Mariposa is a perfect blend of large scale community amenities, and small scale community attention. When you walk in the building you’ll notice how beautiful the communal areas are, and if you take a peek at their activity schedule, you can see it’s full and vibrant. It can be challenging to find a community that feels intimate while competing with the resources of a large retirement community. I find that this is accomplished at Mariposa. But the cherry on top is the staff. They make you feel Iike family, because when you move into this community, you do become their family.

I toured the facility today, and I was impressed with everything. As soon as you walk in, the staff and residents make you feel welcomed. The building is meticulously well maintained and the food is amazing!

We really loved this place when my parent moved in. There had been consistency in directors, the cost was aligned with other facilities in the area, and the staff seemed to genuinely care. Through covid, services began to fray. Food was inconsistent, and we would find that additional services that we were paying for would be skipped here and there. Around the facility, little things were being missed too, like the bistro not being stocked with fresh coffee or water, umbrellas missing from a messy interior patio, the theater wasn't working for weeks, and internet goes down for days at a time. Fast forward to mid-2022, and almost all of the directors have turned over in the past 6-8 months. Residents are stressed by the lack of communication or continuity. Then a letter for a 10% increase in rents, and charges for 'amenities' that were previously included by the facility. Mariposa claims that it is to bring the facility in line with others in the area, but it actually puts them above many others.

Mariposa has taken great care of my father. He is one of a big Mariposa family. The staff greets him by name, on a daily basis; he enjoys delicious meals, and is tired by the end of the day with the many activities he can participate in - his favorite being Bingo. It is nice to know that he is not only loved and cared for by his own family but also by the Mariposa Family.

After living independently for years, in February 2019 my elderly mother was faced with the reality that she could no longer live on her own. We looked at a number of assisted living spaces in the Santa BarbaraCamarillo area, but when we found Mariposa, we immediately knew it was the place for her. I met with the Community Relations Director, Nicholas Begane, who treated me to a delicious lunch and gave me a tour of the gorgeous and thoughtfully-designed building. At that point Id toured a number of AL facilities in Arizona, on the East Coast, and in California, and Mariposa was far and away the loveliest in every respect. It is such a warm and inviting place - thoughtfully designed to accommodate the needs of seniors, but it has none of the cliched trappings of an old folks home. Its light, airy, modern, and it provides amenities that make you feel at home and cared for in the most humane way. Beyond aesthetics, design, wonderful food, and great activities (including on-site physical therapy), what sets Mariposa apart is the staff. Simply put, they are stellar human beings who actually care about the well-being of their residents. It was clear to me from the get-go that the Mariposa Executive Director, Peter Bonilla, prioritizes hiring only people who put humanity first. From the beginning, Nicholas Begane has been our guiding angel. He made what is typically a tough transition for many seniors (especially my mom) as smooth as could be, and didnt just stop once wed signed the contract. To this day, I know that I can contact Nicholas with a question or an issue, and hes right there to help. And this goes for all of the Mariposa staff, from Peter, to Dory, Denay, Naomi, Muhammed, Ramon, the care staff & the wonderful kitchendining crew – they are all just amazing, and I know its genuine because my mother is one tough customer, and she is constantly telling me how kind, thoughtful, and helpful everyone is. I am beyond grateful for their care, and I cannot express how good it feels to know that mom is in a place where she is valued and respected. Wed always hoped that mom could live out her years at home. Thankfully, weve found a home in Mariposa.

Mariposa is a lovely community. The property is designed perfectly for safety and comfort. Meals are nutritious and delicious. The staff is professional, personable, and compassionate. They are serious about keeping the residents healthy and they are COVID-free! The apartments are quiet, clean and comfortable. Everything is well maintained. For the past couple months weve been helping our father make the transition to Assisted Living and everyone on the Mariposa team has made this possible. THANK YOU!

Mariposa at Ellwood Shores, in our opinion, is by far one of the best assisted livingmemory care facilities in our community. The building inside and out has a clean, warm and welcoming ambiance. The leadership and staff go above and beyond to acknowledge, respect, care for and serve each of the residents who live there. It is an exceptional place to live. They offer fun, engaging activities and events. They have done a stellar job with keeping the residents and families up to date on a regular basis. Their priority has been to keep everyone informed and connected especially throughout this pandemic season. Our family is grateful to have entrusted our loved ones care into the hands of a beautifully gifted and qualified team of front line heroes.

My mother lives at Mariposa. We are pleased with the care she gets and the responsiveness of the staff. The fact that there are no residents or staff members who have contracted COVID-19 to date shows that the care of the residents is paramount and they take their jobs and responsibilities seriously.

Mariposa has done a wonderful job looking after my mother-in-law through this Covid-19 period of 2020. The executive director Peter and his staff have been diligent in requiring social distancing, masks, hand washing etc. of residents and staff to the point there have been no cases of Covid-19 amongst the residents. My MIL is in safe hands.

Our mother has been a resident at Mariposa for two years. Our entire family is grateful for the excellent care she receives. They have a dedicated and supportive staff, many group activities, wonderful food and a clean, well-maintained facility. The executive director, Peter Bonilla, is conscientious and personable. We appreciate the weekly Zoom meetings for family members, which keep us well-informed.

My wife and I have a relative in the memory care part of Mariposa, Compass Rose. We are very impressed with both the facility and the staff. Clean rooms, great food, and lots of activities. With everything going on with the whole COVID-19 situation, communications have been up-to-date and very clear. The Zoom meetings are a fantastic way to share the current status.

Wonderful new leadership in all areas. They listen and meet the needs of each person living there. The new activities director is exceptionally gifted and loving toward each resident. The LVN Director cares, listens, and follows thru. The place is beautiful, but the people who work their have such a heart for their residents. We are very blessed and pleased our mother is able to live there and we are always welcomed. Dawn

I visited Elwood Shores on a fact-finding mission. I found the staff friendly and courteous. The residents I encountered were having a good time listening to a fellow play music for them. The facility is clean and tidy and there is lots of open space for visiting.

Im writing this review with a more critical set of eyes than most. Im an owner of a small RCFE in Ojai, California and tend to give more conservative reviews of places. When giving tours of my facility I often find myself saying, Our facility is small and can therefore offer more personalized care. We are like a family here. I honestly and wholeheartedly thought this was impossible to achieve at larger facilities. I stand CORRECTED!! Mariposa at Ellwood Shores is not only beautiful the staff care about every SINGLE resident. During the Thomas Fire our facility had the unfortunate experience of having to evacuate. I decided to call facilities in Santa Barbara in hopes we could head North (instead of staying in a shelter). After a few discouraging phone calls I reached Sese at Mariposa. Without hesitation and with sincere concern for our residents (our family) he opened his doors to us. Most people dont understand how much paperwork this creates and how much work it is to get to know a new resident but again, without hesitation, Sese took it on. They took on our hospice residents, our dementia residents, residents that require lifts to transfer and did it with a loving and welcoming attitude. During their stay our residents enjoyed crafts, music and meal times together. Sese communicated openly the entire time and made their transition seamless. Frankly, I think our residents felt like they were at a resort and on vacation! Family members were thrilled to see photos (provided by the staff) of their loved ones to ease their hearts while they were in the midst of their own evacuations. There is not one negative thing I can say about Mariposa at Ellwood Shores. Its beautiful, clean, organized, their employees are competent, caring, kind, and provided individualized loving care. They provided a huge service to our facility, our residents and their concerned family members. Thank you to all of the caring employees at Mariposa at Ellwood Shores and especially to Sese for taking us under your wing and caring for the elderly community in Ojai! You have restored my faith in humanity. Thank you!
