Supporting a loved one as they transition into memory care or assisted living is often a challenge. For my aunt, the move had to happen quickly; fortunately, the team at Ciel of Shorewood took this in stride and helped every step of the way to make the transition go as smoothly as possible. The clinical and administrative leaders have been flexible, accommodating, available and candid “ always answering questions and following up on things as promised. As important, during my aunt’s first month at Ciel, we’ve found the caregiving and housekeeping teams she interacts with daily to be kind, skilled and attentive. I’ve been learning from them how to more effectively communicate with my aunt as her dementia worsens. They’ve become instrumental in helping her live with dignity during this difficult time. The other day, I took my aunt to the in-house hair salon at Ciel to get her hair cut and styled “ something she hasn’t been able to do in months. Afterward, we stopped in the lobby to join residents from the memory care and assisted living for a happy hour and listen to some live Irish music. It was one of the best afternoons my aunt and I have had together in months “ an experience made possible by the team at Ciel.

HarborChase has many amenities as well: Caring staff, professional medical care, creative chefs and enrichment activities! Best of all, friendship with residents!

This is a tale of 2 HarborChase's. The best thing about HC is the local care staff; the cooks, servers, front desk attendants, CNA's, nurses, activities staff, therapists and maintenance men. Amazing, kind, caring individuals. When my mom died at HC after 20 months as a resident, seemingly every care member came by to say goodbye to her and offer me comfort. That is a testament to their character. Mom developed a community there with the staff but also with the other residents and it was vitally important to her happiness having left her previous home and community due to her illness. Her death was a huge loss to the HC community and they made sure I knew that is how they felt too. I was and am immensely grateful for that. Further, I want to give a shout out to Brighton Hospice, who took tender care of mom in coordination with our family in her last months. The building is beautiful and the food is good, exceptional even at times. There are many activities and they are well run and engaging. The main common spaces are clean and well appointed. However, this belies the truth of the rot that exists beneath. You don't sign a contract at this place after touring it not understanding that it is a corporate entity, for-profit and that it will be expensive. But the services rendered did not justify the cost. It is chronically understaffed and a revolving door of employees. There were rarely sufficient servers to attend to the meals. Mom did not get her laundry done or her room cleaned in in accordance with her lease agreement. Mom didn't require the personal care attendants/CNAs except in emergencies but every resident who did that I spoke to felt there was not enough of them and it delayed or threatened their care, comfort and safety. As a highly experienced healthcare professional, I found the amount of ambulance calls per the number of residents alarmingly high suggesting an inability to prevent, recognize and address deterioration in resident condition even accounting for their age and baseline health. In my opinion, these problems start with the administration and corporate mandates. HC had 3 executive directors in mom's short time there and the position was empty at time of her death. You don't need to be a corporate genius to know that unstable, ineffective leadership will not end well for the organization or its constituents. With the exception of Kristin, the former asst. ED, I was very dissatisfied with the accountability and responsiveness of the local leadership and the C-suite. Their organizational leadership communication style can best be described as a combination of stonewalling and silence. Residents meanwhile are required to sign what amounts to a NDA. When there are complaints, there is a sham resident council for that but it goes nowhere. I know as my mom was its leader. Based on my experience, the HC policy for external email communications at the corporate/admin level is that they generally shouldn't be answered. When I followed up with phone calls, I was either not allowed to talk to the decision maker, not called back despite requests to do so or there was a significant delay in doing so. In the unlikely event that they do call back with a phone message, they don't leave anything that addresses your concern. You just have to call again to a desk that is unmanned and leave another message. Because this happened to me across numerous calls locally and to corporate, it leaves me to logically conclude that this is a deliberate, lawyer-like policy to never say or write anything of substance that can be discoverable when you have raised a concern. In the end, after 3 months, I got relief from the debt they owed mom's estate, but they intentionally delayed payment, obfuscated their policies and generally frustrated me at every turn. Not what you should do to a grieving son, a resident or to anyone. Corporate/admin only caring about the almighty dollar= 0 stars. Local care staff= 5 stars.

I would definitely recommend Harbor Chase. The nursing staff and caregivers are outstanding. The care they provide is phenomenal. They work as a team. And I was taught there is NO I in the word TEAM. The front office staff is as professional, passionate and caring as any I have experienced and worked with. The care and compassion taking care of the individual residents and the family members cannot be taught it is within those individuals that work there . I will continue to recommend Harbor Chase to anyone who needs loved ones taken care of.

I've sampled the food at Harbor Chase before and the chef always prepares wonderful food. Yesterday's ribs and chicken dinner raised the bar. Everything was fresh, tasty, and unique. I think I will retire early to enjoy the food and the company of Valerie and Faith. Thank you for your hospitality.

We chose Harbor Chase of Shorewood for the location, size and beautiful design. The attention to detail in the bistro and the vintage photos make this facility stand out. From Assisted Living to Memory Care the patience, smiles and willingness to listen have been so important for us as a family. Mom loves her community of friends and that all staff knows her name and is willing to help.if needed I have such appreciation for all the staff. Everyone has been there to listen and will try to improve anything that is brought to their attention. It is a cozy and safe home for mom now which is all that matters.

We chose Harbor Chase for my father. It's great location-wise. The space is very nice. The smaller size appealed to us after him being in a very large facility that lacked in several areas. He is enjoying his days and living again after our mother passed away. He is able to participate in many activities and even gaining strength in therapy. The staff is good and know they are lucky to be able to care for our father.
