friday Bible study when she was able. When I retired as a public school teacher I thought lesson plans were past tense. Writing them for our Through the Bible groups gives me opportunities to still practice the skills of writing and engaging participants. Volunteering in meaningful service brings social engagement, personal connections, the discipline of a schedule, cognitive exercise, and a healthy outlook toward making a difference in the lives of others.

Our father has been at Sunrise Hunter Mill for 2 years. He was warmly welcomed moving in, and the staff always attentive and engaging. Because of it's small size and because they focus on assisted living only, Sunrise Hunter Mill does a wonderful job making the facility a true home for those who live there. Additionally, as our father's dementia progressed, his transition from assisted living to memory care was seamless. We've been very happy with his care there.

My dad has been here 4 years and the staff has been amazing especially on the 3rd floor where he lives. They have been so attentive, caring, providing great quality of life and activities for him.

My 92-year-old mother-in-law was discharged from rehab before she was ready to return home, so we chose the Oakton Sunrise facility for her to continue her recovery in their road to home program. Sadly, she was only there a month before she passed away. During that month we were frequent visitors and consistently witnessed the patient and administrative staff offer loving care and great attention to detail. Little things that added up like the chef taking the time to make sure she got food she was accustomed to eating despite it not being on the menu. The staff got to know her quickly and were able to make her comfortable in every possible way. They were able to decern and respond to her needs without her having to relate them to the staff. The daily activities provide much needed and enjoyed social interaction as well as physical and mental stimulation. While she was only there a short time, it was long enough for us to see and feel the quality of the facility. The physical environment is clean, warm and inviting with residents out and about throughout the day enjoying one another's companionship and activities. The suite style room set up is ideal for privacy while allowing for interaction with a suite mate on an as desired basis. Having had recent experiences with several rehab and nursing facilities, there is no way to compare them because Sunrise is so far above every place we previously experienced and/or learned of through family, friends and reviews. We could not have scripted a better situation. While our hearts were heavy because she was not able to be in the house she called home for three quarters of a century, our hearts were lifted knowing that she enjoyed the last month of her life among qualified staff, new friends and caring people who made her feel so much like she was home that she never again asked to return "home".

I can’t say enough about the staff at Hunter Mill. From the moment we moved my father in they have welcomed him with open arms. Everyone is friendly and professional and very dedicated to the residents needs. My Father has embraced all the activities Sunrise offers. The food is great and the staff is the best. Great home away from home for my father. We have peace of mind he is safe and well taken care of. Sunrise does a outstanding job updating families on their loved ones daily activities. We couldn’t be happier with our choice to move to Hunter Mill.

My mother has been at Sunrise of Hunter Mill for two years and we have nothing but good things to say about everyone there.

My Mom has lived at the Sunrise Hunter Mill for the past two years. She has adjusted so well to the community and has made some very special friends at the community. Her care management team is excellent and I’ve been very pleased with her level of care and the wonderful warmth and true family environment Hunter Mill provides. You feel welcome the moment you arrive at the concierge desk. The staff is very polite and very dedicated to provide the best in making their residents comfortable and feel at home. Thank you everyone at Sunrise Hunter Mill!!

I love the reminiscent floor at Hunter Mill! The staff is wonderful and they treat everyone like family members. I feel that my mother is well taken care of. It was not an easy decision for me at first to transition my mom from our home to another residence where she can receive better care and Hunter Mill has proven to be the best decision for us. My mother is so happy and it shows!
November 2022
My MIL was a resident at Sunrise Hunter Mill for over 8 years, passing away there last week. We were so happy with her care! Isha, the Director is such a loving person. She originally worked on the third floor and was so good with my MIL. Very loving and energetic. Sima, the Reminiscence Coordinator , kept us informed over all these years. Her staff was always welcoming and friendly when we visited. When my MiL was passing away, many of the staff came in to say their goodbyes. Some with tears in their eyes. Lots of hugs and kind words. They constantly told me that she was like family. They are all very caring with the residents. Too many to name! We are so grateful for the care my MIL received and would recommend Sunrise at Hunter Mill to others considering this home.
November 2022
Sunrise Hunter Mill (SHM) is a very special place because of their staff - who are TRULY remarkable. I first gained insight into SHM when my son volunteered there. He talked about how nice the staff was and how much they cared for the residents. My mother suffered a stroke a number of years ago and my father, despite severe arthritis, cared for her for years. It was obvious that my father wouldn't be able to care for my mother forever and I began looking for alternatives. I approached the Director of Sales and she couldn't have been nicer or more patient. She understood my father's reluctance to relinquish my mother to SHM's care and always made me comfortable by providing in-depth answers to my questions, providing tours for my father and me and carefully explaining every aspect of SHM's care. When the time inevitably arrived when my father was no longer able to care for my mother, I moved my mother in and the time has flown by since then. It's hard to put into words the extraordinary level of sincere interest and care provided by the caregivers. The nurses stay on top of all my mother's medications. The nurse practitioner reaches out to me regularly with questions about my mother's care. The personal care staff are patient, kind and understanding with my mother's limitations. The occupational and physical therapists have made strides with my mother's mobility I didn't think were possible. The activity directors DO NOT STOP! My mother (who's mostly confined to a wheelchair) has been taken on local shopping trips, scenic drives and on lunches to dining spots in the area. Additionally, there is ALWAYS something going on at SHM whether it's group stretching exercises, painting classes, karaoke (something my mother had never, ever, ever done before and now loves), cooking classes, musical presentations, games and even bible study classes. Also my mother loves the food. The building is nice and the location is great...but what makes SHM amazing is the incredible staff that obviously and genuinely cares about doing the best job they can.
October 2022
getting in was a little chaotic, but once the dust settled , Sunrise of johns creek was top notch in the care of my Mother. These people genuinely care about their residents . I could not have picked a better place for my Mother to spend last leg of life. I will always be grateful for everything they did.
November 2021
Sunrise of Hunter Mill has our highest rating - our family's experience at this location can only be described as outstanding. The facility is warm, bright, clean, and inviting. My father, who resided on the reminiscence care floor, always received the most loving, respectful, and attentive care. He was always relaxed and comfortable while he lived here - no doubt due to the wonderful staff members and the happy atmosphere of the home. Particularly important to us was when we were advised after my father's hospitalization that hospice care was our only option. Sunrise encouraged us to bring him back to his "home" so he could be cared for by people he knew and trusted throughout his remaining days. They made it possible for family to visit him as much as possible while still adhering to the necessary Covid restrictions. We know that Covid has been a challenge for everyone and recognize how seriously the team at Sunrise has taken their precautionary methods throughout - so we also appreciate the accommodation they were able to make for us during this difficult period. Sunrise at Hunter Mill made our father's last few years comfortable, happy, and full of joy - Thank YOU!
October 2021
My husband lives at Sunrise of Johns Creek. The caregivers are the best we ever had, warm and caring. I appreciate that in these difficult times where not enough help is available, they always make sure that the caregivers on the memory care floor are their employees, not from an agency. Even I feel at home there.
July 2021
My mother lived at Sunrise of Hunter Mill in Oakton for 3.5 years. She greatly enjoyed her stay. The staff at Sunrise gave my mother the best of care and truly made her happy. She was meticulously bathed and dressed. Her hair and nails regularly done too! Prior to covid the residents were routinely taken out to lunch and long drives. During covid the staff did everything they could to keep everyone safe. Sunrise probably had the fewest cases of covid nationwide. They locked down immediately and made sure the residents did not contract this deadly disease. The staff also made sure my mother had many activities. She looked forward to the many art and bingo sessions and sang along with the other residents everyday before mealtime. I have no doubt that the staff at Sunrise gave my mother many extra years of life! Thank you Sunrise. From the grateful daughter of Luba from Cuba
June 2021
Through a process of interviewing-touring facilities and references from friends I converged on Sunrise at Hunter Mill to move my 94 yo mother into in August of 2020 (during Covid). She had been at an out of state facility and then in a Nursing Facility for a bone fracture. Being at Sunrise has revitalized her. The staff is truly caring and has accommodated her needs for assistance with activities of daily living while keeping her in contact with her out of state friends and church by Zoom and arranged for concerts and scenic bus trips. They have done everything they could within the rules for us to stay connected with her during Covid. I would highly recommend this place to my friends as my friends did for me.
June 2021
My husband has been at Sunrise at Hunter Mill for almost 4 years. He first needed the care and assisted living experience but is now in Memory Care. The staff here are incredible. They love each one of their residents and do everything possible to make their stay a peaceful and fulfilling one. My husband will live the rest of his days at this facility and I cant think of a more caring place for him to do so. All of the staff and especially those responsible for his care are pretty amazing!
June 2021
I cant say enough good about Sunrise of Hunter Mill. The staff, activities coordinators, nurses, care givers, Med. techs, maintenance, EVERYONE- has been so warm and welcoming. They make my mother feel at home!
June 2021
Both my Mom and Dad spent a year at Sunrise of Hunter Mill. The staff is a very caring bunch of people who did a good job taking care of the residents during the pandemic. It goes without saying that this was a difficult time for all involved but Sunrise was able to make it the best experience possible.
June 2021
Team work is definitely practiced here at this location. Each employee has a common goal to provide a safe, healthy, fun, caring and positive experience while living at Sunrise. My brother has been a resident for three years. The food is very good here, we LOVE having access to a doctor, a podiatrist, a dentist, a physical therapist and a hairdresser right at the facility. As we are slowly coming out of the COVID phase it is exciting to see the facility open up and activities resume off the premises.
June 2021
The Sunrise Team is extraordinarily kind and responsive! I had to move my mother into the Reminiscence Floor in the midst of COVID; I was a mess. But the Sima, the Wellness Coordinator, held my hand through the process. She promised to take excellent care of my mom, and she called me regularly with updates to ease my anxiety. My mom has adjusted well to her new environment, and especially likes her caretakers and the activity coordinators, Kitty and Hazel. My mom receives excellent care, and I am so appreciative of Isha and her team.

I have visited many Sunrise facilities in the Northern Virginia area and like most, they provide a wealth of compassion and care for the sector citizens in our communities. The Sunrise of Hunter Mill is no different than the others. My visit here was very pleasant and the staff the same. The rooms for the seniors are not too small, but comfortable with the aneurysm of a small apartment of likewise accommodations. This location was quiet and file with a caring staff on premise. Ideally, when a family decides they want to place a senior loved one into an assisted living facility they are looking for a location like the Sunrise at Hunter Mill located in Oakton, VA.

From the moment we walked into Sunrise Hunter Mill we knew it would be a wonderful place for our mom to live. We were greeted with sunny smiles, a warm environment, upbeat music, and an abundance of activity for the residents. Our mom had dementia. As the disease progressed the staff at Sunrise educated us and worked with us through the transition of Assisted Living to the Reminiscence Level. Without their expertise we would have been so lost. The transition to the Reminiscence level was seamless after a well thought out and formulated plan to execute the move. As the months went on the disease took over her beautiful independence and she required constant care. The team upstairs along with Vitas hospice, as well as those who helped care for her on the Assisted living level worked together to make sure her transition to lifes end was as comfortable and peaceful as possible. Sunrise Hunter Mill is staffed with patient, competent, loving, caring professionals. They have huge hearts and helped our family immensely through an extremely difficult end of life process. They became our family and cared for our mom as if she were their own. We are forever indebted to Sunrise Hunter Mill. The gift the staff gave us ensuring our moms dignity was preserved as she faded away is priceless; 5 starts doesnt even begin to give enough due credit to this facility!
April 2020
My brother has been a resident at Sunrise of Hunter Mill since the middle of June due to a stroke. The therapists and staff did a remarkable job and he went from a wheelchair to walking with a cane in five weeks. Unfortunately he had a second stroke and needs 24-7 care. I am so grateful he is at Sunrise. Because of the amazing staff, from the directors to the aids I am able to have peace of mind. In the beginning I thought I had to be there all the time to make sure he was cared for. It wasnt long before I realized how kind and caring the entire staff is with all of the residents. They go well beyond what their job description calls for. I want to thank everyone at Sunrise for helping me and my family get through a difficult time

So far our favorite facility. They knew the drill. Rooms are tiny and barely any closet space BUT that was outweighed by obvious good healthcare and motivation.

I had a good tour of this community. It was a lovely experience, and everyone was very kind. The community looked great, everything was very nice and clean. The staff was helpful, and informative. We found a community that was closer for us, but our tour of this one went well.

My sister is taking some time to adjust with her move to this community. However we are comfortable with her move here. We know she is safe, and in good hands. The staff is wonderful, and very kind, and helpful. She looks good when I go to visit, and is receiving good care. They are very willing to work with us in helping her get adjusted. This is a lovely community, and I would recommend it.
